Have I made a place for myself in this world?N As we go from place to place to place we see many kinds of people, people who are working to get ahead and people who are loafing. Many children in school say, Hwhat chance have I? I cannot afford an educatlon.U They give up before they start. If they will only accept this as a challenge they will see that to work is to accom- plish, to accomplish will lift your spirit and with the spirit to work no goal is too high for you. Abraham Lincoln, a man who will never be forgotten was born in a log cabin. He studied by candle-light, yet, with a will to work he became an unforgettable memory to his whole country. He was a self-educated man who never stopped learning. Today a college education is to the girls and boys of America. high. o meet these standards we of Science, our English Language, technical knowledge of our chosen ledge be of mining, teaching, nursing, farming, flying other of the hundreds of professions from which we can must secure that knowledge to make a life of our own. knowledge we acquire the higher our standard of living becoming more and more important The standard of living is very must have knowledge--knowledge Biology, Arithmetic and then a profession. Whether this know- or of any choose, we The more will be. In Southern states negroes are fighting for the opportunity to acquire an education. We who have this opportunity, surely we are not going to turn it down. All over the world the people who are admired are the people with an education, and the will to work. They are the ones we read about and say HSome people sure are luckyln Maybe it wasn't all luck. Maybe it was work. The habit of being at an appointment at the appointed time and the willing- ness to stay with a job until it is completed satisfactorily. Sure, it may take some luck, but we will all have this luck if we earn its Here in America there is a challenge everyday of our lives: the challenge to tell the truth when the truth needs to be toldg the challenge of good sportsmanship against poor sportsmanship: the challenge of standing by a friend in needy the challenge of upholding the right in the face of profitable corruption. The one who faces these is the one who will make the best citizen. Citizen- ship ls regarded by everyone as a priceless asset to himself as well as his community. There is no one, but who could go to church more regularly, attend more community affairs and patronize the voting poll more earnestly. Thousands of our fathers, sons and brothers died to give us the opportunity to go to the church we choose, to give us the privilege of voting as we see fit, and yet we let these ugo down the drain' because it is too much bother to us. ' I .1 I wonder if the average person realizes the many wonderful privileges that we have and appreciates them. The right to work so that we may own our own home is a privilege that is not enjoyed by the people in some countries in this world. I think it is a great privilege to be able to have this home wherever we want lt. The one who chooses a farm may live on a farm and the one who pre- fers life in a city may live an urban life. We can choose our own course of study in school, then choose our own orofession and the nlace of higher education that will give us the necessary training. Many scholarshius are offered today for those of us who measure up to them. Do you know that in some countries only a few are allowed to even consider nrofesslonal training? If we stop to consider the priceless gifts we have, we will want to try harder to keep this way of life alive and to further these priv- ileges for the young neoole in America. There is only one way to Dreserve these privileges. The pub- lic alone, through the gradual education of the individual as a citizen, can bring about many improvements in each community so that they will vent a better way of life for each generation. This can be brought about but slowly if we educate only a few. Even if your sons and daughters are not going to oursue a pro- fessional education, they will be better citizens and better home- makers if they receive a good education. From the intelligent voting of the people in the small towns comes the political power that elects the office-holders of the state and of the nation. These are the lawmakers who are going to bring about the reforms necessary to improve education, government and society. All of these resnonsibillties will soon rest uoon the shouldera of the young people of today. Let us rally to the call of duty with youthful vigor and enthusiasm. In leaving I just want to wish all the under-graduates the best of luck in the future. Get all the education and all the pleasure possible from every minute of your school days. There will never be another such opportunity for you. To the teacher I want to say thank you for all you have done for me and I want to wish you good luck. 4 ',.. e . r- '. -if X -' X Editor-in-chief J h,:glfg Shirley Kimball 1 N 42' Q. HQ If MY CLASS TRIP At ten o'clock the evening of the fifteenth of April, Mr. and Mrs. Gibson, Saundra Tucker and I left for New York. It was rain- ing, and right away the first incident of our trip occurred when the Mercury broke down between Hartford and Canton. Westopped a few times on the way for refreshing snacks, and managed to get off the Merritt Parkway before our last drop of gas was gone. We pro- ceeded in the fog at about 25 m.p.h. and arrived in Stamford, Conn. about ten o'clock. We left the car there and boarded a train for Grand Central Station. A lunch and a rest at the Hotel