Doherty A Message To You The class of nineteen hundred and fifty-one embarked upon its UPU YOU' of Public school education in the fall of nineteen hun- dred and thirty-nine. Shortly thereafter, our country began to mo- bilize for World war II. Your entire school experience has taken place in an atmosphere of possible or actual world conflict. It is your lot now to grad- uate from this school at a time when the present clash between the freedom of Democracy and the slavery of Communism threatens to des- troy our western culture and our American way of life. Your total school experiences have been designed to develop in you an appreciation of the tremendous gift of citizenship in a democracy which is your heritage. History has shown you that down through the ages certain generations have had to meet great crises. Yours is one of those generations. I The present crisis will test the will and the courage of each one of you to make the greatest contribution you can to defend those things which we cherish. Those of us who have worked with you and have seen you grow and develop are confident that in your generation lies the ultimate security of our democracy.
