SENIOR CLASS POEM ’44 We may let our minds go wandering back To the day we used the key To open the door into high school land, Which we entered with the highest glee. We chose the fields in which we’d work Only to hear this demand: In English you ' ll work f or four long years If a diploma you ' d hold in your hand. In English we learned I ain ' t ain ' t right. And we learned to punctuate: We memorized lines from Shakespeare’s plays And wondered what might be our fate. We have filled our minds with dates of wars And with facts about famous men: We’ve learned all about the laws of our land As we’ll never learn them again. Some in the lab tried experiments, When chemistry we would choose, We made sweet-smelling fumes fill the air And fancy holes in our shoes. Others succeeded in climbing the scales, Singing, in tones high and low, Songs of religion and songs of love — Some fast and some of them slow. We figured out strange problems in Math. Which we knew we would not use soon: But it’s nice to know how long it would take For the cow to jump over the moon. Hoping to get a snack between meals The home ec. tried a cookie to bake But after the taste and the bowl got their toll There was none to the oven to take. Our students in Spanish say a te quiero, Those take French, J aime vous ; But the rest of us like our English so well That we say I love you. And now that these days are past and gone We may look back with great pride On this our school. Dear K. H. S., In our hearts you’ll ever abide. ROSALII4D BODIE. Page Six

HISTORY OF SENIOR CLASS ’44 Little did we as puzzled, perplexed, and bewildered freshmen realize that in four more or less delightful years we would be graduating into a world filled with the chaos of war. The fact has prevented many of our former classmates from being with us this year. Here, may we pause to remember those who are now in the uniform of our country serving on the battlefronts of the world. On a September day four years ago we entered the sacred halls of Cannon High. Frightened as we were, we soon became accustomed to the routine of high school. Our first task after adjustments were made was to select our officers. These were Margaret Fisher, president; Bobby Phillips, vice-president; Hazel Roberts, secretary: Betty Sue Crenshaw, treasurer. As freshman advisers ready and able to help us in any way we had Misses Emma Burns, Peggy Columbus, Mable Livingston. Crystal Henderson, Mrs. Fred Dennis, Messrs. Norman Miller, Harry Sanders, and Lester McCarn with Mr. Dupree as principal. Under their capable direction the year passed smoothly. Soon one year of high school had gone. Then, after a brief respite from school, we again entered Cannon High, this time as sophomores. Again we had the privilege of electing officers. This year we had Hazel Roberts as president, with Leonard Bassinger, vice-president, Earl Critz, secretary, and Jesse Thomason, treasurer. As advisers we had Misses Dorothy Aycock, Crystal Henderson, Grace Frazier, Ruth McKeithan, Edith Reid, and Mrs. Harry Jackson. Ever ready to aid was Mr. J. L. Dupree, principal. Two years had passed, and now we were members of the Junior class. Thus with thoughts of the important year ahead we elected as officers: Genevieve Parks, president; Hazel Roberts, secretary, and Evelyn Oates, treasurer. Our advisers this year were Misses Thelma Callahan, Grace Frazier. Jams Viser, Mesdames W. G. Coleman, Thurman Frye, W. B. Heyward, and Mr. Charles P. Turner. This year was a most important one. For the first time we attended the Senior-Junior Prom which was one of the highlights of the year. Later the Junior Class Play Don ' t Take My Penny, directed by Mrs. W. B. Heyward, was presented. Then in the closing days of our Junior year came the Junior- Senior Dance. For us, this, our junior year, had been a most enjoyable one. In the autumn of 1943 we, the Seniors, thinking ahead, elected as our leaders: Bobby Phillips, president; Gratton Mann, vice-president; Betty Jane Compton, secretary; and Earl Critz, treasurer. More cherished this year than others are our advisers, who are Misses Thelma Callahan, Loraine Gray, Amy Harrington, Vera Jean Kearney. Sue Ratchford and Helen Wofford. Mr. J. L. Dupree, as always, has been ready to aid us. Our last year is passing swiftly. This year for the first time our Senior-Junior Prom was a masquerade which was enjoyed by everyone. Next there was our Senior Class Play, Pride and Prejudice, directed by Miss Amy Riser Harring- ton. Then Senior Day, Junior-Senior Dance and other activities ever climaxed by commencement. In the first days of the month of June we became graduates of J. W. Cannon High School. Now graduation is over and fond farewells to high school have been said. May we, the Seniors of Cannon High School, ever look forward with the same true spirit which has carried us through four years of academic training. Mary Evelyn Childers. Page Five
