In 1836 aspiration ran high in School mattcrs and what was known as Canton Collcgc was founded. This building was located on thc grounds which arc now occupicd by thc lntcrnational Harvcstcr Company, and it scrvcd the purposc until 1813 whcn it was razcd by ai tornado. ln Junc, 1860, the corncrstonc for thc tirst High School building was laid and it was rcplaccd by the prcscnt structurc. rcady for occupancy on April 1. 1530-l-. This building was adm-quatc in sizc, at that timc. to accommodatc thc Al-00 studcnts. and it was equipped with a iinc laboratory. library, gym, and twcnty rccitation rooms. Howcvor, many improvcmf-nts and additions have bccn madc sincc that time in order to takc care of the largcr numbcr of studcnts. Thc south wing was built in 1929, and only last ycar many improvcmcnts wcrc madc, including an cntirc ncw lighting systcm, rcdccoration, and additional stairways. So now, as always. Canton ranks high among thc secondary schools of Illinois.
