ECHO Staff’s “Got The Beat” The published edition of the ECHO ev- ery two weeks throughout the school year is the end product of a process which involves many steps. Stories covering many student related topics are assigned to various reporters. The writers’ areas of responsibility include news, sports reporting, editorials, spe- cial features, musical and dramatic ex- tra-curricular coverage, academic news, and other topics of interest to the CHS student body. Photographers are assigned the task of capturing pho- tos which relate to the stories. Once the articles are handed in, they are proofread, typed by one of several staff typists, and proofed again. Next, they are delivered to the downtown Sioux Valley News Office where the ar- ticles are type-set for layout on the actual newspaper page. At this stage, the student staff of editors, assistant editors, and workers, and the adviser reread the articles and begin the lay- out procedure at the news office. This process involves arranging the articles and photos in the proper journalistic format. During the lay-out process, headlines for the articles and cutlines for the photos are written and added on the page. LOWER LEFT Another exciting day in band!? 71 39th Presentation Of Every three years, the Living Pictures are presented at Canton High School. It is something that the school and the whole community take pride in. This year ther were two performances, on December 15 and 16. High school students were chosen to portray the Biblical characters by a committee of high school faculty. Mr. Tupper and Mr. Schultz were in charge of directing the pictures . The Junior high verse choir recited the Bible verses that went with each “picture . They were under the direction of Mrs. Christensen. Between scenes en- tertainment was provided by the Concert Choir, Cham- ber Choir, Junior High Choir, Brass Choir, and two vocal solos were given by Karla Pederson and Ruth Osthus. The vocal music was under the direction of Mr. Coyle; and, the instrumental music was directed by Mr. Siver- son. The following is some historical information about Living Pictures taken from a 1957 Sioux Valley News. The idea for “The Living Pictures is attributed to the imaginative minds of Supt. of Schools C. C. Jacobson, and teachers Agnes Johnson and Isabel Hegness. The pictures were first shown as part of a play, The Nativity of the Prince of Peace. The script was written by Miss Johnson, Miss Hegness, Miss Jorgine Hansen, Miss Beulah Tuttle and Harvey Moen. Moen also directed the choir and chorus for the first production. Some of the persons appearing in the first “Pictures” were Audrey Lier as Mary, and Ralph Roti as Joseph. Others were Roxy Falde, Claricie Visser, Hilma Erickson, Lila Mae Feldman, Sidney Hanson, Oliver Overseth, Lucy Jo Smith and Elizabeth Skyberg. The repeated show does not seem to have an old stuff effect on the communi- ty. In fact, after so many years of having to turn away people — some of whom had driven many miles to see the pictures — school officials in 1955 decided to pre- sent the program twice during the Christmas season. And it still plays to capacity crowds. The Living Pictures UPPER LEFT: This setting is entitled CHRISTMAS CHIMES. The angels, from left to right, are Veronica Brenner. Mother and Fa- ther Maxwell (Janet Ulmer and Bruce Bogue) have long had their hands full with daughter Connie (Pam Espland) and son Wilbur (Mike Rebischke), their only ray of sunshine is daughter Betty Lou (Lisa Foland). or so they think. She has made top grades in school and is a real worker. Aunt Mary (Heather Loken), goes as far as to say She’s practically beloved.” But, unknown to all ex- cept Betty Lou — and her best friend Bernadine (Mari Wissink) — she keeps a make believe dia- ry. When Mr. Maxwell decides to get to know his children better he brouses through the secret diary, not knowing everything written in it is make believe. He is totally shocked when he reads that his daughter Connie is eloping with her boyfriend Marvin (Tim Mini- han) and his son Wilbur and pal Hercules (Darin Wiebe) have fal- len into the hands of a treacher- ous gang headed by Conrad. After looking over the diary with his wife and Aunt Mary, they de- cide to call Miss Murray (Christi Koomia). Betty Lou’s teacher. Plus, J.C. Mallory (Jim Minihan), pop's boss drops by to check over some papers. It is finally dis- covered that the diary is only make believe, but not before things just couldn’t get anymore complicated. This mystery-comedy, directed by Dorothy Trumm and Bob Freese, was the most highly at- tended play at CHS in several years. It consisted of 24 cast members, and 28 other seniors each involved in some way. Mummies came to life again in this mystery-comedy set in the lobby of an Egyptian hotel over- looking the pyramids. Omar and his young American friends are fascinated by a mummy and they read aloud an incantation found on her body. Doing this brings the mummy to life. Her name is Teppi, a friendly, humorous Egyptian teenager who died thousands of years ago. Howev- er, another mummy is also brought back to life and. unlike likeable Teppi, Kharoon is evil and angry. Teppi is just as fright- ened of humans as they are of her. A hotel employee named Mustafa has Kharoon under his control and is trying to manipu- late the situation. Terror and sus- pense blended with laughter as one hectic episode precipitated another. A matinee was per- formed in front of the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders, and the fi- nal performance, with approxi- mately 350 attending, was held Friday at 7:30 p.m. on April 8th.
