,,., .145 W' Discovering from a student vote lost fall that most of the students '27 would like to have a school annual, and many would be willing to ' help in its production, Canton High students decided to put out the school's first annual in 20 years. To aid in the drive for annual soles, a prize of a free annual was awarded to the student whose name was drawn in assembly. Bernice Homandberg held the lucky number and was refunded by means of 250 pennies. Lorraine Mar- ken, senior pictured at right, was chosen by those who bought annuals to be the Backtrackin' Princess of l946. Lorraine was art editor of Bocktrackin, a member of Scitamard, vocal music groups, forensics, student council, and was also chosen as the year's DAR representative. oi' Q A A-fwlg -.'L.oX.A l- L 4 Vocalists Reorganize After being inactive as an organization for the past two years, the Boys' Glee Club was reorganized in the fall with the aim of giving more boys a chance to sing. Under the direction of Miss Mary Geppert, vocal department director, it has become another of the important extra curricular activities offered by the Canton High School. From the Boys' Glee Club an octette was chosen consisting of Monroe Bell and Walter Aasheim, first tenorsg Sidney Anderson and Russell Stearns, second tenors, Ross Roe and Harris Jacobson, baritones, and Roxy Falde and Laurel Gray, basses. The first appearance of this octette was at the annual Christmas program. In the picture above are the Glee Club members. Starting at the top left they are: W. Ambur, W. Aasheim, H. Jacobson, L. Schwartz, E. Goeman, S. Hanson, L. Slcelly, H. Ulrickson, R. Stearns, L. Gray, R. Falde, D. Juel, G. McVay, M. Noteboom, J. Truhe, B. Wilkins, 0. Petterson, R. Fossum, R. Sorum, J. Mickelson, M. Bell, R. Molstod, S. Anderson, and R. Lien. R. Roe is not pictured. Of added interest to the students and others who have heard them, being the only small vocal group in the school composed of bath boys and girls, tho mixed octette has been very successful this year. For the seventh consecutive time, the Canton High School journalism staff received an All State Superior rating on the Echo, the school paper. The award was given to the '44-'45 paper edited by Claricie Visser, with a rating of 87 points out of a possible 96. Commenting an this paper, the judge, H. S. Hegner, former teacher of journalism at State College at Brookings, wrote the following statements: G News writing is far better than the majority of other school papers. Sports are well written, have a good style, coverage exceedingly well handled. Much time and effort are required to achieve such a fine page. The journalism class is justly proud of such favorable comments. Echo Rates All State Quill and Scroll, the international society of high school journalists, each year awards honors to oustanding juniors and seniors. Admittance is based on the quality of published articles written by the applicants. Local members of the society are pictured upper left as follows: B. Burney, lower left of pictureg D.
