Treasurer YEARS HEMEMBEHEU A cap, a gown, and then class night, A smile, a dream that you hold tight. A word of cheer to all who know The lump in your throat that you dare not show. No words nor dreams nor deeds can express The way you feel in a graduation dress. Down the aisle with heads held high Walk you, the seniors, each with a smile. A smile that hides all the fears, A smile which soon may turn to tears, A smile that looks hack on all you've done, A n smile that says, Not finished, just begun. This is your night, the smile seems to say. A night which did seem so far away. This is your night, your dream come true. This is your night, the rest is up to you. You look back, just four years ago- You do not know what the future holds. You can only hope and dream, but now you know IWASCQTS The past is forgotten, the future unfolds. DIANE SLAWSON 'JOYCE TUCKER FLETCHER CRANFQRD, JR. Page Ten ..,...L -., , CL Our class of 1951 will leave the sacred halls of W. Cannon High School as students when our gradua- tion exercises are completed. But our hearts will always remain with our Alma Mater. The pleasant memories of our school days, far from the worldly problems of adulthood, will not be forgotten. Among our fondest memories is the day in September of 1947, when we entered Cannon High to drop our first pebble into the ocean of broader edu- cation. The first ripple made by the pebble revealed much pleasure as we became accustomed to the ways and means of the school that was to be our home for the next four years. Our class adviser, Miss Willie Mae Cowan, and the following officers: Freddy Martin, President, Guy Linker, Vice-President, Floyd Echerd, Secretary, Ray McKinney, Treasurer, and Barbara Rogers and Charles Castor, Representatives to Student Council, helped us get established in this institution for a successful year. Our first class party was in the form of a dance in the school gymnasium. It was a huge success and was enjoyed by all who attended. At the close of the year our principal, Mr. R. Melton, resigned in order to study for his doctor's degree. The second ripple grew larger as we entered our sophomore year. We shed our title of Green Fresh- men, and took our new one of Sophisticated Sopho- omoresf' Sophomores-music to our ears. We figured that we knew just about all there was to know about high school, but we were only beginning to learn. We had our first representative in the Student Government, who was Nancy Shelf, Treasurer of the organization. Our ofiicers elected this year were: Charles Castor, President, Phyllis Freeland, Vice-President, Sara Carpenter, Secretary, Floyd Davis, Treasurer, Betty Collins and Danny Gray, Council Members. Our ad- viser was Miss Elizabeth Graham. Mr. Fred O. Drum- mond came from Mt. Holly to be our new principal. We were very proud when some of our classmates were tapped into the National Honor Society. It is quite an honor for a Sophomore to be chosen as a member of that organization. This year the school band went to the Lion's Club Convention in New York City. We had our annual class party in May. It was a picnic and swimming party at Mirror's Lake. The cool weather didn't keep us from enjoying swimming, play- ing golf, and eating. The third ripple expanded even more and we found ourselves in the Junior Class. In October, at our class meeting, we chose to lead us: Betty Collins, President, Gene McCombs, Vice- President, Zeb Bradford, Secretary, Sara Carpen- EVELYN Ganmss Historian 55 HISTUHY ter, Treasurer, Annie Lou Cook and Zeb Bradford, Council Representatives, and Betty Collins, Social Chairman. We had Miss Nadine Gragg as our ad- viser. In the Student Government, Janice Wood represented us as Secre- 1 tary of the Student Body. This was to be an eventful year for us, as Juniors. We had our first class play, There Go The Grooms, which was directed by Miss Adeline Rogers. Everyone was excited over our first big prom. The Seniors entertained us at Christmas with a Senior-Junior Prom, ' carrying out the theme Holiday Inn. The greatest event of this year was the trip made by the third year his- tory classes to Washington, D. C. We visited the historical buildings in the capital and also the Luray Caverns in Virginia on our return trip. We ordered our long-waited-for