Q 1946 ,cjgofbaff BILL BAUGH, senior, guard. Bill was the spark plug of our line- he made up for what he lacked in height and weight in fighting spirit. Bill played equally well on offense and defense in the line. During the later part of the season Bill worked at quarterback. He proved he could handle this spot, too. Bill was awarded the Junior Chamber of Commerce trophy for being the man most useful to the team. We'll miss you, Bill. GGRDON KING, senior, substitute end. Gordie won his letter this year at left end. Although he is rather short, he more than makes up for it in speed and iight. He was a good blocker and tackler and since he graduates this year, he leaves an important spot to fill. PAUL LEEK, senior, guard. An excellent defensive man, Paul could always be counted on to smear all plays coming his way. He was noted for his low tackling and hard charging. This was Paul's record season on the varsity squad and we,ll miss him next year. DICK LEFEBVRF, senior, halfback. Dick was the fastest man on the team this year and also the team,s leading scorer. He swept the ends and hit the line with equally good results as well as taking care of most of the punting. This was Dick's third year on the first eleven and his all ,round ability will be missed next year. FRANK MELGREEN, senior, guard. Frankie is another Hghter. His hard charging and blocking was really great. Frank was one of the most aggressive men on the team and proved he could take out of play anyone who came his way. Another senior, his shoes will be hard to fill. RAY BALL, junior, tackle. Ray was the bruiser of the line. He was noted for his low tackling and bone crushing blocks. Buck put a real punch in the line and since he'll be back for '47 football, we expect big things from him. JOHN ELLSWORTH, junior, fullback. This was Johnnie's third year on the varsity at fullback. He was a powerhouse in line plunging and handled most of the kicking. He was a good blocker and a hard tackler. We'll be glad to have him back next year. Twin effermezz GENE GRUBAUGH, junior, end. Gene was mighty big, but fast for his size. I-Ie was an excellent pass receiver as well as a good down- field blocker. He's a scrapper who will always fight till the end. A junior, Gene will be back next year. BOB MACE, junior, quarterback. Bobby, captain of this year's team, called signals and did all of the passing. His clever play-calling won many games for C.H.S. Our triple-threat, Bob was small but mighty and since he's only a junior, he's sure to be an asset next year. BILL MUNSON, junior, right end. Bill snagged Mace's passes quite ably all year, and knocked down those of our opponents as well. He always played a hard, clean game and was an excellent blocker and a power on defense. Bill also accounted for many extra points by ac- curate place kicking. Here's to you next year, Bill. LEROY OAKS, junior, substitute back. Poke was the smallest man on the team this year, but he is fast and could always be counted on to block hard and squirm through any hole in the line. Oaks will be back next year and probably will see plenty of action. JACK PENSINGER, junior, halfback. jack is the workhorse of the team. He's a smooth ball-handler and a hard, fast runner. Jack was called on to do a little of the punting and passing, but was noted for cracking the line. This was ,Iack's second year on the varsity and since he's only a junior, he'll be back to star next year. VIRGIL TAYLOR, junior, tackle. Virg,' was one of the biggest men on the team this year. He was a crushing tackler and blocker. Coach Mathis shifted Taylor to the fullback spot in the last few games to add a punch to the pony backfieldf, He,s a junior so we'll hear from him next year. GARY THOMAS, junior, center. Gary was a defensive power. His powerful line blocking was really worth watching. Gary smeared any and all plays that managed to get through the line, and could always be counted on to pass the ball accurately. He'll be back in there fighting next year. arsify ghofbaff . . . The C.H.S. Gridders, hampered by injuries and inexperience, finished the football season with three wins and six defeats. The Canton eleven started off in the win column with victories over Havana and Peoria Manual. The Plowboys then were defeated by a strong Pekin team by a score of 19-7. Peoria Wfoodruff was our next foe and again we lost by 6 points. We snapped back to take a decisive 40-0 victory over Lewistown in our annual Homecoming contest. East Peoria was our next rival, and although the Little Giants played their best game of the year, the Red Raiders won by a narrow 3 point margin. The score was 15-12. The breaks were still against Canton when we took to the road to play Macomb. They won by a score of 19-0. Next we met and were defeated by a powerful Galesburg eleven. In the final game of COACH MATHIS the season Farmington scored freely to win 26-0. Although the season was far from being suc- cessful from the standpoint of wins, we gained a great deal of valuable experience and should have a winning team next year. Front