'W-nr - OUR ENTRANCE-OUR EXIT CLASS HISTORY-1948 All the worltl's a stage, And all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts. -Simicusveann Perhaps in the annals of Cannon Iligh's existence there has not been a more eventful history than that of the Class of 1948. XVe have finished the course. XVQ, the Seniors, may now make this statement. VVe have run our nlarathon, and in graduating, shall leave this beloved school where many happy hours were spent in friendly companionship. ln our hearts will remain only memories, pleasant memories, memories of days gone by-days when our lives were gay and far, far away from worldly problems of maturity. 'Twas in one of those days of long ago, a month of autumn. The leaves on the trees were slowly turning a golden brown as the faint rays of the sun played all about them, seeming to invest them with a glimmer of the summer past. VVe trudged to school that day, an army of 343 boys and girls. Then, the class was considered the largest to enroll in Cannon High. That dav the school presented an awe-inspiring spectacle, wrapned in a halo of gold, with maiestic columns proieeting skyward. This was to be our home for the next four years. KINESON JUNG Historian Bewildered, we nevertheless carried ourselves very proudly through its sacred halls, and, except for an occasional mishap, our fascination that first dav in this institution made us look forward to the four years in which we were to leave our footprints imbedded firmly upon its history. l Green freshmen we were, who needed careful guidance. With Miss Edna Brown as our adviser and the following officers: Thelma Angel, President, Kineson Iung, Vice-President, Gladys Oates, Secretary, Iris Harrington, Treasurerg our beginning in this institution was not without notice. The big event of the year for us was our Freshman Class Party. During our first and second years, Iohn L. Dupree, honored and esteemed, was our principal. VVe owe much of our classls success to him. Delightedly we saw vacation come that summer and with the beginning of our second year, we were considered Sophomores. Sophomores-the delightful ring of the word! Now we could really say we were a Dart of high school, and carry a great deal more prestige in this, our school. We were not lost now. Cannon High was home. Our officers elected this year were: Tommy Leebrick, President, James Shuping, Vice-Presidentg Faye Howard, Secretary, Jack Cooke, Treasurer. For' adviser we had Mrs. Thurman Frye. Sam Scott this year represented our class as Treasurer of the Student Government organization. This was to be an eventful year. The last bond drive was held, marking the end of war. The basketball team won the Southern Piedmont Championship and the Northwestem Championship. A sad climax came with the resignation of john L. Dupree, who had served as principal for the past seven years. He was succeeded by Mr. J. R. Blelton. Then fall came and school began again. VVe Iuniors experienced our first taste of a nation at peace in many years. Officers chosen this year were: Al McDonald, Presidentg Betty Chloe McCombs, Vice-Presidentg Kineson Jung, Secretaryg Rav Fryer, Treasurer. Our loyal adviser was Nlrs. Dorothy Robbins. In Student Government we had Gladys Oates as Secretary of the Student Body. Throughout the year event crowded upon event, and we were busy and happy. The basketball team won the Queen City Championship. Admiral Bull Halsey paid us a visit. Our school was host to the North Carolina State Honor Society Convention. Thelma Angell was elected state president for the coming year. We gave our Hrst class play HA Date With IudV directed bv Miss Nellie Alexanderg and climaxed that year with the junior-Senior Prom which carried out in multitudinous colors the Mardi-Gras theme. We were thrilled over its success and proud of our class. Our numbers had now decreased a bit, but we were still over 200 strong. VVith the commencement of the Class of '47, where thirteen of our number were marshals, we became officially the Seniors of the school. Now we could wear rings and pins denoting our class, occupy the coveted center front seats in thc auditorium, and lead the recession at every assembly. VVe at last were the dignified and highly honored Seniors. This year two of our members held the highest places in the Student Government, Jay VVise was President and Kineson Jung, Vice-President. Fred Childers, President: Charles Rahb, Vice-President, Iris Harrington, Secretary, and Marilyn Parker. Treasurer, led us through a busy and exciting year. Miss Loraine Gray was our adviser, and to her we dedicated our annual. All the exciting business of choosing mascots, Howers, colors, song, and poem lay ahead of us. There were superlatives to elect, scholarship contestants to choose, Last Wills, Histories, activities to write, calling cards and invitations to order. It was such fun being a Senior! It was our turn to take the day off to observe Senior Day, our turn to be entertained at the Junior-Senior Prom, our turn to give the Senior play, which was directed by Miss Loraine Gray, our turn to wear caps and gowns and march in solemn dignity to the Baccalaureate Sermon, the Class Day Exercises and finally-oh long awaited night-across thc stage to receive our diplomas. We chose Blue and VVhitc for our colors, the Rose for our flower, and Harriet Maulden and Michael Starnes for our mascots. A most wonderful year it has been ruling as lords over Cannon High. Graduating, we bid a fond adieu, to friends and teachers, whom we love, and as we graduate we know that we shall never forget our Alma Mater. Somewhere within we swear allegiance to this our school and go out into a larger and harder school determined to carry with us those ideals which Cannon High has sought to instill in this class of 1947 and 1948. Respectfully submitted, KINESCBN IUNG, Class Historian Page Three . 1