class rings and pins and proudly displayed them in April. Climaxing the year was the Junior-Senior Prom, using the mysterious theme, Arabian Nights. Palm trees, Arabian tents, and beautifully colored draperies made it a night of splendor long to be remembered. As the circle grew wider into spheres of greater in- fluence, we were at last Hdignihedn Seniors. Betty Collins, President, Gene McCombs, Vice-Presi- dentg Ramona Self, Secretary, Zeb Bradford, Treasurer, Betty Collins and Danny Gray, Councillors, and Char- lesana Logan, Social Chairman, led us through an exciting and busy year. At a meeting early in the year we elected Janie Kale, Prophet, Evelyn Garriss, His- torian, and Bill Fulcher, Lawyer. There were so many things to be done. Class colors, flowers, superlatives, and mascots were chosen. Our class poem, song, last wills, and activities were written. We had our pictures made and did all that exciting business of ordering calling cards, announcements, caps and gowns, and diplomas. lt was our turn to have Senior Day. We chose maroon and white for our colors, the gardenia for our Hower, and Diane Slawson and Junior Cranford for our mascots. To Mr. Lester McCarn, we dedicated our yearbook. During our twelve years of school, we had looked forward to the time when we could march down the aisle with solemn dignity to the Baccalaureate Sermon, the Class Day Exercises, and across the stage to receive our diplomas. But now that the time had finally arrived, there was a peculiar feeling deep inside us. It hardly seemed true that, after these years of toiling and struggling, we were leaving our Alma Mater. It was hard to realize that we would not be coming back here as students anymore, that we were parting from many of our friends, never to see them again. We had spent a most wonderful four years in high school. Though the last ripple of our high school career had passed, its joys will never fade from our memories. Picture Not Appearing: Doris McCarn Congratulations and Best Wishes CA N N O N CANNON MILLS COMPANY KANNAPOLIS, NORTH CAROLINA, U. S. A. EL 55 PHUPHEEY About two weeks ago I made my debut as a promising ballet dancer with a small troupe in New York City. We had booked several more perform- ances and were traveling by plane. Our next stop was to have been North Carolina, and I was looking forward to seeing some of my friends there. We had plane trouble over Virginia and crashed just outside of Richmond. Suf- fering from a brain concussion, I lapsed into a coma. While I was in this coma, I saw all the members of my graduating class at W. Cannon High School. After completing his course at the Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Ken- tucky, Tommy Hartis had become a great evangelist. Assisting him with the music were Eleanor Foil and Mary Ann Vickers. Nancy Shepherd was a youth leader and Doris Huneycutt was a choir director in a Baptist church. Three of my classmates, Phyllis Safrit, Ann Keziah, and Rebecca Phillips had won international fame as artists, while Nell Pope was a sculptor of modern arts. Floyd Davis and Jo Ann Woolard sketched comic strips for the New York Sunday News. The teaching profession was well represented by the class of '5l. Zeb Bradford was superintendent of city schools in Kannapolis. Grammar school teachers in- cluded Frances Jenkins, Helen Troutman, and Gail Linebarrier. Teaching in high schools were Betty Col- lins, Evelyn Garriss, Janice Wood, Sara Carpenter, and Annie Lou Cook. James Waller was a teacher of mathematics at Davidson College. In the Held of medicine I saw John Blount as a pediatrician, Joyce Tucker as an obstetrician, Nancy Jo Safrit as a psychiatrist, and Darwin McCombs as a brain surgeon. Dressed in nurses' white uniforms were Alice Overcash, Ruby Weddington, Bertie Mae Helms, Jackie McCombs, Camellia Linker, Ellen Wilson, Birma Little, and Margaret Ellen Sechler. Danny Gray, a well-known lawyer, was seeing that justice ruled. Others helping to protect society were Robert Gribble, who was an F.B.I. agent, and Bill Howard and Donald Hinson, who were detectives. Jimmy Lentz and James Brown were chief and assistant chief of police in Kannapolis and Willette Goins was police matron. Checking parking meters in this grow- ing town were Gladvs Nall