ROW 4: Burgess, Reese, Ambrose, Flowers, Scott, Cass, Verona, Kordella, Dunn, Cernava. BIG MACS GAINED EXPERIENCE. Although the first football team of Canon-McMillan Senior High School encountered difficulty in defeating its opponents during the 1959 season, two players were selected for the Western Class AA All-Conference Team. Pre-school training in August, found the Big-Mac football coaches faced with a problem of getting the team acquainted, organized, and perfected. Through the diligent work of head coach, Al Como and his assistants, Val Rizzo, Anthony Paesano, and Ralph Jelicp the team progressed to new heights in team work, cooperation, and obedience. Linemen Macik, Olenn, Ortosky, Arrigoni, Lesefka, Verona, Gregory, and Kohler hit hard with a swift offensive and defensive attack. Fast running and quick thinking backfield men consisted of: Verchek, Rossero, Foley, Ross, Reese, Teo- dori, O'Korn, and McVerry. Western Class AA All-Conference Team selected end, Steve Macik to the first team and back, Larry Ver- chek to the second team. This 22 man team consisted of outstanding players in Western Conference. The schools of Mt. Lebanon, Washington, Trinity, Munhall, Uniontown, Baldwin, and Canon-McMillan made up the Western Conference. Even though the Big-Macs encountered repetitive defeats, perseverance and a fighting spirit prevailed among the players.
