Look! it's the freshman class of '47. See how they entered the W. Cannon High School, over 300 strong, looking brave yet a little frightened from so many people. As soon as they became better acquainted with each other they called a class meeting and with the aid of their adviser, Mrs. E. G. Alexander, elected: Shorty Upright, president, Larry Fisher, vice-president: Mar- garet Cruse, secretary, and Charles Parker, treasurer. Their first representatives to student council were Lib Holloway and Johnny Deal. Another freshman who entered with the class was the new principal, Mr. R. Melton. The year was interesting if at times confusing. The scene changes and you see how they looked when they became sophomores. While as freshmen, they were not represented in Student Government with an officer: but when they were ready to become sophomores they elected Joyce McKinley as treasurer of the student body. With the aid of Miss Helen Rudisill, sophomore adviser, they held a very successful class meeting and elected: Buck Riddle, president, Lorna Castor, vice- president, Betty Hudson, secretary, and Lamont Krim- minger, treasurer. Larry Fisher and Peggy Aldridge were the sopho- more council members. Under the coaching of Mr. Lester McCarn and Mr. C. R. Cowan, the baseball team won the Southern Piedmont Conference Championship. There's a scene taken at the class party when the sophomores left school for a half day and went to Mirror Lake by trucks. Not even the cool weather kept them from having a wonderful time swimming, playing golf, and eating. Margaret Cruse was elected to reign as queen of the Harvest Dance. This was quite an honor, having a sophomore win the election. Once more the scenes change and they are one step nearer their goal, for they are now juniors. There is Miss Nadine Gragg, the junior adviser, helping with the election of officers, who were: Luther Corriher, president, Frank Rufty, vice-president: Jean Evans, secretary, and Royal Cadell, treasurer. Butch Dwiggins and Larry Fisher were the council members. Peggy Aldridge was elected as secretary of the Student Government. There is a scene taken at'the Junior-Senior dance. The theme carried out was a Mexican fiesta. H ISTCRY The junior class play, Galahad Jones, starring Royal Cadell, when presented to the public, proved a success. Again the baseball team won the Piedmont Cham- pionship. This year for the first time the third year history classes visited the capital in Washington. They saw all the historical buildings, and returned by New Market, Virginia, to see the famous Endless Caverns. Once more they had someone new, as Mr. F. O. Drummond came as the principal from Mt. Holly High School. Look! The film is now in technicolor, for they have reached the last step. They are now seniors. - Miss Loraine Gray, senior adviser, took charge of the class meeting until they elected James Efird as president. James took charge and the class elected Lib Holloway, vice'president, Jodey Shelf, secretary: and Peggy Aldridge, treasurer. Gene Keever and Jodey Shelf were elected as council members. Hulene Freeze was crowned Cannon High School's Christmas Queen. Frank Rufty was elected as the student body presi- dent and Lamont Krimminger as vice-president. The Senior-Junior was a success for everyone con- cerned. The theme used was Holiday Inn. Again the seniors ruled for a day, punishing all other classmen for their crimes against them. Then came graduation night. For twelve years, or even more, they had looked forward to getting out of school, but now when theutime had finally arrived, the looks on their faces told a different story. An expression of sorrow for having to leave a place where the four most wonderful years of their lives had been spent came over their faces. Suddenly the theater lights are on again and the four years they spent in high school are once more over. PATSY SMITH Historian Page Eleven i M 5 new , , t 41. X .' ENSLEY ELXIILY WILLER Congratulations and Best Wishes TRAZZEQIARK CAN N o N CANNON MILLS CCMPANY KANNAPOLIS, NORTH CAROLINA, U. S. A. lgllfy CLASS PROPHECY You know, it certainly is nice to relax in the solitude of this cozy room with the most wonderful little wife a man could desire and observe the wonders performed daily in this fast changing world. It seems strange in contrast as we turn the huge hands of time back twelve years, when I was one of 231 dignified seniors about to receive my diploma upon completion of twelve unforgettable years in school. In that dark day of political turmoil, international efforts were centered around the harnessing of atomic energy, and now prac- tically everything is afliliated in some means or other with atomic energy. Why, only this afternoon I looked in on my old classmates through the medium of my crystalized, televised, atomized and, of course, com- mercialized crystal ball, and what to my wondering eyes should appear but Johnny Deal, Norris Sherrill, and Luther Corriher still on the gridiron, working beautifully