Although we have done this so many times before, we still have a tendency to glance out upon the vast Ocean of Memories. But theres something different about it today. As we look more closely we notice the difference -there are four of the many waves of memories distinctly larger than all the others, and each of these larger in succession. Upon further exami nation we discover that these particular waves are filled with the memories of our four joy filled high school years. lhe smaller of the four waves, representing our freshman year, rolls rather timidly toward the shore, for this was the way in which we entered Cannon High School to heeome ac- quainted with the customs of the school where we would spend three and one-half delightful vcars. As the wave draws nearer, we remember the ones we chose to lead us that yea1'. Bill Bennett led us as president, Linny Baker, vieef president, Marthelaine VVilliams, secretary, llilf da Maulden. treasurer. To represent our class in Council, we chose .lane Shelton and Benny llargett. These officers and our class adviser, Miss Lois Smith, led us through a verv successful freshman year. i Another newcomer our freshman year was our principal, hir. F. O. Drummond. But hc, as we did, soon hecame well acquainted with Cane non fligh. The main actiyitv our first vear was the liresh- man Class Party, which was in the form of a square dance held in the school gymnasium. It was the height of conversation for ever-so-long afterwards. As the first small wave hreaks and splashes around our feet, we look out towards the second wave, which comes toward us more bravely than did the first, for this was the year in which we shed our titles of Greenies', and hecame known as Sophisticated Sophomoresf' Ar a class meeting our second year, we chose as our officers: Linny Baker, president, vieef president, Buck Cooke, secretary, Carolyn Bost: and treasurer, Kenneth Argo. janice Earle Denf nis and Kenneth Argo represented our class in Council, and Linnv Baker was chosen from our class as Student Government Treasurer. VVe were very proud to have an officer in the Student Government, for as freshmen we had not heen eligible. Uur sophomore adviser, Miss Elizaheth Graf ham, aided us in planning our class party, which was held at lXiirror's Lake. Swimming, playing golf, and especially eating were enjoyed hy everyone. Four of our classmates, Linnv Baker, -lean Kay Davvault, Charles Efird, and ,Ianiee Earle Denf nis, were tapped into the National llonor Society that vear. We were indeed proud of them, for very few sophomores get into that organization. Then, as we stand lost in rememhranees, the third large wave rolls in and hreaks at our feet, hearing on its crest those wondrous recollections of our junior year. 'lihat vear jane Shelton and Buck Cooke repre- sented us in Council. Once again we chose Linny Baker president. ln fact, our slate of oflif cers was the same as it had heen our sonhomore year except for a few changes of office. Kenneth Argo hccame our vice-president, Carolyn Bost, our seeretarv, and Buck Cooke, our treasurer. Miss Marjorie llarrell hecame our junior adviser. ilihcn came our first class play. llow thrilled we were that it was our class who could now have the joy of four weeks of practicing. nutting on grease paint, and painting scenery. Our nlzn' was i'Bahv's Night Out, directed hv Miss Ade' line Bogers. ln Decemher of that vear, the seniors honored us with a heautiful Senior-.Iunior Prom, using the theme VVinter VVonderland. Large snow men, lamp posts, and snow laden trees carried out the scene picturesquely. I im- 'rm CLASS PROPHECY While browsing around an old gift shop the other day, I came upon a beautiful old mirror. It was covered with dust, so I am sure it must have been there many, many years. The frame was done in a beautiful and intricate design, so I bou ht the mirror and took it home. Upon cleaning the glass, I discovered something very miraculous. I could look into the mirror and see things which were to happen many years hence. As I kept shining it, I saw some of my classmates from A. L. Brown High School in their chosen professions. Some of the first to come into view were John Rufty, Glain Pennell, and Richard Re nolds, who were serving as ministers in various churches in North Carolina. Also in the religious field were Joan Thomas, Betty June Compton, and Evelyn Taylor. This was ver interesting, so I looked more closely as more scenes fiom the future unfolded. I saw a very impressive building which turned out to be a memorial hospital in New York, with Marthelaine Williams, M.D., as director. Employed at this famous hospital were Janet Edwards, Linny Baker Cone of the foremost dentists in Americaj, Joe Thomas, Betty Ann Phillips, Thelma Sloo , and Doris Sloop. Just across the street, stood a modfern glass drugstore owned by Donald Puntch, pharmacist, and his staff of soda-ierksf' Some of these included Mickey Caudle, Paul Barbee, and Don Hogue. The store had a special beauty salon, managed by