Class History When, on a pleasant morning in Septem¬ ber 1946, the class of 1951 descended upon the doorstep of Canton High, both building and teachers reeled from the impact. They’ve been reeling ever since. ISO talkative, wigglesome pieces of raw material presented themselves as candidates for the long grinding process of be¬ coming finished products. We rated 10 English teachers during that year. We stumbled and fumbled. Romances budded, blossomed, died. One survived — Gene and Elsie. The year rolled swiftly by. We were becoming only slightly more subdued . . . We were Freshmen! During this year we boasted an undefeated football team. Some of us even had a friend who had a friend who knew personally some member of the football team! The Junior Dramatics Club was orga¬ nized, and Mr. Hogan supersaturated us with the thrilling saga of “Enoch Arden”. We af¬ forded an even 6 Home Economics teachers. Our Sophomore year just ambled by. It was during this year that Mack got political minded and was elected vice-president of the Student Council, later to become President and also State President. Our Junior Year was an eventful one. By sponsoring a turkey dinner, selling gadgets and trinkets, and all but robbing the Haywood County Bank, we earned money to sponsor the Blue Note Prom-Banquet. A successful affair, if we do say so! T he Student Council Convention was a unique occasion, bringing to us students and representatives from all Western North Caro¬ lina. Canton High outdid itself in hospitality. In sports, the Gold Medal Tournament gave our boys an opening to carry off top honors in basketball. We were still only partially subdued! Our Senior year came all too soon. The Paper Bowl Game between Canton and Erwin scored another triumph for our Black Bears. The Class Play with all our natural comedians playing natural parts, shook the building. The Junior-Senior Prom was a fitting introduction to commencement activities. Graduation! With all its happiness and sadness, leaving old friends to make new ones, leaving Canton High to become college stu¬ dents, wives, husbands, to take our places in the world of tomorrow, for we are tomorrow! Forget Canton High; Canton High forget Our grandchildren and great grandchil¬ dren will hear much reminiscing of Canton Eligh. We shall carry many fond recollections of our class, the most unsubdud class in the history of Canton High. 35 Senior Superlatives Most Talented Ruth Whitaker and Dan Matthews Cutest Bill Branson and Joan Reno 36 Senior Superlatives Senior Superlatives Girl Boys Would Most Like to be Seen With Boy Girls Would Most Like to be Seen With Carolyn Lime Joe Brookshire Girl Boys Would Most Like to Come Home To Boy Girls Would Most Like to Have Come Home to T hem Rose Duckett Mack Barrett 38 Senior Superlatives Girl Boys Would Most Like to be Stranded on Desert Island With Boy Girls Would Most Like to be Stranded on Desert Island With Donna Robeson I .a try Scruggs Most Athletic Joretta McCrary Jimmy Abbott Miss Senior Class ANITA BROOKS 40 Mr. Senior Class REX OWEN DAM!) .ILftin JIMMIE ' MATTHEWS JUNIOR OFFICERS 42 Juniors MARK WEST BETTY BRANSON ' MARY EOU TATHAM WOODY SMA I I II RS RAY PARK I R BARBARA BRANSON I.OI.A FORI) Cl IARI.I S SI AMI ' i ROY INCEI MARI NA (JEAN MOOR! 43 Juniors JIMMIE HARDIN BILLIE PRESSLEY DAVID KIRKPATRICK BETTY RATHBONE JEAN WATERS RICHARD ROWE EDDIE MOORE PAUL HENSON FRANCES GIDNEY 44 Juniors BILL NIX ROBERT PLESS EARL LEE LEWIS JEAN BUMGARDNER AUDREY LINER RICHARD KING ROGER HYAT1 GLENNA SUE SURRETT 45 Juniors BOBBY LEDFORD MAXINE O’DIEAR GAIL SPRINKLE CARROLL MEDFORD JOE YOUNG PEGGY CLARK GRACE DAVIS MEDLIN JIM DAYTON BOBBY BURRESS MARION HORTON 46 Juniors BOBBY MOORE BEULAH JOHNSON ADRIENNE SMATHERS TED JONES SAM COMAN IR.YIA SMITH RENA BRANK RONALD HALL 47 Juniors RICHARD CANNON FRANK SORRELLS JANE BEST WILMA SUE CRAWFORD WAYNE HAWKINS FOREST MESSER LILA JO ISRAEL BETTY THREADGILI 48 Juniors 49 Juniors TOMMY CLARK CLARA CABLE MARTHA JOHNSON MEASE SMATHERS CRAIG WHITMIRE ERLENE TAYLOR MADGE MATTHEWS C. C. I PROPHECY By Dorothy June Gidney With consideration and thought where I deem