Row: J. Ellsworth, B. The season's record was seven wins and one defeat. Manual was Canton's first victim. The final score was 26-6. The Farmington eleven fell 26-7 and Peoria Woodruff was defeated 8-0. Pekin stopped the Junior Little Giants' winning streak with a decisive 28-0 victory. The Canton eleven easily won over their next three oppon- ents. He was noted for his arching one-handed shots from the corner. Hess was always an alert ball player and was especially noted for his faking. His all 'round ability will be missed next year. CAPTAIN JACK PENSINGER, junior, guard. This year Jack was the team's leading scorer as well as an outstanding defensive player. Penny', played his second year on the first five, and proved himself to be a dependable floor general, and a steady, hard fighting player. Next year we'll welcome Jack back to the ranks of the first five. JOHN ELLSWORTH, junior, guard. Johnnie was the set shot artist of the team. His arching long one handers brought us to our feet time after time. He had plenty of endurance and could be counted on to play a full game. His constant scoring and smooth ball handling will be welcome next year. DICK MILLER, senior, center. Dick was the tallest boy on the squad this year, standing six feet three inches. He was an excellent rebound- er, controlling both bank boards. Dick's pivot shots were the chief reason that he was feared by all opponents. His place will be hard to fill. FRANK MELGREEN, senior, forward. Frankie', was the smallest man on the team, but he more than made up for it in spirit and fight. He was the spark plug of the team. Frank's best shot was a drive-in left hander. Defensively, he was the outstanding man of the team. His fighting spirit will be missed when the '47-'48 season rolls around. BILL MUNSON, junior, guard. Bill was sixth man this year. He was an exceptionally hard Hghting player. Offensively, he was always in there and his defensive play was steady. Since Bill is only a junior, we'll expect big things of him next year. BOB MEACHAM, junior, forward. Bob was just hitting his stride when a wrist injury received in the Pekin game kept him out of the line up for the remainder of the season. A tall sharp shooter, and good rebounder, he will be welcome back to play top-notch ball next year. effermen BOB MACE, junior, guard. Bobbie', saw quite a bit of action this year at both forward and guard posts. He had a good eye for the bas- ket and could always be counted on to fight when the coach said go. He'll be back with us next year. BOB IZARD, junior, forward. Tut was another sub', who played a lot of good ball this season. His dribbling and floor work were out- standing. His offensive play, especially on fast breaks, was valuable. Another junior, Tut will be back in '48, HOWARD DEGROOT, senior, center. Howard was one of the tallest of the Plowboys. He always gave his best when called upon. Rebound, especially defensively, was his specialty. His shots under the basket were accurate. We'll be sorry to see you go, Howard. LEROY OAKS, junior, guard. Poke was another inexperienced fellow who played varsity ball. He was a good defensive man, and with a year of varsity experience, he should be ready to earn a regular post next year. CHARLES CARDOSI, sophomore, center. Chuck,' was the young- est member of the squad this year, but most certainly not the smallest. He developed into one of the best players of the team. His pivot shots were accurate and made him a constant scoring threat. We expect big things of him in the next two years. DICK JONES, junior, center. Jones was another capable reserve on this year's squad. His height and eyes for the basket were valuable assets. Although Dick did not finish the season, his work in scrimmage was appreciated. RODNEY DEARING, junior, forward. Rod didn't see much ac- tion this year, but he will return next season to fight for a position. He didn,t get to finish the season, but his speed and deception should recommend him next year. 1lw 'UaydH ' Chiu ICQL7 'SC' .. .1 ...W 'f J Ja fwfr QZQL.,f.kNf arsify askefbaff . . . The basketball season this year was not as successful as has been characteristic of some seasons, but as the season advanced, the team showed great improvement, in fact, in the Kewanee and Champaign games the boys were really inspired. Because of the late start in forming the team, only one match could be scheduled. Canton was soundly de- feated by Pekin's net men in this match. Also, competing as a team, they took second place at the quadrangular and district meets in Peoria. Most important of all, our team won the Illini Conference Championship. Dick Lefebvre, Phil Santos, Dick Toncray and the relay team, composed of Watson, Lefebvre, Cox and Watt, competed in the State Track Meet in Champaign. All boys who were interested were divided into two groups: freshman-sophomore and junior-senior. Each group was then divided into six leagues and a captain was elected to head each league. The boys had many different sports from which to choose. Fall sports were: