Since its inception in 1972 at CHS, the Student Council has had as its aim to unify all general organizations under one control. This united student group has had the power to make recommendations for the betterment of the school and its members, to aid on the supervision of extra-cLu'ricular activities of the high school, and to investigate and report on matters referred to it by the faculty or administration. Over the past few years, the Student Council has conducted surveys, held elections, and supervised homecoming ceremonies and dances. Furthermore, it has sold sports ribbons, sweaters, and pens, has parked cars, and has run concession stands to provide funds for its general operation and for special school projects. The Canton High Student Council works to form a more harmonious feeling between the students and faculty, to provide an opportunity for training and citizenship in government, to cultivate a sense of respect for the fellow man and for his opinions, to in- crease school spirit, and to implant in each individual the ideas of involvement, team- work, pride, and accomplishment. Distributive Education is a vocational training program for high school students who have a desire and aptitude for training in the fields of marketing and distribution. Distribution is the business of moving, storing, and selling goods from the producer to the consumer. Marketing is the assembling of process and skills need- ed to move, store, merchandise, advertise and sell goods and services. ADVANTAGE: In the cooperative program, half of the student's school day is spent on the job in a qualified training station. The student learns the marketing process in a live laboratory, meeting situations, accepting challenges and improving his skills in stock- keeping, selling, receiving and marketing, displaying and related duties. The student is paid as a part-time employee and is super- vised by training sponsor. The need of self-esteem and self-confidence in oneself is the most universal need of the student today. By studying drama the student begins to realize the value of his or her individual traits and the in- valuable contribution which he or she can make to the class. Helen Hayes contributed the following statement about the world of drama: When I consider how many of the world's greatest minds - Sophocles, Shakespeare, Goethe, Moliere, Ibsen, Shaw, Aristotle - have clothed their ideas in dramatic form, when I consider how the theatre has cut through the barriers of national, religious and racial prejudice when I consider the enjoyment, the enrichment, and the enlightenment it has brought into the lives of countless of millions down through the ages - I become very proud of my profession. This is the time when Seniors are all one whole body. Secondly, graduation represents the ultimate plateau of long years of studious work and joyful play. Thirdly, and most importantly, is freedom - freedom to shed the ropes which have bound these students to carefree youth and take up the responsibility of maturity, to be categoriz- ed under the honorable and sought after title adult. I teach them knowledge, but I know How faint they flicker and how low The candles of my knowledge glow. I teach them power to will and do, But only now to learn anew My own great weakness thru and thru. The years of learning are never over and the ones past are well treasured. Each in our way is great nd yet small, but we will never forget these years of trial and error. 231 Acknowledgement The 1981-82 Yearbook Staff would like to extend our deepest appreciation to all who helped make this yearbook possible for the students of Canton Schools. We would like to thank Mr. Billy Nixon, High School Principal, for his consistently supportive attitude toward the events and proceedings of our staff. Without his cooperation many creative ideas might not have taken place. We would like to remember the Canton School Superintendent, Mr. A. D. Whitaker, who has helped with the guidance and standards of the yearbook. Finally, we would like to acknowledge the businesses of Canton, Texas, who have wholeheartedly been the single greatest contributors to the yearbook. The yearbook staff has sold more advertisements and sponsor pages than in recent years, and a large percent of the yearbook funding came from these generous businessmen and women. Without their support, we would not have the flexibility needed to add the ex- tras which enhance the yearbook and make it not just a picture album but a book which depicts the lives, actions, and feelings of the Canton School students. Herein, we cannot attempt to list all those individuals that contribute since that would take page after page to complete. So, in conclusion, to each individual, thank you. Your supportiveness and gift to us, either a word of advice, a monetary donation, or simply a pat on the back, can only be repaid through the work of art we produce. We sincerely hope this book in itself, will justly show how we have used your contribution. It is the small gift of you which has become an integral part of this book. We humbly thank you. Sincerely, Canton Yearbook Staff 1981-82 232 Cab? fi 57' QQ, VQXZQDQN, KW 'Www C5 Q -Q1 iw Q EQHQEM3 5292 2 gQCQj6X5Q1giQ4eCC Q, QQ? 3552 Wag 626, k6Z J A qw eb tow Q qw , 6 J fwsigxfgg 532: East 5 M059 Q wi J 5. kgs 5 i S Q Q9 W S 1 'F ' Q 5fg?o7 5QfN5fffQ?5M5ff,gM Wai? , ff NN PQ M5 LZ 9322 QQ QQ Iggy DCT' xx Q ggi? 5935 REQ 3?QQigj,wfXf Dggafgf JJ S99 ggi! 23?