and Mary Patterson. Ker- mit Goble was a highway patrolman. In the remodeled and enlarged Belk's in Kannapolis, several of my classmates were employed as clerks. Mattie Ann Starnes, Mary Fowler, and Sarah Moss worked in the ladies' ready-to-wear department. Joyce Johnson Page Thirty-two JANIE KALE, Pvophetess , and Gaynell Osborne sold cosmetics and Lorene Bonds sold costume jewelry. Girls who graduated from Cannon High and became secretaries in private offices were Dot Tilley, Betty Brawley, Doris Jean Bange, Judy Allen, and Frances McClamrock. Head telephone operator for Concord Telephone Company was Evelyn Baker. Other girls who chose this occupation were Morene Lunsford, Marlene Oak- ley, Jeri Murph, and Sarah Chastain. J The new S and W Cafeteria in Kannapolis had as its chief dietitian, Faye Petrea. Working in the cafeteria were Betty Cameron and Joann Shankle. Could anyone have imagined that Price Yates would become a taxidermist? Assisting him in the mounting of birds, animals, and fish were Benny Whitley and S. L. Robinette. In an adjoining building was a pet shop jointly owned by Jimmy Rogers and Kenneth Nall. Peggy Robinette, after taking a special course in ethics of personal beauty in New York City, opened her own shop. Her manicurists were Bennie Baucom and Jean Riggs, and giving facials were Peggy Edmis- ton and Bettie Rhyne. The textile industry furnished occupations for a large number of the 1951 graduates. As time keepers in various departments of Cannon Mills I saw Joyce lVlcCollum, Mildred Nliller, and Hazel Snipes. Over- seers for the company included John Shaver, Jr., Jackie Watson, and Ray McKinney. Heading the department of accounting I saw Johnny Nussman. Others employed by Cannon Mills were Helen Grass, Margaret Walker, Barbara Lamb and Jeanette Morgan. Odd and unusual careers were chosen by a number of the male members of my graduating class. Eugene Whittington was a famous magician, Jerry Lee Shinn a ventriloquist, and Frenchie Davis was a trainer of car- rier pigeons. Gilbert Watts was manufacturing a sure cure for baldness. The Raleigh News and Observer carried an inter- esting sports column by Tommy Riggs. He wrote about such outstanding athletes as baseball stars, Charles Lem- ley and Grady Smith. Also mentioned in his columns were football heroes Bobby Julian and Lee Fink, and Floyd Echerd and Jerry Hollar, professional basketball players. Away out in the Lone Star State on a big ranch, I saw Billy Fulcher writing pay checks for his workers. A few of them were Alpheus Ford, Charles Bass, Bobby Menius, Delano Hobbs, and Donald Gurley. Making a fortune with his oil wells was Jimmy Smith. I could tell that the United States would be well prepared if there were another war, when I saw Ray Barbee, L. Brooks, Winfred Bryant, Jimmy Lee, and Joe Cavin in uniforms. Some of the girls in the armed forces were Walterine Slawson, Donnie Phillips, and Daphne Grimes. Donald Blanton and Harvey Sig- mon were pilots for Eastern Airlines, and Mary Adams, Gladys Grass, and Barbara Callicutt were airlines stewardesses. Kannapolis was represented musically by Gwen Peeler, who was touring the world giving violin con- certs. Sally Wagner became an opera singer and Jimmy Coggins was another Frank Sinatra. He had stiff com- petition from Don Michael, an Irish tenor. Serving as director of city school music in Kannapolis was none other than Dale Mills. Leader of an all-girl orchestra was Gayle Lumsden, and the Philharmonic Orchestra claimed Connie Sue Lumsden as a cello soloist. Appearing as a dance band leader was Lowell Daniels. Among the members of the hand were Jimmy Kale, Kenneth Correll, Frank Coon, Jerry Sides, and Gene McCombs. Vocalists with the band were Gurline Compton and Nanette Davis. I was surprised to see that Lena McKinley, Annie Sue Adams, and Wanda Barlow were models for fash- ion magazines. Photographers for some of these maga- zines were Charles Castor and Bobby Bowles. At a large girls' school in Massachusetts, Martha Glosson appeared to be the Dean of Girls. As the door of her office opened, out walked Gail Phillips. her secretary. Teaching physical education at this school were Phyllis Spry, Jimmie Gardner, and Barbara Beam. The next scene carried me back to Kannapolis, where I