Norma Hardy ffamous beauticianj, Barbara Sills, Patsy White, and Nancy Viola. As the pictures continued to come into view, I saw many K.H.S. girls making very comfortable livings as models. Carolyn Bost was to model for an agency co- owned by Bobby Walker andp Bill Bennett. Also pulling down thousands in this field were Dot Childers, Evelyn Honeycutt, Peggy Austin, and Carolyn Morris. Some of my classmates did not seem to like the ground for I found many up in the wild blue yonder. ane Shelton, Betty Ann Helms, Phyllis Moss, Geraldine oodell, and Peggy Beaver were airline hostesses. Jimmy Howell, Jimmy Ledbetter and Gene Lankford found the life of a pilot very exciting, while Bobby Quay did not like to be up in the air. He was interested in planes, and being the millionaire he was, he owned the three major airlines in the United States. Caleb Glass was owner of the largest record store in the world, recording and selling thousands of records made by Peggy Freeze and Loretta Marshall on vocals. Jean Kay Dayvault was making a hit with her piano recordings, while the combination of Johnny Bowers, Donald Anderson, Troy Doby, Don Roberson and Dolly Cruse was taking over the place in discs once occupied by the f'Four Hits and a Miss. Though the War was long since over, many guys of the class of '52 were serving in the armed forces. Ralph Strube, Furman Dillard, Max McKinney, and Morris Helms, along with some of the supposedly weaker sex. Janice Honeycutt, Bonnie Shepherd, Betty Talbert, and Peggy Hudson were among these. The pictures were getting a little dim, so I began cleaning again. As I rubbed harder, the movie world came into view and I saw Joann Watson, Emily Cara- way, Phyllis Metcalf, Joe Lambert, Frank Chisolm, Jerry Russell as some of the most famous film stars. Troy Payne was the owner of a chain of vaudeville theatres which featured such acts as the dancing com- bination of Joyce Falls, Betty Ruth Helms, Phyllis Whitley, and Jeroline Watts. Also starred was a tap dance routine by Harold Hudspeth and Eugene Benton. Page Thirty-four In the business world, some of the raduates of K.H.S. were proving themselves very capablhle. Millicent Rosenberg was one of the top commercial artists, and her staff was composed of Violet Jean Raye, Nadine Clement, and Joyce Peterson. Sign painters employed by Millie, Inc. were Lewis Morrow, Boyd Vander- burg, Charles Wellman, and Donald Black. Ownin the largest grocery stores in the world I saw R. B. andq C. W. Barnhardt. A few of the clerks work- ing for the Barnhardts were Eugene Benfield, Donald Upright, Allen Leonard, Kyle Hooks, and Hunter Hay. Since women cab drivers have come into existence, I was not surprised to find Theresa Dwyer, Nancy Matthews, Shirley Phillips, and Carleen Rogers em- ployed in this work. As I continued to gaze into this marvelous mirror, some of the outstanding characters in the literary world caught my eye. A best seller by Jerry Armstong entitled The Story of lily Life was being considered for a special iournalistic award. Other great writers were Wallace' Watkins, Creston Erwin, Lewis Vernon, Phyllis Jean Smith, Gladys Davis, and Nancy Barger. Television, now being as common in the American home as the electric light, was being invaded by such performers as Howard Holloway, Mason Parks, Dan Castor, and Bobby Rogers on the We'll Answer Any- thing quiz program. Quiz master for this program is Buford Howard. More rubbing upon the glass revealed Vivian Honey- cutt as the owner of a large chain of teen-age clothing stores. Designing the exclusive frocks for her were Etta Sue Boggs, Beverly Cobb, Betty Black, and Bobbie Jean Clayton. Of course I knew many of the gals in my class would get married and raise cute lil' younguns! Shirley Maness, Betty Lane Fleming, Marianne Sherrill, and Elsie Mae Cox were a few of these little housewives. Hilda Maulden had opened a studio teaching baton twirling and strutting. In the same building with the studio, Charles Efird had established a gym for muscle building and training prize fighters. Some of the greats in the boxing world he had trained were Alton Wellman and Charles Ketner. Wrestling attracts many of the stronger sex, and I saw Swann King, Bill Funderburk. and Wayne Biles taking some of the big prize money for winning wrestling matches in Madison Square Garden. Teaching at some of the finer colleges in the United States were some of my classmates who had excelled in the various subiects. Ollena Price, teaching Bible: Martha Matthews, trigg Ruth Eanes. commercial courses, Kathryn Bailes, Lating Hugh Parham, teaching Biol02Vy and Gail Bost teaching two courses in English. Ken Argo was also on the teaching staff at one of the largest colleges. He was coaching a football team through its third unbeatable season. Some of the hill-billy enthusiasts of the class of '52 I saw broadcasting on their own programs on one of the central net works on radio. Included in this were Buzzy Country Boy Yarborough, Comas Smith, John Sechler, Sherrill Austin, Ray