CANNON HIGH SCHOOL MOTTO: To strive, to seek, to find, but not to yielclf, Page Thr UEUIC TIU MR. JOHN L. DUPREE N0 attempt to review the progress of Cannon High School would he coniplete without an effort to pay trihute to JOHN L. DUPREE. Iinloued with an innate sense of justice and iinpartiality, he hecarne to us a genial coinpanion, the epitome of what we would want our lives to he. Because of his intangihle spirit of friendliness, his willingness to serve, and his untiring efforts in the expansion of the school, we, the senior class of the ll. VV. Cannon High School, with deepest appreciation and gratitude do herehy dedicate this 1947 CANNON REPORT. Pa ge Four HISTORY UF SE IDR ELASS '47 In the year of our Lord, nineteen hundred and forty-three, three hundred twenty- nine tired and bewildered students, who had only three months before finished eight long years of elementary school, entered the doors of a higher and more advanced institution of learning. This institution was called W. Cannon High School. We students, the first in tfie city of Kannapolis to have completed eight years of elementary school instead of the original seven, little realized that we could learn to love a school so much. When registration, room assignments, and other adjustments were made, we became full fledged freshmen, on the lowest rung on the ladder of high school. We felt lost and thought everything we did was wrong, but we were soon comforted by our teachers and welcomed by the u Jper-classmen. Soon we elected our class ofhcers, who were to guide and direct us through the year. As officers we elected, Kenneth Dayvault, president, james Carroll, vice-president, Marietta Simms, secretary and treasurer. With these leaders to guide us, that Hrst year of high school went along much better than we expected. Our studies were hard, but there was plenty of recreation to go along with our lessons. There were football games, basketball games, plays, and especially the wellfliked Student Government dances. Before we knew it, a whole year had passed, summer vacation was over, and we were back in high school once more. We were no longer freshmen, but sophomores. How good this word sounded, it was music in our ears. As sophomores we again elected our staff of officers. They were: president, Max Koontz, vice-president, Bay Frye, secretary, Phyllis Tucker, and treasurer, Hazel Boggs. This, our second year of high school, went along even smoother than the first. We seemed to enjoy our extra- curricular activities more, and even our studies seemed more enjoyable. We now began to sense our love for the school that, in only two more years was to be our Alma Mater. After completing two years of required work, we could now call ourselves juniors. This, our junior year, was to be a most promising and enlightening one. As upper- classmen, we enjoyed privileges that were unknown to us before. Our junior class play, Hjanief' directed by Miss Amy Harrington, made a big hit with everyone. Our annual Junior-Senior prom, honoring the seniors, was a most joyous festivity, enjoyed by all attending. We were also privileged to attend the Senior Barn-warmingli held in late spring. Our junior year was guided by our class officers who were: owell Lovin, preside-nt, Bill Messer, vice-president, Anna Carter, secretary, and jimmy Fisher, treasurer. This was our third year and our best one so far but little did we realize what was yet in store for us. We finally reached it: our senior year. We had reached the top rung of the ladder. But we were just a little more than ordinarv seniors. We were the first class of Cannon High School to have been required to complete twelve years of school before graduating. As all seniors though, we retained our senior dignity and pride. Our officers were: president, james Roberts, vice-president, Earl Clayton, secretary, Anna Carter, and treasurer, George Daniels. This year we had work to do. We elected our superlatives, chose as our colors, blue and white, and the gardenia as our flower. We had to get everything just perfect for graduation. Aside from hard work though, we had our entertainment. There was the Senior-junior dance, the Senior class play, Senior day, on which day the seniors are lord and ruler over the under-classmen, and in the spring there was the junior-Senior prom. Last but most important of all festivities was commencement. ln the first days of june, 1947, we became graduates of W. Cannon lligh School. Now graduation is over and we have bid a fond farewell to all our teachers, friends, and especially our school. We have reached the top rung of the ladder of high school, but we have just begun to climb the ladder of life, and as we climb this ladder, we will never forget Cannon High. VVe will always love her, not as a building, but as the maker of four of the most enjoyable years of our lives. Vorcr W. BEAVER, Historian Page Five 1 l .MJ ANN N UPIT JAY WISE ........... ..... Our Alumni Day had been set for the first week in June. I could hardly waitg I was so excited. Ten years had passed since that fateful graduation and I had lost track of all those members of my graduating class. My mind began to scurry back and forth. I wondered what this person or that person was now doing. We had received our diplomas with a sense of grown-upness, so confident that we would go far as the leaders of our nation. How many of our dreams were fulfilled? The day came and I almost jumped up and down with excite- ment as I prepared to leave my temporary office in Birmingham, Alabama.
