As the year rolled along, quite uneventfully toward May, we chose as our share of the beauty for the May Queen Festival, Llzbeth Putnam and the late Evelyn Tharau Our first main event was our class picnic which was held at Lake Compounce during the first part of June Following the class picnic and the last day our Freshman Life, we all looked forward to a summer of re axation, thinking proud ly of the day when we could call ourselves Sophomores SOPHOMORE YEAR September, 1947, found our class slightly smaller in size but greater in enthusiasm with the anticipation of the coming events of our Sophomore year We called our first class meeting to order with the assistance of our adv sors, Mr Lloyd Wheeler and Mr Joseph Hilbert to elect class officers we chose as President, Paul Alasso, Vice President, Jul o Aramini, Secretary, Margaret Johnson, and Treasurer Barbara Gilchrist Our activities began with the selecting of the class ring A committee con sisting of Ann Downey, Susan Augur, and Frank Kucia was appointed to make arrange ments for obtaining our rings Much time was devoted to the preparation of our Sophomore Hop The various committees worked hard and had the realization that our dance had been a success in every sense of the word. At the Traditional May Dance, the Queen was attended by Rosalie Dlubac and Doris Mazza who represented the Sophomore Class. In June we decided that the site for our class picnic would again be Lake Compounce. With the knowledge that our days as Sophomores had passed, we looked forward to the not too distant future when we would become upperclassmen. 29 0 E , Jo : . . . initiation, preceding the annual reception given by the Seniors. JUNIOR YEAR After the summer that passed all too quickly, we returned with sixty class members, all eager to enjoy the rank of proud upperclassmen We chose as our class officers David Gilchrist, President, Robert Quick Vice President, Sylvia Anderson Secretary, and Betty Rowell, Treasurer Mr Helen Marsh and Mr Emanuel Dav dson acted as our faculty advisors Our first really big social event was the Variety Show which was held in the Spring of 1949. This show revealed much of the hidden talent obtainable from students of Canton High The general committee was chosen and Sylvia Anderson was elected chairman She was assisted by Betty Rowell, Herbert Solomon, Mary Ann Martin, and George Kozlak The decorations for our Junior Prom, pastel colors, were very effective, and dancing to the music of Mitchell Lucas very enjoyable Shirley Hoerrner was cho sen as chairman of the Prom committee and was assisted by several of the class members Patricia Flaton and Shirley Hoerrner were our newly elected attendants for the May Queen Festival After our long awaited Field Day, in which the whole school participated, turned our backs once again on Canton High, looking forward, proudly, to the honor of becoming Seniors SENIOR YEAR At last the class of 1950 had reached their goal, we had become the Senior Class of Canton High A busy year was begun by a class meeting which took place early in September The meeting was concerned mainly with electing our class officers and the results were President, Robert Berger, Vice President Shirley Hoerrner, Secretary, Mariel Tomlinson, and Treasurer, Betty Rowell Our a visors were Miss Joan Shea and Mr Our first social event of the year was the annual Freshmen Night which was presented on the evening of October 7 The following students were elected to a General Committee, Edward Jadovich, Chairman, Mary Ann Martin Lester Clark, Frank Kucia, Margaret Johnson, and Robert Quick Under their irection we were successful both socially and financially with the year moving at a rapid pace we decided to get the yearbook underway We chose as Editor, Sylvia Anderson, Co editor, Shirley Hoerrner, and Business Manager, Paul Kneuer The editor and her assistants staff Early in December, the Echo staff presented the Carnival to the class, the proceeds of whichwouldbe yearbook This idea met withenthusiasmand the date A committee of six was elected to work with the Echo plans. The members of the committee were Mary Ann then met and appointed their idea of having a Senior used towards paying for our was set for January 13, 1950 Staff in carrying out our Martin, Bette