saw Rex Savage and Harlen Phillips operating a chain of theaters. Some of their managers were Johnny Richardson, Howard Duffell, and James Donahue. Luther Huffman owned a grocery store and Ralph Deal was manager of a furniture store. Priscilla Drolette's bakery served Kannapolis and surrounding towns with its delicious products. Christine Teal, Phvllis Mundav, and Phyllis Freeland were employed by the Charlie Logan shoe store of Charlotte. Bookkeepers for this exclusive shop were Peggy Hall. Betty Jean Jackson, and Jeweldean How- ard. The Rendezvous a hang-out for teen-agers in Charlotte was owned by Lanier McCarty in partner- ship with Keith Hart. Lured by the brilliant lights of a theater on Broad- way my eyes read the names of Mildred Bennett, Betty Stafford, Norma Barnhardt, and Nancy Shelf. I later learned that Jackie Stamev and Barbara Lee had been make-up artist and hair stylist for the performers. Stage manager, Henry Tucker, and sound effects man, Mar- vin Lovette, were also mentioned. Many of my classmates were married and some that were housewives with no careers were Ruby Eagle, Joyce Hinson, Norma Penninger, Carrie Ewan. Maxine Kerley, Arlene King, Nancy Knight and Vera Keamey. City people, fond of their pets, are glad to pay for some animal lover to care for them while they are on vacation. Earning a living as pet caretakers were Colleen Goforth, Billy Jo Mullis, and Joyce Bauknight. Woman's aptitude for home industry turned to a variety of ways to make money. I learned that Jean Peebles was a maker of lamp shades, Nancy Orfield, a rug maker, Betty Wyke made artificial flowers, and Priscilla Teague was a seamstress. Products from these industries were sold throughout the United States. On radio and television I saw and heard Wade Curran as a news commentator, and Joanne Brooks, Jackie Taylor, and Jimmy Donahue as comedians. Many members of my class connected themselves with the Y.M.C.A. After Mr. Fesperman retired, Bill Bullock became the new general secretary, and Francis Melton, assisted by Wayne Robinson was physical di- rector for boys. Chief librarian was Mildred Sherrill, and her assistants were Helen Sloop, Mary Deese, and Mary Ella Cauble. Geraldine Hart became general secretary of women's activities and girls' physical directors were Shirley Stevens and Sonja Youngs. Two autographed books were presented to the Y.M.C.A. in honor of the class of '5l. One was a book of poems by Doris Allen, the other a book by the well- known author, Betty Cloninger. The Daily Independent had as circulation manager, Max Collins while Billy Hardin and Harold Moose were linotype operators. The paper carried a column by Ramona Self, news correspondent in Europe. Seeing that the present facilities for child care of working mothers was inadequate, Ruth Burton presented Mr. Cannon with the facts, and the Cannon Child Wel- fare Center had its beginning. Serving in various capaci- ties of this nursery were Jean Watts, Carol Edwards, Thelma Roseman, Betty Sloop, and Frances Vinson. A large dance school in Atlanta, Georgia, was con- ducted by Sharon Owings and Margaret Newell who specialized in modern dance. Colleen Lentz taught ballet there and Barbara Rogers was an expert teacher of ballroom dancing. Helping to stamp out poverty and ignorance in Europe were Doris Hardister, Zelia Sides, Mary Mc- Whorter, and Helen Brooks as missionaries. Among my classmates who chose social work were: Hilda Pennington, Girl Scout leader, Graydene Ross, Juvenile Court workerg and Lou Jean Pethel, helping with child welfare. Taking the place of the old time truant officer, by keeping children in school. were Betty Campbell and Martha Carter. Supervising a large public playground for children were Lilla Walters, Mary Simmons, and Loretta Vaughn. In a children's clinic I saw Doris McCarn, Eula Mae Wyatt, and Carol VViles giving free medical care. On the outskirts of Kannapolis a large greenhouse was owned by Mildred Wyatt and Evelyn Adcock. Sell- ing their flowers in a florist shop were Arma Wiles, Evelyn Rogers, and Wanda Loftis. I also saw my senior teachers before I awoke from the coma. I was glad to have seen them and my class- mates again even if it were in a coma. I am feeling much better now, and hope to be back on my toes soon.
