The Backtrackin' staff has chosen television programs as the theme of the 1978-79 annual. The influence of the medium of television is present in each of our lives. It influences our attitudes and our life styles. Programs such as Mork and Mindy and Saturday Night Live are weekly favorites of CHSers. From these shows we've learned terms like Excuse me! and Nanoo, nanoo. Our annual is the TV monitor of the 1978-79 year at Canton High School. Sit back and tune in to the activities of the student body of Canton High School. 3IN A$ «(OA®3(0N B3C3K BAAS©E?GA?5B ECfflffl©! B3I®83fflij Canton High School was honored to have two teachers who devoted many years of service to students and to the school. The Backtrackin' '79 staff would like to recognize their devotion by dedicating this year's annual to Mr. Dick Van Holland and Mr. Elwood Dietrich. Mr. Dick VanHolland has devoted eighteen years teaching at Canton High School. During these years he has taught typing, accounting, consumer economics, shorthand and office education. Also he spent fifteen years as Echo advisor; the Echo received All State awards. He said during all his years here he has never really had any problems and has truly enjoyed working with the CHS students. He likes to make people who think they're a nobody come to think of themselves as a somebody. We are losing a teacher loved by all. We will long remember Mr. Dick VanHolland. Arbeit macht das leben suss , is one of the many sayings that has made Mr. Elwood Dietrich a popular and loved teacher at CHS. Mr. Dietrich has spent seventeen years teaching and coaching at CHS. German I and II, consumer math, fun math, general business, and geometry were the courses he taught. He also coaches boys' basketball and assisted with the football and track teams. Mr. Dietrich is well-known for his love of golf; champagne, Cadillacs and cash also fit under his list of favorites. The Backtrackin' staff wishes Mr. Dietrich the very best of luck wherever he may travel, whatever he choses to endeavor. Aud Wiedersehn! ‘The Homecoming’ Of 1978 Is A Success It was a warm September night with a breeze of excitement for ten candidates nominated for homecoming Queen and Master. In the fall, marching rehearsals were held every band period. Our half-time show featured a dance routine to Mickey Mouse March. The band was one of the participants in the Augustana College Parade. The band was also invited to play at the SDSU band clinic along with the O'Gorman and Maple Valley school bands. The high point of the year was the band's trip to Kansas City. The four day trip included a tour of the Truman Library, Arrowhead Stadium, and a whole day at World's of Fun Park. The Pops Concert was a success. It was a fun year and I'm glad that I was a part of it. Marie Listopad, president BAND MEMBERS-ROW ONE, left to right: L. Nelson, L. McKenny, J. Larson, M. Goodman, J. Gibson, K. Verick, D. We had just one more team to beat, Now my sad tale I'll tell. The final game was soon to start. We knew that we would win. There was no way for us to lose, But then it did begin. One referee was short and me an. We all shrank In his glare. He growled at us, his gruff voice said, You'd better all play fair! The other one was not so bad, He was so very tall. But he, too, feared the other's wrath And agreed with every call. I didn't remember much that night, Everything was a haze. My parents told me later that I was in a great daze. I do remember one thing though. It seems that when I shot The ball did not go through the hoop Two points was all I got. To make a painful story short. We didn't win that game. We had a chance to be the Champs But never reached our fame. Katy Rudolph Girls' basketball is a rapidly growing sport at Canton High School. As the years have passed, the teams have improved.