it due, 1 wish to tell what the future holds for you. The owner of the Trail ways is at a loss- In twenty years I see Paul Raby as boss. Bill Jenkins was never one to hold a grudge — In the future I foresee him to be a judge. When Mr. Rikard gets tired of his place, Imagine, in his stead, Maxine’s face! Anita will work for the people ' s welfare, Old women and children will be in her care. In Charles Stinnett’s market you will buy fine meat, Pork roast, beef roast, and pickled pigs’ feet. Jack Kirby doesn’t like to figure on a quiz, But as a taxi driver he’ll be a whiz! Jane Rhodarmer will be cashier in the bank — For this position she’ll have Air. Lovin to thank. As a policeman, Richard will be so fine, Evervbody he will make go between the lines. Way down in Florida by the seashore, Betty Wilson will operate a stationery store. As a movie actress, Joan Trull will take her place, She has the figure, the face, and the grace. For those who roam and wander all aroun’, Betty Morrow will run the finest boarding place in town. Ruth will be the owner of a store so fine- She’ll have pianos to play all the time. For a magician to travel and put on a show, James Parham is the man, I do know. Someone a commercial airline pilot should be, Jack Chapman will be better than you or me. If your stomach yelps, pray pay it some mind, Christine’s restaurant won’t be hard to find. Walter, I know not what to say about you- A machinist? Whatever, you ' ll see it through! There are never too many clerks in a store — Thomasine and Mae Dean will be followed by more. To Donna her career the boys did try to assign, But her picture on the calendar will do just fine. To upholster furniture requires special taste, This Joyce Devlin will do without any haste. It has been suggested that in Sue’s store Barbara Jean be allowed to manage the floor. To sell furniture is quite a different story, This is the way Anna Lee will win glory. Elsie as a stenographer would be very good, But as a stewardess, she ' d do the best she could 104 In nursing and teaching, Carolyn will earn fame, If she doesn’t do both, it’ll be such a shame! Caroline York will sing duets With Chris or Alary Jo — they’re her best bets! Joseph, you ' re slow, but oh! so sure, As a chemist you’d make dirty water pure. Alollie I see balancing books for businessmen, In this position, she’ll do the best she can. Carl James will drive taxis for the Whiteway, A job he must do every single day. Charlie, you’re on the road to fame, Pro-football is a very fine game. Neil McDowell will paint pictures galore, I predict they’ll be seen from shore to shore. Prescriptions will always constitute people’s needs, Here druggist, Ollis Parker, will do his good deeds. When a valve in the faucet tends to slip, Jack Wyatt will be the plumber to stop the drip. There’s always a demand for good secretaries, Rosie will one be until she marries. Dallas, Uncle Sam is calling to you- Serve him well and your duty do. On our Jim Abbott we can rely- I dub him a member of the FBI. T here s a career Charles Hawkins can’t refuse, He will be editor of the daily news. As to her career Conchita has not hinted, But with Phil for a husband, she’ll be contented. Mary Chris as a music teacher in a public school, Will combine music with the golden rule. Interior decorating as a career is exciting, And Kathleen thinks it also inviting. A housewife is what Jorctta wants to be, Maybe she’ll coach basketball all for free. No one thinks Dan will go to the bad- He’ll probably write operas like his Dad. For Joan Reno we can hardly say, Perhaps Mrs. Neil Rhymer some day? When we buy groceries at the Dixie Store, There’ll be R. V. managing the floor. In some opera house you’ll find Adary Jo singing, And throughout the house applause will be ringing. If the store’s Spud’s, he’s out of his mind, “Girtie’s and Spud’s Grocery” — that we’ll find! Judy will be modeling duds on first floor, Of some large and exclusive department store. 