Early in the season, views were pessimistic about our chances this year. Suddenly, Canton walked away with the first two games, outwitting Bethel 21-7 and Enka 14-O. Spirits soared. But now the Bears were face to face with Brevard. A jammed andpacked stadium of expectant spectators remembers this hard fought game as the most exciting one of the season. Fans won't soon forget the field goal gamble and the last half touchdown which eked out Canton's 9-7 victory. The Bears g alloped on to beat Waynesville Z1-6. In the next two w e ek s the Bears defeated Asheville School and Blue Ridge by the same s co r e s of 27-O. Canton's winning streak was dampened when Hendersonville held us to a 13-13 tie game. The next w e e k in non- conference play Waynesville embarassed Canton witha score of 7-O, and two weeks later Lee Edwards subdued the Bears 13-O. On November ll, the coaches of the Blue Ridge Conference met to pick the representative in the District Eight playoffs. Canton was it! B efo r e hundreds of cheering fans, the Bears trampled Murphy 34-14. Midst cheers and shouts and rahs and much fanfare, the hopeful Bears took off all braced to me e t Mye r s Pa r k. But alas! When the final whistle sounded, Canton's gallant Bears, out-weighed and rain-soaked, were out-classed 14-6. Thus ended this fo otball season-with a record of eight victories, one tie, three defeats, and the distinction of being Blue Ridge Conference Champions. Ernest Stepp f A E. , . Best, C. m Cantonl-Iigh's Black Bears had a stran e b k g as etball season. They opened the season by de- feating .Biltmore 48-42 and lost the second game to Enka. An exciting tie game with two over- time periods, Enka triumphed 48-42. In Canton's s e c ond game with Enka, the Black Bears in the last seconds rallied to win by a score of 46-43. Canton was defeated twice in re 1 gu ar season by Hendersonville and Waynesville. The Bears defeated Clyde and Biltmore twice. One of the most 1 h . p easant upsets came when the Bears, after aving been beaten by a fantastic score in their first encounter, defeated Reynolds 54-45. This was the first year that the Black Bears coped with Western Carolina College's freshmen. The Bears led until the last few minutes when they succumbed. In the first round of District Eight play, C anton was defeated by Swain 53-52. They were trailing 27 points at the end of the third periodbut rocketed to lose by only one point. In Blue Ridge Conference play, Canton defeated Brevard 56-51. This was a ridiculous upset, for two brave lads, Wilson and Roberts, who had not played all season, trailed out the game. The score keeper also reported in and contributed to the win. The next night the Bear quints ended their season when they bowed to Hendersonville 50-79. From the standpoint of experience, the Black Bear lassies had a profitable season. Their wins actually outshone any team of recent years. No one on the starting team was a senior, thus, this year was a training period for things yet to come. The J'.V,'s had an enviable record for the season. They received only two defeats, both from Hendersonville. The J.V,'s entered the Blue Ridge Conference and met the Bear-kittens in their first game. They won 44-40. They went on to defeat Bethel 51-46 to win the Blue Rid e Conference championship. S Five Canton players made All Blue Ridge Conference: Richard Williamson, Shirley Young, Sandra Robertson, Rudy Reeves, and Ross Kilpatrick. Ernest Stepp iff 7 ff sm!
