At his will he was able to call upon the three genii of the lamp 1 -- leadership, knowledge, and fellowship -- who in turn were able to offer many opportunities. Those who heeded the words of the genii and put to use their teachings outgrew their petty ways and soon were spreading far and Wide-T that which they had learned. Others who iscoffed and ridiculed soon found that thejfhad little use for them or their ways . Our school, like this magic lamp, is a moniiment to learning. With it we, too, may have the opportunity to grow within ourselves, as the people of the past have. Let the wisdom of the geniig become our wisdom and after being taught, let us be- come tealchers. f - - - -- F- Q '. ::'- - av 'F r- -o f- ,r-fx.. A- If MQYMW 5 1: CLASSES XA-A gifs? XX f O nf! U., N. xv., .0 'J Jr' 1 ,mf JB , 1 BMA Have you noticed how differently the band sounds lately? At last you can stop wondering why. The credit for this new sound goes to Mr. Don Threlkeld, music co-ordinator of the Canon City schools, and the band's new Stroboconn. The Stroboconn, by the way, is an elec- tronic tuning device. Also helping to improve the sound of the band was a new baritone sax- ophone, and two new French horns. The band has a revamped look with the addition of filing cabinets for music and a high-fidelity record player. New spats, plumes, and gloves give the uniforms an appearance of distinction. The instrumentalists opened this year 's activities with several precision half-time shows, highlighted by a patriotic show on Veterans' Day. Among the other band activities last fall were a trip to Florence for Pioneer Day and to Colorado Springs for a game, as well as many civic functions in which the band participated, both as a group and as individuals. From the concert band, 20 members were chosen to be in the Dutch band. With a few additions the Dutch band became the pit orchestra for the band's two money-making shows: the Band-Polio Benefit Show and Tiger T alesg also in the line of money-making projects was the annual Band Booster Day. On April 5, the band journeyed to Salida for a band clinic, and two weeks later they par- ticipated in the annual Music Festival at Pueblo. Among other spring activities was a con- cert, the band banquet, and Blossom Day. The officers of the 70 piece band during this year were: president -- DeVaughn Demi- cellg vice -president -- Ted Hanford, secretary -- Clara Darnell. Many of the other bands- men were elected to the various offices relating to the running and upkeep of the band. Ver- non Baumer led the band as drum major and student conductor. Two of the senior clarinetists were chosen to be in the A11-State Honor Band: Sylvia McDermeit and Vernon Baumer took part in this band which met in Greeley the last week in March . The last scheduled performance of the band was commencement, when a new pit band, formed without any of the seniors, played. The seniors performed with the band for the last time on May 12, Field Day. Thus the CCHS band ended one of the busiest years in its history. Music rang through the halls of CCHS just before Christmas vacation startedg we were being serenaded by the chorus. They again took part in Christmas celebrations on January 12, at the Christmas-tree burning. The chorus had a busy second semester this year, starting when Mr . Don Threl- keld assumed the directorship of the group at that time. Several chorus members par- ticipated in programs given around Canon City. In April, some members of the organi- zation went to Fort Carson to take part in a show given at the hospital there . The complete chorus took part in the annual State Music Festival held in Pueblo on April 19. In addition to this competition several individuals in the chorus went to Pueblo on April 23 for the solo and small ensemble division of the Music Festival. A concert was the highlight of the May schedule, but Girls' Chorus the chorus also entered a float in the Blossom Day parade in May. The small choir sang over the Public Address system on World Day or Prayer, and a boys' chorus took part in Tiger Tales. The regular girls' chorus sang for Y-Teens, and in- dividuals in this group performed on various other programs. The year's activities were drawn to a close at com- mencement when the chorus presented the musical portion of the program. ROT Q5-f MfSg'f- Ed Harding SFC. In Italy, a girls' trio threw Three Coins In A Fountain, and in Spain a bullfight was shown on film. There was dancing and singing in a Parisian cafe, and a four piece modern combo played in aLondon cellar club. Deanna Curtis sang Smilin' Thru, a dance line per- formed a reel in an Irish setting, and a Dutch garden was the scene for some top flightwooden shoe technique. There was a Viennese ballroom, and Mount Fujiyama was the background as Marlene Schlaf sang One Fine Day. One could almost feel the ocean breeze when six lovelies did the hula. Brazil was represented by a very fine bolero routine, and Mexico featured the Mexican Hat Dance . The trip ended with a visit to the Canadian Mounties, singing Stout Hearted Men, and the entire cast returned in a brilliant finale emulating the various parts of America, singing Dixie, Sidewalks of New York, California, Here I Come, Yankee Doodle, and finally, This Is My Country.
