Dupree, Principal of Cannon High School, because of his momentous efforts in the expansion of Can- non High School to the high position it now occupies ; because his first thought has always been of others — be it the lowliest freshman or the highest senior; because where duty stops, he has continued beyond unselfishly and sym- pathetically; because of the esteem in which he is held by those who know and work with him, and because he has carved a place in our hearts which time cannot erase — we, the seniors of Cannon High School are proud to dedicate this 1944 yearbook. Page Four HISTORY OF SENIOR CLASS ’44 Little did we as puzzled, perplexed, and bewildered freshmen realize that in four more or less delightful years we would be graduating into a world filled with the chaos of war. The fact has prevented many of our former classmates from being with us this year. Here, may we pause to remember those who are now in the uniform of our country serving on the battlefronts of the world. On a September day four years ago we entered the sacred halls of Cannon High. Frightened as we were, we soon became accustomed to the routine of high school. Our first task after adjustments were made was to select our officers. These were Margaret Fisher, president; Bobby Phillips, vice-president; Hazel Roberts, secretary: Betty Sue Crenshaw, treasurer. As freshman advisers ready and able to help us in any way we had Misses Emma Burns, Peggy Columbus, Mable Livingston. Crystal Henderson, Mrs. Fred Dennis, Messrs. Norman Miller, Harry Sanders, and Lester McCarn with Mr. Dupree as principal. Under their capable direction the year passed smoothly. Soon one year of high school had gone. Then, after a brief respite from school, we again entered Cannon High, this time as sophomores. Again we had the privilege of electing officers. This year we had Hazel Roberts as president, with Leonard Bassinger, vice-president, Earl Critz, secretary, and Jesse Thomason, treasurer. As advisers we had Misses Dorothy Aycock, Crystal Henderson, Grace Frazier, Ruth McKeithan, Edith Reid, and Mrs. Harry Jackson. Ever ready to aid was Mr. J. L. Dupree, principal. Two years had passed, and now we were members of the Junior class. Thus with thoughts of the important year ahead we elected as officers: Genevieve Parks, president; Hazel Roberts, secretary, and Evelyn Oates, treasurer. Our advisers this year were Misses Thelma Callahan, Grace Frazier. Jams Viser, Mesdames W. G. Coleman, Thurman Frye, W. B. Heyward, and Mr. Charles P. Turner. This year was a most important one. For the first time we attended the Senior-Junior Prom which was one of the highlights of the year. Later the Junior Class Play Don ' t Take My Penny, directed by Mrs. W. B. Heyward, was presented. Then in the closing days of our Junior year came the Junior- Senior Dance. For us, this, our junior year, had been a most enjoyable one. In the autumn of 1943 we, the Seniors, thinking ahead, elected as our leaders: Bobby Phillips, president; Gratton Mann, vice-president; Betty Jane Compton, secretary; and Earl Critz, treasurer. More cherished this year than others are our advisers, who are Misses Thelma Callahan, Loraine Gray, Amy Harrington, Vera Jean Kearney. Sue Ratchford and Helen Wofford. Mr. J. L. Dupree, as always, has been ready to aid us. Our last year is passing swiftly. This year for the first time our Senior-Junior Prom was a masquerade which was enjoyed by everyone. Next there was our Senior Class Play, Pride and Prejudice, directed by Miss Amy Riser Harring- ton. Then Senior Day, Junior-Senior Dance and other activities ever climaxed by commencement. In the first days of the month of June we became graduates of J. W. Cannon High School. Now graduation is over and fond farewells to high school have been said. May we, the Seniors of Cannon High School, ever look forward with the same true spirit which has carried us through four years of academic training. Mary Evelyn Childers. Page Five SENIOR CLASS POEM ’44 We may let our minds go wandering back To the day we used the key To open the door into high school land, Which we entered with the highest glee. We chose the fields in which we’d work Only to hear this demand: In English you ' ll work f or four long years If a diploma you ' d hold in your hand. In English we learned I ain ' t ain ' t right. And we learned to punctuate: We memorized lines from Shakespeare’s plays And wondered what might be our fate. We have filled our minds with dates of wars And with facts about famous men: We’ve learned all about the laws of our land As we’ll never learn them again. Some in the lab tried experiments, When chemistry we would choose, We made sweet-smelling