winters, Margaret Johnson, Robert Quick, Caroline Sherwood, and Herbert Solomon The class elected three candidates, Shirley Hoerrner, Mariel Tomlinson, and Betty Rowell to represent Canton High for the D A R award The honor was be stowed upon Shirley Hoerrner. With winter almost over and spring in the very near future it was time to start planning for a formal dance. An inovation was added to our social schedule, According to tradition there have always been two formal dances throughout the year a Junior Prom and a Senior Ball But 1950 was marked by the Junior and Senior Classes combining their efforts and coming forth with one big dance the Spring Prom. With the close of school drawing near the Class of 1950 realized that four of the happiest years of our lives would end when we received our diplomas. O :D . , ' . i . we :. . O6 . O Delio Rotondo. During the annual magazine drive, an award was offered to the class that won the drive on a per capita basis. The Juniors demonstrated their ability as salesmen by winning this contest, thus adding 8188.99 to their treasury. Early in the year the class decided to collect dues, and a yearly amount of 82.00 per member was set. This amount will go toward expenses in the senior year. As an evtra curricular activity, the Juniors organized a band of talented pupils from the entire school, and presented a Variety Show on April 14. This year marked a change in an old Canton High School custom. Previously two formals had been held each year a Junior Promenade and a Senior Ball. In February after much discussion, the Junior and Senior Classes voted to combine the affairs, and held the Spring Prom on May 26. The Class of 1951 has shown that they have the making of a successful Senior Class in the fall. 3h gy, J, l u A I mm 4 gtfl N UN Class Cf 1952 Officers Advisors President Gilbert Fairclough Mr Hilbert Vice President Bruce Richardson Mrs Anderson Secretary Martha Eddy Mrs Marsh Treasurer Geraldine Kruse The Sophomores continued the good Judgement and sincere enthusiasm that took them through a prosperous freshman year, by electing their class officers early in the fall. Realizing that the class treasury will undergo a severe strain in the next two years, the Sophomores established a system whereby each member of the class pays 82.00 per year in dues. The big event of the fall social season was the annual Sophomore Hop, held on November 18. The gymnasium was gayly decorated with stars adorning the walls. The dance, which proved to be a success, clearly demonstrated that the class of 1952 has mastered two fundamental steps toward becoming upperclassmen--the abil- ity to organize, and the willingness to co operate. 35 I I 'I 2 T f 5 i detuu T n W s sa,s I ll CANUNII l Class Of 1953 Officers Advisors President Paul Rotondo Miss Fehl Vice President Patricia Cole Miss Turkington Secretary Marilyn Bahre Miss Ponte Treasurer John Blanchard Mr Dubuc The Freshman Class entered Canton High School as an enthusiastic group of new- comers ready to conquer the world. But the Seniors had other ideas, and the Class of 1955 was slowly subdued to a position suitable to its rank. The climax of this period of submission came on when the Seniors introduced the Freshmen to the school at the Freshman Reception. At that time the Freshmen displayed their numerous tal- ents, and were accepted as members of C.H.S. To prove that foresight is not lacking at C.H.S., even in the youngsters of the school, the class pronounced an annual fee of 82.00 per member as dues. If this habit remains with the class for the next few years, the Class of 1953 should have a substantial treasury to rely upon. Although the Freshmen had their hands full becoming adjusted to a new life, they managed to present a movie and Sports Hop on March 3. This event was proof in itself that there are great things to come from this class. 36 , at ' a ff N ! wb 2 ARCHERY CLUB M2 1- ff 234 , 1, CAMERA CLUB 37 COOKING CLUB DRAMATIC CLUB 38 CANTUN GLEE CLUB HANDICRAFT CLUB 39 19 'HQ K HOUSE PLANS CLUB INTRAMURALS CBOYS3 ho INTRAMURALS CGIRLSJ KNITTING CLUB lrl 5 LIBRARY C LUB LITERARY CLUB 42 ALL,,. , 7-907-'iii 'f?'l4f'Z: MUSIC APPRECIATION ORCHESTRA CLUB 43 .f. 4 PERSONAL TYPING CLUB PROJECTOR OPVRATORS CLUB '+R 4 2 . fy SJW 1 424 3 v X . g ..
