An ppfeciation Mlss MARY MERCER Miss Mary Mer-cer, who taught at Cauronsburlg High School for thirty years, re- tired last s-Drin-g and returned to her home at Salbsbfurg. She was a graduate of Salts- burg High School. of Indiana State Normal S-chool of Pennsylvania. and of Penn State College. Before coming to -Canonsburg, Miss Mercer first taught for one year a .one-room school of eight grades. Her second year of teaching fwas spent in a- Uwo-room school, where she taught the first four grades. Then she served as teacher of the urprper grades in the Saltsburg ,Schools for ten! years. - From 1915 until her retirement i11 1945, Miss Mercer was a teacher of mathe- matics at Canons-burg High School, Black grade book in hand, she recorded successes and failures. A fascinating little manner of speaking and a twinkle in hor blue eyes endeared her to her classes. She was quiet and reserved, yet she possessed a dYH9-HUC fone-e that enabled her to impart knowledge in such a manner as to get real results. Many boys in service re-turned to than-k Miss Mercer for the excellent training they had received.
