“
Cosmos refers to everything in creation, from the smallest atoms to the most distant celestial bodies. The Cosmos is all that is, or ever was or ever will be. We ourselves are made of starstuff. We are a way for the Cosmos to know itself. The Earth is embedded in fifteen billion years of cosmic time. It is fifteen billion light years to the Cosmic Horizon. Our planet is a mere speck of matter circling one small star in the backwaters of a typical galaxy of four hundred billion suns. The immensities of space and time encompass enormous emptiness, spectacular beauty, and perhaps, many other intel- ligent beings who wonder as we do. The 198V82 yearbook staff dedicates this volume of the CHS yearbook, Backtrackin', to the Cosmos, which we have just begun to understand. We invite you to come with us on journey to a new dimension, a distant time, a Mr-away plap n the years 1981 and 1982, and reach for the Itars! Content Student Life Page 5 Academics ................ High school life just wouldn't be nor- mal without the high school romances. What student hasn't gossiped about who's dating whom? The Ro- meos and Juliets of teen life will always be a popular grapevine issue. Going steady with an individual is certainly a valid learning experience and can give a person a sense of security. They also performed at last year's Junior Senior Banquet. Stairway To Heaven Prom Evokes Boundless Fun This year's prom, hosted by the senior class, was a great success. Those allowed to attend the event were CHS seniors, juniors, and sophomore servers. Many students also brought guests from out-of- town or from other grades. The highlight of the year for CHS's eighty-eight band students was a trip to St. Louis, Missouri. Boarding two Greyhound buses at 6:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 15th, and trekking 620 miles proved to be tiring, but when students saw the lights of St. Louis, everyone perked up . At 8:00 that evening the buses arrived at the Ramada Inn, just across the street from Six Flags Amusement Park. Excitement was heightened by the many lights at the amusement park and every- one anticipated what the next three days would pro- vide. On Friday morning everyone enjoyed a tour of the Anheiser-Busch Brewery. The famous Clydsdales were also seen in the stables. Post-brewery agenda included a view from the top of the 630 foot Gate- way Arch. After eating lunch on the world's only McDonald's riverboat. the musicians prepared for competition in the Six Flags Band Festival. All three judges gave the band a I rating for their perfor- mance of Variations on a Korean Theme by John Barnes Chance. Only one other band in the C division achieved the same high ratings: Winterset, Iowa. They captured 1st place. Friday night brought a rain-delayed pro baseball game and the CHS'ers witnessed the triumph of the Cardinals over the Phillies, 3-2. The band was even flashed an official welcome on the Busch Stadium scoreboard. On Saturday morning all were let loose at Six Flags until 5:00. Many endured a two-hour wait for a ride on the world's fastest and longest rollercoaster, the Screamin' Eagle. Students participated in a banquet given for all twenty-six attending bands that evening. A riverboat ride down the Mississippi greeted band members and chaperones Sunday morning and the trip home began that afternoon. All arrived safe and sound in Canton at 1:00 a.m. Monday.