together to score the winning touchdown for the Cleveland Browns. They were ably assisted by Cleveland enthusiasts in the stands, Phyllis Watson, Jean Deal, the former Miss Jean Evans, and Dorothy Meeks, who are famous models in the big city, New York. After the game it was nice to follow the crowd to the most elaborate and exclusive hot spot in New York, which is owned and operated most efficiently by Charles Morgan, Ralph Lloyd, Royal Cadell, Charles Parker, Bob Elliott, and L. M. Ruff. The chief attraction on the entertainment card was the all-star line-up of chorus girls, with Anita Roddie and Lois Freeland stealing the spotlight, while Bill Hailey and Bill Helms are leaders of the Sun Valley Boys. Though hillbilly has really found a spot in the na- tion's top musical category, Bob Allen, Bob Harrington, Tommy Snipes, and Lewis McDowell are still, as we would have said in 1950, NSendin the Cats, with some of the best jazz in all the land. At one of the best tables in the house I noticed Bill Mclnnis, Willie Wellman, Armond Wiles, and Bill Wellman, who, if you remember, were some of the best amateur fighters in the state, and are now fighting professionally in Madison Square Garden. With them were some very interesting personalities in the' forms of Evelyn Shaver, Helen Spencer, and Dot Klutz, who are very talented partners in a beauty salon. ' Turning my crystal ball to Detroit, I was surprised to find!Larry Fisher, James Ehrd, Bob Alexander, and Lamont Krimminger, prominent lawyers, deadlocked in an important case with prosecuting attorney Jimmy Kelly putting up 'a brilliant battle in behalf of the state. On the front row in the huge hall of justice were Paul Sloop, Homer Ruff, Everette Rary, Dan Plyler, and James Sutton, who had good reason to be there, since the verdict would largely affect their pro- Page Thirty-two duction of jetmobiles. Also present and interested in the case was John Stancil, who is sacrificing riches to be a servant to humanity as a country doctor. Doycc Freeze, owner of the jetmobile Hell Drivers, was there, too, for he has quite a bit at stake in the all-important case which could mean much towards the employment of thousands involved. Thomas Dendy, Glenn Over- cash, Bobby Fox, Everette Link, Ronald King, and Monroe Seamon are several concerned, since they are leading drivers in the death-defying act. Traveling with the act are Anne Blackwelder, Ruth Brown, Frances Woodard, Pat Keever, Dorothy Holshouser, and Joyce Weaver, who supply the entertainment at inter- mission. In my scan of the country it was interesting to note those of our class who chose more conservative careers in their pursuit of happiness, such as Betty Mauldin, Saleeta Sasser, Evelyn Goble, Marguerite Cashion, Donese Morris, and Joan Riddle, who are housewives to husbands in the medical world. Their husbands, incidentally, are business associates of Alton Finger, Charles Carter, Bill Crider, Louis McCombs, Harry Puckett, and Wayne Petrea, who are also practicing in the world of medicine. Though the World seems to be established now with lasting peace, Wade Rollins, Billy Joe Coble, Leon and Floyd Ensley, Gene Lisk, and Walter Milam are carving their futures in Uncle Sam's armed forces along with some of the supposedly weaker sex, which includes Merlee Daniels, Eva Hardy, Bobbie Jean Hilburn, Butch Dwiggins, Rhumel Wiles, and Mabel Patterson. Assisting those in the armed forces are Su- zanne Drummond, Mary Lib Holloway, Buford Widen- house, Herbert Hampton, and Donald Harris, who are connected with the nation's top military intelli- gence, which combats theories that militantly deny the validity of our principles. The reception of my crystal ball was exceptionally good when it focused Millie Brown designing homes on the West Coast, and being ably assisted by Susie Wright, Betty Hudson, Charlotte Edwards, Betty Clam- pet, and Lorna Castor, who if you remember displayed originality in decorating our school gymnasium for dances. The homes being designed, by the way, were built by the Gene Keever Construction Corporation, which employs R. Troutman, Ray Waller, Bobby Huffman, Bill Foutz, Boyce Godfrey, Bobby Cook, and scores of others. America's favorite pastime, the movie, is being threatened by a perfected television which claims such talented performers as Doris Brooks, Joyce Allen, Bar- bara Mills, Marie Belk, Carolyn Reynolds, Pauline Sasser, Betty Shinn, and Millie Lunsford, while the production of television shows is mastered by Bill Wil- liams, Hayes Hatley, Randolph Martin, Robert Eddle- man, Max Adams, and James Christenbury. Something very publicly known without the aid of a crystal ball is the amazing accomplishments of mis- sionaries Virginia Elliott, Peggy Aldridge, Mary Ann Helms, Katherine Moss, Mary Eller, and Alice Gamble. Making known their efforts are Mary Carter, Patsy Smith, Gwyn Keever, Billie Baucom, Helen Sasser, Willie Lee Little, and Io Ann Brooks, who are journal- ists on some of the country's