Piccadilly refreshed us so that we were ready and raring to dc the big city! Our first sight was the Empire State Building. From the very top of the tallest building in the world we saw the city by day and then watched the millions of lights come on all over New York City. We stopped in the observation tower and wrote post cards. Did you get them? After this we had supper in the famous Toffenemdx in Times Square. Radio City Music Hall was first on the list for entertainment. It was the famous Easter Pageant which has played during this season for many year. There were numerous stage acts which were all wonderful. There was also.a movie, WSerenadeW. We were on our way to the hotel when we decided that it was too early to go to bed our first night in New York City so we went to another movie. We saw VThe Benny Goodman Storyn and NThe Nat King Storyn. On the second day we got up early to go to the Dave Garroway show. After we found our way there, we were told that it was going to originate-from Cincinatti that morning. This day was Tuesday and we filled it out with a tour of the United Nations Building, the TV show, VFeather Your Nestu and a trip to the Statue of ' - Liberty. If you plan to go up the twelve flights plus 123 steps, don't bet the others you can beat the elevator up. You probably can, but you'll never be the same again! That night we went to Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus which is the largest circus in the world. The next day we went on a tour of Rockerfeller Center. On this tour we saw where TV shows such as VHit Paraden and the WBig Storyn originate, During the afternoon we went to the Palace Theatre and saw eight acts of vaudeville and the movie, VNever Say Goodbyen. At night we had tickets to the TV show,'Masquerade Party' but the seats were all full when we got there. However, we did see Peter Lind Hayes, Mary Healy and all of the important people on the show. The rest of the evening we went to a place where we had our pictures taken together. There we met the kids from Litchfield Academy, then another movie and then something more to eat!! Thursday we waved on the Dave Garroway show--did you see us?-- and then journeyed to the Bronx Zoo where we saw many interesting animals. ,After this we went to the Hayden Planetarium where we saw the planets and starts located as they appear in the sky at different seasons. Thursday night we bought tickets to the stage play, VJanusV with Claudette Colbert and Robert Preston playing the leads, which was very good. The theatre for this play was right across the street from our hotel, 92 ,1 Z3 12 Q L,m.1 Lm.a,SLAam - Friday morning was spent shopping in the famcusftores on Fifth Avenue and Times Square. About Hires o'clock we very sadly checked out of the hotel and took a taxi for Grand Central Station. After our tickets were bought, we decided it was a little too early to go home so we took a subway back to Times Square to see eight acts of vaudeville. Just couldn't tear ourselves away! We didn't have to travel across the Atlantic or Pacific or leave our family or friends to come to the New World and earn this right to be Americans. We're all pretty smug about it--we're Americans! What is it that makes America different from any other place on the earth? Are other people just as smug because they are Italian, or German, or French, or Russian? Why do we think America is wonderful? Do others think that Italy, or Germany, or France, or Russia is as wonderful? Isn't the grass green in Germany? Aren't the people friendly? Doesn't spring come to these far away places? Don't the birds sing their songs, don't children shout and play, and doesn't the moon look down on other small towns and villages and other big cities? Before the war, weren't there other people who were happy? In some far-off corner of the world aren't there some people who are happy--happy to be alive--happy to be sharing in the joy of.. living? Then why is America so different? Democracy? What is that? Webster defines it as a Goverment in which the supreme power is in the hands of the people. Is it so in these United States? Do we control our goverment? We vote for representatives and senators. How much graft and corrupt politics are involved? Can everyone afford to pay poll taxes? Well, we have freedom of speech--freedom from want--but do we? Aren't there sometines invisible swords hanging over our heads that prevent us from saying what we want to say? Does everybody have enough to eat and enough to wear all the time? How many people die of starvation here? Us we always have freedom of press and free- dom of assembly? Or are we sometimes dominated by the money-man who says Wlou do this or else--?W We do have compulsory education and opportunities on every hand to improve our knowledge and our station in life. But Democracy? 