Dixon, and Arnold Moss. Though it seemed to me that everything possible had been invented, I saw Buddy Shinn, Everette Sloop and Kenneth Stokes trying to modernize this old world of ours with a complete push-button home. Assisting these great scientists were Martha White, Juanita Simpson, and Julia Ann Price. Y ,mmc . ..Q..,,- CLASS PRCPHECY The nose for news attracted some of the better iournalists of my class, and I saw Janice Munclay, Betty Ann Phillips, Doris Goble, and Geraldine Holshouscr reporting for various top newspapers in the country. Co-editors for one of the largest were Kenneth Huffman and Franklin Sloop. As I continued to gaze into my mirror, I saw a dramatic play in action with Bobby Russell directing. Multi-millioniare Earl Lentz was financing the produc- tion, and starring in it was Kay Savage. ln supporting roles were Valerie Lawing, Ethel Patton, blargarct Peterson, JlIl1lTlV Belk, Marvin Leonard, and Ray Petrea. The scene suddenly shifted, and for a moment I thought the pictures yvcre over. Then I saw the beau- tiful rolling farmland of Virginia. Robert Taylor owned a completely modernized farm, and D. and Ralph Cauble owned Cauble's Dairy. one of the best known in Virginia. Also in this section of the country I sayv L. Gibson and John Troutman who own a large stable of racing horses. Two of their Jockeys, Buise Steen and Jerry Tilley, had won the Kentucky Derby. l saw that Benny VVright had his own ambulance service, and was credited with saving many lives. He was connected with the memorial hospital I had al- ready seen. Still enthralled by this strange phenomenon, I saw that some young ladies were proving that this is a woman's world. Annie Armstrong owned a huge cater- ing service which planned such parties as the wedding reception of New York socialite Mildred Allen. Katrina Cartner and Norma Chambers were some of the most well-knovvn interior decorators in the busi- ness. They remodeled the offices of Paul Tuggle, oil magnate, and the home of Billy lNlcVVhorter, manu- facturer of nylon hose. Some of the hot-rod drivers I saw in the future were Gene Eddlcman, Reese Bradley, and Frankie Combs. I then saw a view of Carolina Beach, with some of my former classmates working there. Nancy Lentz and Janice Earle Dennis owned a fashionable group of tourist cottages. Buck Cooke and Kenneth Childers owned a fine hot-dog stand. John Harclister had a costume iewclry shop. Leaving the beach, the picture changed to Paris. where I saw Theresa Ensley. Ruth Adams, Geraldine Combs, and Melvena Bonds designing clothes for fashion-wise women all over the world. - ln the society world, some of the well-known debu- tantes of the day were Janet Buckwell, Janice Monday. Phyllis Barringer, Joyce McCollum, and Ruby Edwards. Owning a girls' school for the elite young ladies, I found Sylvia Dabbs and Carolyn Boles. Many eligible bachelors from A. L. Brown High School still seemed to find this life exciting. Bill Robinette. Gary Deal, Harlen Phillips. and Bobby Mullis were succeeding in cluding the marriage- minded females. In the music world, Don Compton was making a debut in opera, and Hazel O'Kellev had the feminine role opposite him. A large hot-house specializing in rare black orchids was co-owned bv Mazie Cleary and Doris lVliddleton. Each flower section was directed bv such famous flower experts as Vivian Lowder, Geraldine Tarlron. Leah Rae Barker, and Valoree Shinn. Their main busi- ness carrie from Charles MeVVhorter who operated a fashionable florist shop in New York City. Under the big-top, some of the most famous circus performers of all time were making their living in Harold Thompson's Three Ring Circus. Daphne Daniels, Joyce Dendy, Phyllis Rhyne. Betty Sue Pres- son and Maxine Hartsell were billed as top bareback riders. Carolyn Teal and Peggy lVlcDowell teamed up in the lion taming business. Floyd Fritz was watering elephants. Barbara Martin and Betty Carpenter had taught camels to do educational tricks, and Margaret Randolph specialized in a high dive into a tub of water. Leading a safari into the wilds of Africa yvas fear- less Hazel Dancy, Virginia Allen, Ina Ruth Dennis. and Elecia Roberts. They were bringing back animals for Mildred Rollings and Eleanor Foil to mount in their taxidermist shop. Financing the expedition was Shirley Ervin, who had inherited five million dollars. Loraine Strawn recently had a book of poems rub- lishcd bv the Jarrett Publishing Company ownecl bv June Jarrett. Some of the personnel employed by this company were VVillie Sutton, Virginia Waggcmirer, Betty Honeycutt, and Geraldine Holshouser. I saw that Blondie Holbrooks had taken over the radio shop which had been in her family for genera- tions. A boom to this business was the ingenius inven- tions of Doris Chandler Peuuy Beaver, and Jacqueline Caudle. The professional library in New York was managed by Alice Allman with the able assistance of Clatic McLean, Thelma Deal, Eva Mae VVilliams, and Helen Rushing. Two great novels written by Carol