1974 MARINE BIRTHDAY BALL On Friday night, 8 November 1974, the CANOPUS Marine Detachment observed the 199th birthday of the United States Marine Corps by holding a Ball at Queen's Hall, Dunoon. This highly successful social function was attended by approximately 290 American and Scottish guests, and was completely planned by the Detachment. This commemorative event, by design a dinnerfdance, was highlighted by the birthday cake-cutting ceremony. A particularly notable feature of the ceremony was the piping-on of the cake by a bagpiper, an act which has become traditional in the Holy Loch. The guest of honor, Captain James Fl. LEWIS, USN, COMSUBRON FOURTEEN, noted in his remarks the important role played by the Marine Corps in the Nation's defense and the small but vital contribution of the CANOPUS Marine Detachment to the success of the Site One program. In addition, the Commandant's birthday message was read. Once the cake had been cut, the Detachment Commanding Officer, Captain G. M. BROOKE Ill, presented the first piece to the oldest Marine present, Gunnery Sergeant Floy VASQUEZ, and the se- cond piece to the youngest Marine present, Lance Corporal DAVID B. GILLICH. After dinner, dancing continued until 0100, and it was the consensus of those attending that the Birthday Ball had been outstanding. l l i i l
