CHALLENGE or TOMORROW I think that every person at sometime asks himself, Have I succeeded? Have I made a place for myself in this world?N As we go from place to place to place we see many kinds of people, people who are working to get ahead and people who are loafing. Many children in school say, Hwhat chance have I? I cannot afford an educatlon.U They give up before they start. If they will only accept this as a challenge they will see that to work is to accom- plish, to accomplish will lift your spirit and with the spirit to work no goal is too high for you. Abraham Lincoln, a man who will never be forgotten was born in a log cabin. He studied by candle-light, yet, with a will to work he became an unforgettable memory to his whole country. He was a self-educated man who never stopped learning. The habit of being at an appointment at the appointed time and the willing- ness to stay with a job until it is completed satisfactorily. Sure, it may take some luck, but we will all have this luck if we earn its Here in America there is a challenge everyday of our lives: the challenge to tell the truth when the truth needs to be toldg the challenge of good sportsmanship against poor sportsmanship: the challenge of standing by a friend in needy the challenge of upholding the right in the face of profitable corruption. The one who faces these is the one who will make the best citizen. Citizen- ship ls regarded by everyone as a priceless asset to himself as well as his community. There is no one, but who could go to church more regularly, attend more community affairs and patronize the voting poll more earnestly. Thousands of our fathers, sons and brothers died to give us the opportunity to go to the church we choose, to give us the privilege of voting as we see fit, and yet we let these ugo down the drain' because it is too much bother to us. I wonder if the average person realizes the many wonderful privileges that we have and appreciates them. The right to work so that we may own our own home is a privilege that is not enjoyed by the people in some countries in this world. I think it is a great privilege to be able to have this home wherever we want lt. The one who chooses a farm may live on a farm and the one who pre- fers life in a city may live an urban life. We can choose our own course of study in school, then choose our own orofession and the nlace of higher education that will give us the necessary training. Many scholarshius are offered today for those of us who measure up to them. Do you know that in some countries only a few are allowed to even consider nrofesslonal training? If we stop to consider the priceless gifts we have, we will want to try harder to keep this way of life alive and to further these priv- ileges for the young neoole in America. There is only one way to Dreserve these privileges. The pub- lic alone, through the gradual education of the individual as a citizen, can bring about many improvements in each community so that they will vent a better way of life for each generation. This can be brought about but slowly if we educate only a few. Even if your sons and daughters are not going to oursue a pro- fessional education, they will be better citizens and better home- makers if they receive a good education. From the intelligent voting of the people in the small towns comes the political power that elects the office-holders of the state and of the nation. These are the lawmakers who are going to bring about the reforms necessary to improve education, government and society. All of these resnonsibillties will soon rest uoon the shouldera of the young people of today. Let us rally to the call of duty with youthful vigor and enthusiasm. In leaving I just want to wish all the under-graduates the best of luck in the future. Get all the education and all the pleasure possible from every minute of your school days. There will never be another such opportunity for you.