Jean Suther and Ruth Roseman were donated to this institution. A women's chorus which was touring the world came into view in the mirror at this time, and l saw that its director was Eleanor Gulledge. A few of the best sopranos were Lorene Helms, Iris Jean Dudley, and Hilda Ruff. Some alto voices included Gloria Howard and Mattie Lou Stancil. Grady Price was the owner of the First National Bank in Chicago. This bank employed Irene Roberts and Edna Stancil as tellers. Then all at once the picture faded and I came back to reality. This was really fine, but l had a iob to do, and the editor was waiting for my feature article on fashion. r ro- PrrvLL1s TnoMPsoN Prophelcss Page Tlzirlv-five Klllllllx l llllll. L. Brown High School, which was at last becoming a reality. The long awaited trip to Washington, D. C., by the United States history classes also became an unbelievable reality. we saw many historical buildings and stopped at the enchanting Luray Caverns on the return trip. This tour proved educational and enjoyable to everyone who went. In May we, the juniors, honored the seniors with a momentous junior-Senior Banquet at the Y.M.C.A. followed by a prom at the school gym. The theme Hitch Your Wagon to a Star was carried out with miniature wagons hitched to glittering stars. Appropriate songs for the occa- sion were sung by little Miss Dannie Brigman. Linny Baker was secretary of the Student Cov- ernment that year. This was also the year in which we won the plaque from Curtis Circulation Company for outstanding accomplishments in selling maga- zines. Our total sales amounted to S1,797.54. Climaxing the year was the receiving of our class rings in May. These we proudly polished and showed OH for the remainder of the year. They were different that year, because of the fact that we would be the first class to graduate from A. L. Brown High School. The last and larger wave starts toward us in an unruly, happy-go-lucky manner. It hardly seemed true that we were now, at last, Dignified Seniorsf' We began the year by electing our class offi- cers. We chose Kenneth Argo to be president, vice-president, Benny Wright, secretary, Ruth Eanes, and treasurer, Bill Bennett. To serve in Council were Carolyn Bost and Charles Efird. Phyllis Thompson became prophet and ,Earl Lentz, our lawyer. At the first of the year, there was the awful grind of senior pictures, club pictures, and many things which had to be done to go into the Senior Edition of the CANNON REPORT. Everyone considered it worth all the trouble, though, when we received our treasured books. Then came the two most outstanding and en- joyable events, the Senior-Junior, and the junior- Senior. Each was a success, and Millicent Rosen- burg, social chairman, Mr. R. D. Boone, Miss Nella Harris, and Mrs. Virginia Alexander did a wonderful job in making plans for the Senior- junior event. Page Thirty-eight There was the excitement of ordering calling cards, invitations, caps and gowns, and diplomas. We could hardly wait for Senior Day so that we could enjoy an outing at one of the nearby lakes. Senior adviser, Miss Loraine Cray, and the many helpful committees aided us in choosing our colors, lavender and silver, our flower, the orchid, class poem, motto, The will to do, the soul to dare , class son , and mascots, Dana Lee- brick and Cynthia jofinson. We dedicated our Yearbook to Miss Rebecca Slate, who had so freely devoted her services to us. ' Linny Baker became president of our Student Government our last year in high school and Buck Cooke was vice-president. The title of Miss Hi Miss,', chosen on the basis of beauty, scholarship, and character, was awarded to Dot Childers, while Carolyn Bost was awarded that of Miss Cannon High. Then the wave rushes toward us with a mighty surge as We remember the breath-taking entering of our new school, A. L. Brown High School. This was a wonderful occasion to which everyone had looked with great anticipation. The school was wonderfull It was as much and more than we had expected. We, the Senior Class, having been the first to graduate from A. L. Brown High School, hope that all classes follow- ing us will have enjoyed it as much as we did. Then, as though the entire Ocean of Mem- ories were pushing it, the mighty wave roars in, splashing its spray upon our faces, and bringing with it the ending of all our high school years- graduation. It was a grand, happy, and sad occa- sion, all wrapped into one. We walked proudly across the new stage of the A. L. Brown High School and marched into our many varied and scattered ways of life, never to relive that night again. But we'll never forget our Alma Mater, A. L. Brown High School, and what it meant to us, and always there'll be a tender place in our hearts for what Cannon High meant to us, too. As we turn to walk on down the Beach of Life, we notice that the outgoing tide is carrying our four precious waves back out into the Ocean of Memories so that we may return to this spot again to relive those four wonderful years.