1 sometimes wonder! This is america. This is the land of opportunity. Does everyone who comes here have equal opportunity? oesn't Mr. Moneybags always get the most? What about racial discrimination? Do we sometimes judge a man by the color of his skin--the way his eyes slant, or the pronounciation of his last name? The answers to all these questions may not always favor America It may be for some of them the answers will indicate that we do not have perfect democracy. But despite this, where is the country that can answer Wyesn to so many of these questions. Yes, I'd rather live in America than in any other land. This is the land of my birth--the land I'm proud of--the land I'l1 defend. I finally graduated from ant school. Now I'm ready to find my house and settle down. My name is Joe, and, as you have probably guessed, I'm an ant, that is, a house ant. Oh boy! That looks like a wonderful house. Now to find a likely looking crack so that I can get inside. Let's see now. I think I'11 explore a little until I get used to the place. Hmm, I wonder what's inside that long tube. I-P-A-N-A. Some of the language people use is disgraceful. I wonder what it tastes like. Well, here I go. Gad! what ghastly tast ing stuff. After that I'd rather take smaller bites. That looks interesting. Perhaps it will taste better than the last mouth full. Oh! Oh! bubles are coming out of my mouth. what did I get into now? I'm getting out of here while Ifm still alive. In the next room I saw a long table lined with bottles and glasses. To satisfy my curiosity, I climbed up to investi- gate. Before me was a puddle of what looked to me like water. After all the horrible tasting things I had just tasted, water sounded good to me. Even though, the water tasted different and tickled my nose, I drank most of it. After that I got the hiccups and could hardly stand on all my legs. I staggered to the kitchen, I had been taught in ant school that this was the best part of the house. The first thing I saw was a beautiful white cake with mounds of thick white frosting. As I stepped on the top, I sank all the way up to my antennal in frosting. Getting out of there wasn't any easy job. After that I saw some white grains on the floor in the corner. Although I didn't know much about poison, they couldn' fool me as easily as that. I knew it was arsenic. Then I saw something that looked like a bottle cap. I had tried every- thing else. I might just as well mess around in that. Once I stepped into it I knew I had gotten into a trap. The poison in the cap was cutting my life short, all I have to say about the whole adventure is ----- nThese..darn,.new..inventionsn June Taber 053 .Ioodna at 951133 W E3 ,al 3 O Jog R a'J9J nmblant 393 93 bane 393 I Liana gillvlvqlr I 853 3 93853 .nsnouf guinea 1 '3'!sMf Jed diiw ban!! 91663 uno! 5 eil! am Q3 baicoi isdn io JAdHdA tna-mowi add ,Jus an m'I., 3 wo! .saved Jun gnkassg oz qu bvdmtla I ,ystao sau! had I'e3n1d3 DHJHOJ YGJQU ad! It was the climax of three days of prep- aration. and proved to be a very worth while and ed- ucational project. To start the project, the faculty selected a group of students on Monday to serve in the roles of the 1955 officers. This group met to draw up a warrant which was acted upon by a Budget Committee on Tuesday. The warrant included thirty-one articles and was posted by the selected constable Tuesday afternoon. The warrant was prepared by the Commercial Department and copies were made for the use of the entire school body at the meeting on Wednesday. The town meeting commenced at 10:00 A. M, on Wed- nesday and lasted three hours. Robert Tirrell was chosen Moderator and did a very fine job of carrying out the procedure throughout the lengthy session. Other officers elected at the meeting were: Shirley Kimball, Town Clerkg Malcolm Haynes Rita York, and Saun- dra Tucker, Selectmeng Jean Small, School Committee and Road Commissionerg Arnold Dailey, Treasurerg and Barbara Davenport, Tax Collector. As expected the more lengthy discussions arose from the articles in the warrant pertaining to schools. A large percentage of the student buhrparticipated in the program. First Selectmen Leo York and Town Clerk Stanley Plummer of the Town of Canton were invited guests. These two gentlemen were very helpful to the students throughout the meeting. - 'f1'ff?9?5e-- ff nc? ,A 3, at ' miie' ... ,f'wF 5f5Hl,q'P ff' ,T piyfh'1 r 2 yr xl., A f ! kits.. The students seemed to be quite fas- cinated, particularly with the new bleaching plant which is - operated entirely by one man and an elaborate array of buttons, dials, red lights, and recording devices. Richard Tucker seemed to hold much interest in the air conditioning units in the floors of some parts of the plant and thereby proceeded ' to demonstrate the efficiency of these units to Rita York, who, incidentally, showednnot quite so much interest as did Tucker. To sum up the entire trip, it can be said that the students were fully occupied with either laughs, odors, employees, or knowledge. It is generally felt that the trip was worthwhile. Ralph Conant '59 GIVICS FIELD TRIP On February 15, the Civics Class left the school house on their way to Pownal State School. We left at noon in three cars driven by Mrs. Wallace, June Taber, and Clifford Conant, About half way there Richard Tucker and Beverly Kilbreth met us in their car. Upon reaching out destination, Mr. Pappanikou met us and explained the educational system of the school. His assistant, Mr. Fred Ayer, Jr., took us through the various class-rooms and shops where we saw the students studying and working. Mr. Ayer showed us his shop which was the-Introduction to Manual Arts and his father's print shop where they publish a regular paper. We saw sewing classes where the older girls and women were making clothing. We were told that they make nearly all of the clothing needed in the school plus the mattress coverings and the uni orms worn by the doctors and nurses in the hospital. We spent about two and one half hours touring the school and then we assembled in the auditorium for a question and answer session conducted by Mr. Ayer. Very few questions were asked, but Mrs. Wallace had some to answer the next day, On our way home, we stopped at Jimmy's Diner in Auburn for supper. We arrived home about six o'clock having had a wonderful time.