football, softball, cross-country, speed ball and volleyball. In the winter, basketball, boxing, bowling, and wrestling were offered. Spring sports were: softball, tennis, track and field, swimming and horseshoes. Basketball proved to be the most popular sport. Michigan captained by Jim Gardner won first place. This team played the Intramural All-Stars in a curtain-raiser to the Sectional Tournament championship game. BUS TOURNAMENT Coach Mathis organized a bus tournament to enable bus students to participate in basketball. The plan proved to be very successful and popular. The championship game was played as a preliminary to the Canton-Champaign contest. Western defeated Bryant-St. David by the score of 29-22. And with that statement as a general summary of C.H.S. students' feelings, we introduce to you the Pennant.,' This year a brand new Pennant was introduced. The bimonthly edition was enlarged to four pages and was printed by Mr. Lyle Babcock. The new editions carried many of the old stand-bys-jokes, fashion news, and, of course, the snooper scoop column but it also carried interviews with outstanding pupils at C.H.S. Under the leadership of Mrs. Lillian I-Iagbom, the Pennant,s edi- tors, Caroline Dunk and Lula Brown, and the associate editors, Lillian Ramsey, Wanda Barnett and Phyllis Mendenhall, joined the capable staff in bringing to you this first year's edition of the new, revised Pennant. At six-thirty o'clock a huge and hilarious parade was under way, headed by the Queen and her attendants in a red convertible. In the parade were many decorated cars, Richard Danner,s carrying off first prize and Phyllis Flowers' winning second. At the field the traditional snake dance was led by Jeanine Harter. After a stirring 41-0 victory over Lewistown, students and alums proceeded to the gym where Jack Callahan's orchestra played for the Homecoming dance. Here Vera Manwarren, elected Queen by the seniors, was crowned by Harold Pschirrer, senior class president. Her attendants were ,Ioan Metcalfe, -Ioan Henderson, and Joan Myers, all chosen by the students. Little Suzanne Sandberg, flower girl, and Dick Wright, crown bearer, helped make the Coronation party complete. Credit for this most successful Homecoming goes to the Senior class and the com- mittee in charge: Ted Hays and Phyllis Thieme, co-chairmen, Jack Drew, Wilbur Jarvis, Barbara Vittum, Larry Armstrong, Pete Lakin, Gloria Saurbaugh, Catherine Gerhart, ,lean Lefebvre, and David Greer. Faculty advisors were Mrs. Jenkins and Mr. Ziegler. And thus one of the most outstanding Homecomings ever held at C.H.S. came to an end. Ah, the Prom! What a glorious sounding word, and what a glorious Prom it was too! For some, it was their first formal dance and the thrill was incomparable. Even though the night of May third was none too pleasant, the gay decorations of red, white, and black arranged in a Mardi Gras theme made us forget the weather, but definitely! Mel Brooking's solid band beat it out for us while we danced the night away, and the girls in their filmy and charming formals, with their smooth looking dates, made it the outstanding event of the year. Those to whom we are most indebted for such a super-solid occasion are: Miss Marjory Anders, Mrs. Verla Clark, Mr. Glen Medus, ably assisted by Yvonne Larson as chairman of the invitation committee, Phoebe Myers as chairman of the orchestra committee, Phyllis Thieme, chairman of the property committee, and Nancy Nelson as chairman of the decoration committee. If you haven't already guessed it, let me tell you, it was swell! November 15, 1946, Was a big night for the upperclassmen, because the annual Junior-Senior Hop started when Finis Turner and his solid orchestra struck up the band in the Elk's Ballroom. The scene was gay With bright colored dresses and smooth looking fellows sporting bouton- nieres. The Senior Class under the leadership of Harold Pschirrer, Tom Duddy, Pat Gerhart, Martha Soldwedel and their advisors, Mrs. Jenkins and Mr. Zeigler, made this a very successful and memorable occasion. As each of us tipped our glass to partake of that oo la la punch, we all silently thought, I-Iere's to you, Class of '47. . . aigafop H , 77 ,UVUZQ ZVEI' . . With such a splendid cast, you can take for granted it was superb. The cast Worked hard, and were rewarded with a capacity audience. This proves that when there is good entertainment in C.H.S. we all turn out. We Want more, Mr. Walker. Three very entertaining one act plays were presented by the Junior Class. Last Flight Overf' the story of a Nebraska pioneer boy who wanted to build bridges, was selected by the audience to compete in the district contest at Macomb. A second play, Lily, portrayed the meeting of a mother and daugh- ter at a prison farm. My Late Espoused Saint, a comedy drama about a hot tempered college professor who returned to life in his wife's memory, was the third play. All three plays were under the capable direction of Miss Daisy Coty. THE CASTS LAST FLIGHT OVER' Dave, a boy, seventeen. ,.,,ss,,s,,..,,, ,ss,,,sss, ,s,.,,.,,..s.,. .
