A VOCAL EXPRESSIONS The Chorus started off with a terrific task but a whale of a lot of fun this year. They tackled I-Iandel's great oratorio, The Messiah. With the help of some members of the Abbey, the Academy, and townsfolk, they very ably presented it in early December to a packed house. Next on the agenda was Christmas carolling. For six days the 60 guys and gals of the A Cappella choir hopped into school buses bound for all the grade schools. There they sang carols to all the little shavers, who enjoyed the program very much. lt was the chorus who officially ended school for the Christmas holidays with their carolling up and down the halls. On the night of December 21, the choir had their annual shindig. Everyone piled into a truck, and they struck out singing carols across the countryside. Theyfvisited the Odd Fellows Home and several old folks' homes with their glad tidings. ,Then back to the Youth Center they came for hot chocolate and doughnuts, and a general good time. ! l CONCERT CHOIR l SMALL CHOIR l BACK ROW: Left To Right: W. Within the 60-voice A Cappella choir there was a Small Choir of ZZ vocalists which met betimes at the hour of 7:30 A. M. for practice. They made numerous appearances around the town and motored to Camp Carson to entertain the hospitalized soldiers there. A spring concert was performed jointly with the band in April. Later inthe month the vocalists entered Colorado State Music Festival competition in Pueblo. Harley Rice's post to handle the records, statistics, and other paper work. The battalion came under strict supervision and more rigid xstandards when Capt. Ernest Bobko joined the military department in Marchto succeed Capt. Harwood as Professor of Military Science and Tactics. Sgt. Hare organized the first girls' rifle team, in the recent memory of CCHS, out of a group of honorary sponsors. Cadet marksmenwere coached by Sgt. Harding with a 4-Won-3-lost record. The battalion formed for parade under sun and through snow to march on several occasions. The reason? --new uniforms. The long-awaited, smart garb was unpacked in time for Homecoming doings on October 31. Of an entirelynew style--black flashers, high collars, braid--theyhave hit a high note withboth onlookers and band members. Drum Major Doug Tureck sported a handsome, 12-inch fur dome with bright gold trim. A year of bustling activity included half-time shows during the gridiron season, Pioneer Day parade at Florence, Apple Day at Penrose, anda band clinic in Salida, which proved helpful to the band members. Not only didthe band participate in activities such as these, but it also did some fine concert work. After conductinga commendable winter concert, the first of its kind in many years, they shareda spring concert with the vocal department. The Tiger band traveled to Pueblo in April to the Colorado State Music Festival. The band consisted of some 63 players this year. From this nucleus, several groups were organized, such as the 20 -piece Dutch Band, which played for most of the Bengal Hardwood games and pep rallies, and a jaz z combo with Leroy Anderson, Jack Coats, Vern Baumer, and Vic - Y- Becco beating the tempo. Vern Baumer set the beat for the pep band as student director. The Keynotes of Rhythm dance band realized its s e c ond year of success. They have played for many dances and special programs for civic groups, and they were a popular feature in Tiger Tales and exchange as s embly pro- MR. However, the team never lost its spirit. Although out-weighed and out-classed in most of the contests, the team kept fighting. Whether ankle-deep in mud, or under a hot autumn sun, the players remained true to the Canon High tradition of sportsmanship, putting emphasis on good, clean football. Its weaknesses will be forgotten long before the memory of its attitude in the face of bad fortune. - Eleven seniors finished the season, and they will be hard to replace. Even so, the Black and Gold has many underclassmen potentials, and looks forward to a better day. Doyle Goodale, star quarterback and co-captain, was a source of strength when the going was rough. Co-captain Willard Walker, an excellent halfback and fine punter, was a stone wall on defense. Bob Corrie was a dependable offensive-defensive tackle. Gary Reed knew his job as center. Ken K6St61',at quarterback, made up for his size with a fast, tricky game. Gary Evans, end, was there when needed. Bob Ore, end, disregarded his lack of weight. Tackle Dick Stienmier went after the holes in the opponent's offense. Ben Lakinwas fighting as tackle. Roland Rice, in his first year, didn't get in on too many plays. End Bus Pray was the best match in weight and size for Canon's opponents. The loss of Art McMillan earlyin the season was a severe blow. Willard Walker and DeVaughnDemicell were named to the all-conference second string. Honor- able mention was made of Goodale, Corrie, Evans, and Reed. M BENGAL CAGERS The Canon City Tigersdowned Las Animas 64 to 49 in starting off the '53-'54 hoop season with a bang. Playing two nights straight proved too much for the Black and Gold tho, as they lost to a sky-scraping, State Champ team from South Denver, 53- 54. Fre At home, they won in a hard 'n' close overtime, 57-55, over the hot-shooting Lakewood Tigers. e throws by Kester were decisive tallies. Canon fell before a hot West Denver team, 7Q-55, in a sad third periodg and again dropped a game, this time to the Alamosa Maroons, 51-45. The Tigers won over a scrappy Colorado Springs five, 53-51, in athriller won in the last minute with a lay-up by Goodale. A close game proved a hard earned victory in overtime for Grand Junction, 54-51. The Canon five defeated Grand Junction in the second game of the series, 54-44. The Bengals bowled over Salida by Z0 points, 57-37. - Canon Citylost to Pueblo Centennial 54 -41 with poor shooting. After gaining a low point margin at the half, they also lost to Trinidad, 45-42. Then they lost again to Pueblo Central 65-62. They whipped the league-leading Trinidad Miners, 48-44, with 'a great display of hustle and fine shooting at the free throw lineg then lost to Colorado Springs, 56-45, when they seemed to be too tired to get started. The basketball season was played against opponents who were better teams only in height. The Tigers displayed some of the greatest fight and hustle that ever a hoop team has showed. After a peppy lead-off in most of the games, the Tigers slumped in weak third and fourth periods, then countered the depression with a vigorous, desperate rally in the crucial, closing minutes. Battling Willie Walker was the spark of the hardwood., Kester, Goodale, and Evans were top scorers. t 5 We sow it and grow it, Our knotholes are not holes, THOMAS AND KIRKTON PRODUCE DIERKS LUMBER COMPANY OFFICERS MISS BETTY JENKINS Sponsor V . . . .