105 Linda will be selling much jewelry and rings, And bracelets, and earrings, and many fine things. Billy Jo drives a bus from September ’till May- He’ll drive a Blue Ridge Truck — with much more pay. Mack is president of everything and really rates — Someday he may be president of the United States. Benny will be found upon the stage Reciting script from the printed page. Newlyweds all need to build a home — Just apply to Carleson at the Building Loan. Stanley, I know not what to say to you — 1 think you’d be cute in Navy blue. Henry, from being an electrical engineer you’ll not be blocked, But gracious! My! Goodness! Don’t get shocked! Sue, You’ve been a good clerk in the store, Twenty years from now you’ll be the owner of four! Some lucky girl will lend charm To Larry’s 100,000 acre farm. Carlyle, we’re leaving it up to you To invent blue roses and purple daisies too. La Rue has pearly teeth — to him I’ll say, You’ll be a dentist to earn your pay. Sarah is just super at sewing fine dresses, If she’s your seamstress — your clothes won’t be Messes Someone must operate the trains — don’t you fear! I see Robert Earl as a good engineer. If you need a lawyer to do your pleading, Reeves is the man you’ll be needing! Yvonne as a secretary, I cannot see - - I believe she’ll be happier with a baby on her knee. Gene Mackey will be president of a great firm, Which will make matches both ends to burn. As an advertising agent, George is your man, If he can’t sell your products, nobody can! Pat Hipps desires a nurse to be - - she’s too shy! I see her teaching Speech in Canton High! Gene Devlin’s ambition is high in the sky, For you see an airplane is what he’ll fly! Every quartet needs accompanying on the piano, Wilma will also be the leading soprano. As a photographer, Bill Sutton will be tops, He will take pictures of our farmer’s crops. Neil Rhymer will clip hair so close to the head That his innocent victims will think they have shed. You can’t judge people by the way they look — I do think Joan Sharpe would make a fine cook! If in twenty years the Army comes home, Wilene will settle down, no more to roam. There is room for girls in the Army Air Force, That’s where Patsy Coleman will be, of course. And Frances Fisher to her pupils dear, Will flog and nag with nary a tear. If you need saving from the hearse- Remember Patsy is making a nurse. Bobby Cogburn will be a raiser of cattle, All the night, Hilton, the rustler, he’ll battle. After seeing Bob Miller parade in the play, I can see him on the screen some day. And hear classmates, don’t cut trees from the woods, Because forester Branson will catch you with the goods. Charles Banks will cure your cats and dogs, Mice, sheep, and cows, and. goats, and hogs. To Glenna and Jackie who’s each got a mate — Your future’s been mapped for you by fate. To fill the need for a comedian on television — That’s the way Phillip will earn his million. And Marvin, best wishes to you I give - - A physical ed director as sure as you live! Vernon already in the role of a married man Will work for Champion and earn all he can. Barry’s spare time will all be filled Writing epitaphs for patients he has killed. All you women high prices must pay, If you buy the best dresses — designed by Kay. Joan Fincher as a scheming medical technician, Will latch on to some unsuspecting physician. If you let Patrolman Brookshire catch you speeding, Before a lawyer you’ll surely be pleading. And people all around will walk for miles f or Marie to dress their hair in the latest styles. An authoress is needed to write a best seller, Arlene can do this before marrying her feller! Here’s a trest if you’re a hillbilly fan, On the Grand Ole Opera, Rex’s your man! As you enter a hospital corridor so quiet, There’s Lorene all starched up in white. Some people may think Bill Owen half mad, But he’ll preach many sermons so long and sad. Now dear classmates, don’t take your career as a joke. As for myself, I won’t prophecy, I can only hope! Fatsy Ruth will look at you while you earn your million, She won’t be your secretary until you get your trillion. 107 Work refreshed — Play refreshed HAVE A COKE Bottled under authority of the Coca-Cola Company by Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Asheville, N.