biggest papers. Fletcher Robbins is editor of the New York Times, while Dacil Furr, -lack Adams, and Walter Boggs are in the sports department writing about such great athletes as Buck Riddle, Fred Christy, Buster Barrett, Marshall Moss, and Bob Waller. My crystal ball was really clear when it came across Norma jane Tutterrow, the dancing sensation of Broad- way, who shares honors in this field with Katherine Bradley, Leona Howard, loann Smith, Betty Ross Teal, Lois Nall, Joan Hager, Peggy Hill, and Ruby Dabbs. Frankie Mann and Ruby Ledbetter have people laugh- ing from coast to coast with their jokes, now that vaudeville is back. ChieHy responsible for bringing vaudeville back are Herman Wyatt, T. Yates, Louis Patterson, Donald McDaniel, Charles Beaver, Donald Hall, and 'flimbol' Bennett, owners of theaters that specialize in shows taking place in the Gay Ninetiesf' Indeed it is a great day with television, vaudeville, movies. Speaking of movies reminds me of what a wonderful success lovely Hulene Freeze is in the picture Tomorrow Never Comes, which was produced by jerry Honeycutt and directed by Marlin Mull. The hair styling was under careful supervision of Wilene Ferguson and the costuming was done by Carrie Ann Funderburke. Other members of the cast include Betty .lo Anderson, Margaret Cruse, Annie Belle Bassinger, Daphne Honeycutt, Dawn McClendon, Iodey Shelf, Marvin King, John Deyton, and Harvey Baxter. The production is based on the novel written by Mary Ann Bullock, which was published by the Harold Price publishing agency and acclaimed as having all the qualities of greatness by critics Dallas Harper, Charles Holshouser, Peggy Christy, Mary Jolley, and Rosa Marie Mills. We can't forget too that the newly devised color scheme in the movie industry was conceived and perfected by classmates Ronnie Brooks, Charles Over- cash, Charles Richardson, and Raymond Bailey. Yes, it's a strange world with the comforts of modern living in this push button era that has Glenn Cook, Andy Patterson, .lack Reese, Monroe Morgan, and Frank McDuflie working on the idea of a button that pushes the button. Yet, perhaps the greatest invention or discovery of this age is still in progress, with Donald Phillips, Marie Kincaid, Ruth Brackett, Barbara Crisco, and Marion Davis perfecting the serum to cure cancer and several other dreaded diseases. .-All-f H Quite a number of our old classmates stood brightly in my crystal ball in white uniforms, making their contribution to humanity as nurses. These include Betty Branch, Frances Cavin, Nancy Cooke, Edna Gulledge, Rosinell Hatley, Faye Nell Rodgers, Margie Roscoe, Mildred Wagoner, Betty Brewer, and Novella Myers. The teaching profession, offering advantages both socially and financially, has attracted many of our classmates, and it was nice to see Charlotte Collins, Connie Dwiggins, Patsy Gibson, Louise Grillin, Betty Ruth McNeil, Virginia Roberts, and Mary Bell Sechler still in school but on the issuing end. Nice, too, that they could teach at Cannon High, which still is, as it was years ago, one of the largest and most highly accredited schools in the South, musically, athletically and otherwise. Instructors in the physical education department are Bessie Howell, Ramona King, Raumell Corbett, and Betty Entrekin, who are doing a wonderful job. While my crystal ball was centered in Kannapolis, one of the most active spots in town appeared to be a dress show owned, managed, and operated by Nancy Jackson, Faye Miller, Maggieleen Nesbitt, Ieraldine Pethel, Faye Smith, and Lujean Sweatt, while the business establishment next door was stocked with music and instruments that supplied a booming business for Nancy Harmon, Marie Whitaker, Joan Widen- house, Rachel Vickery, June Suther, and Aubra Ann Fisher. Also in business in the Towel Center of the world are Gonzalee Misenheimer and Earl Litaker, who have an auto repair shop that works wonders in cooperation with women cab drivers Margalene Hager, Elsie Taylor, Annelle Teate, Helen Wall, and Joann Wells. Yes, it certainly is nice to relax with such an under- standing wife and observe the wonders performed daily in this fast changing world, which can't change for anything but the best with such great teams as the 1950 graduating class of Cannon High School taking the lead in worldly developments. .fy ULMONT UPRIGHT, Prophet Page Thirty-three Q Best Looking CHARLES PARKER IIULENE FREEZE Most Talented BOBBY ALLEN ANITA RODDIF 05 ef Y Q ,U 59945 KN.. , Friendliest Best Persmmlity .Host fjU'cJ1JCl'f1ffl'L' YIODEY SHELF -IODEY Smauf AIILLIE BROVVN LARRY FISHER LARRY FISHER LARRY FISHER .Host Sfndiom U'ittiesf AIARY ANN HELBIS CHARLES AIUHGAN IOIIN S'rANc:1L EVA HARDY Most Digvzificd LAMONT KR1MM1NL:ER AIARY ANN I'lIiI,lN'1S ' SENIOIR .Host Populm' l4U'I'IlEll CORRIIIER ANITA RODDIIJ, ad .Host Capable M051 Original Most Likely to Succeed Luz IIOLLAVVAY HSIIOHTYU U1-RIGHT IXIARY AANN Hamas LARRY FISHER AIILLIE BROVVN FRANK RUFTY SUPERLATIVES Best All-Amuml Hes!