fumes fill the air And fancy holes in our shoes. Others succeeded in climbing the scales, Singing, in tones high and low, Songs of religion and songs of love — Some fast and some of them slow. We figured out strange problems in Math. Which we knew we would not use soon: But it’s nice to know how long it would take For the cow to jump over the moon. Hoping to get a snack between meals The home ec. tried a cookie to bake But after the taste and the bowl got their toll There was none to the oven to take. Our students in Spanish say a te quiero, Those take French, J aime vous ; But the rest of us like our English so well That we say I love you. And now that these days are past and gone We may look back with great pride On this our school. Dear K. H. S., In our hearts you’ll ever abide. ROSALII4D BODIE. SENIOR CLASS SONG ’44 TUNE: Farewell to I hce Queen Liliuokalani Now we spread our sails out full at last, The sails, on which we’ve worked four years. Day by day the threads we ' ve woven in: Side by side we have woven them with care. Chorus: We spread our sails, Tho’ loath to leave The school that we have learned to love so well: But we must sail across life ' s wide, blue sea — So, Cannon High, farewell! It is time for us to put to sea, The hour is drawing very near. There ' ll be storms and winds to break the calm, But with sturdy sails we should have no fear. Soon our fleet will have to break apart And each must sail on his own way. It is true that some will meet again, But our fleet will not meet another day. I was reading a magazine called The Traveler, a travelers’ guide, when I happened to notice that Conley Graham, one of my classmates, class of ' 44, was editor and publisher. Seeing the name of my classmate took my thoughts back to my last year in Cannon High. Then I realized that tonight, ten years ago to the exact day, my class had graduated, each member now pursuing his chosen profession. Suddenly, an elderly man, sitting beside me, tapped my shoulder and began telling me all about what my classmates were doing. I had never seen the man before nor did I understand how he knew all of this, but here ' s what he told me. Zella Foster Lunsford, Jan ice Lylerly Greene, Hilda Peninger Goodman, and Rebecca Towell McCombs, who were married before we graduated, have set up housekeeping since their husbands have come home from military service. To the field of medicine the class of ' 44 gave some very outstanding men and women. Dr. Freeman Slaughter and Dr. James Jung are widely known practicing physicians, while Dr. Bar- bara Bogan is considered one of the greatest brain surgeons in the world. Those who received training as Cadet Nurses and are now capably serving in various hospitals are Virginia Beck, Frankie Chandler. Christine Foil, Edith Honeycutt, and Jennie Bell. As a life saver for such math teachers as Margaret Brooks, Zeb Cashion. and Ruth Avant, the J. O. Dayvault, Jr., Slide Rule Manufacturers have developed very easy operating and very accurate slide rules for all math students. Lawrence Ray Berry, noted lecturer and world traveler, has been touring the country with his manager, Harry Davis. Newmoon Jung is now quite a well-known photographer who takes pictures of models such as Hazel Roberts, Virginia Blackwelder, and Betty Sue Crenshaw. Secretaries who graduated from Cannon High and who are now employed in some of the largest concerns in America are Betty Jane Sossoman, Betty Sue Shinn, and Imogene Shepherd. Some of the new coiffures the women are wearing are creations which Thelma Walls, Alice Reece, or Estelle Poole have originated. Rubie Mae Oliver now operates a dress shop of her own. Eva Mae Pethel and Betty Jean Mullis design the dresses, while Clarice Morris and Suella Myers make and fit them. Even though both are married, Anna Harmon and Betty Hartis are columnists for newspapers. Mary Evelyn Childers, Cora Lee Chambers, and Eudene Hoke are home economic experts, testing the products of Allen Beam’s Cereal Company. Leroy Dwiggins now has a Super-Dooper-Super Store, selling groceries with the help of Harry Freeze, Harold Haithcock, and Johnny Linker. Aircraft manufacturing has been put on a large scale by makers such as Lawson Biles, Earl Critz, and James Yates. Dorothy Kluttz is editing a revised system of shorthand. Recently promoted to the position of head telephone operator in New York City is Maggie Lee Perkins. Employed there also are two of her classmates. Helen Powell, and Verna Mae Pethel. Betty Miller and Carol Fritts are doing work in religious education. Don Currie and Charles Holbrooks have Boy Scout Troops. Susie Whittington and Beatrice Parker have opened an orphanage. Anita Morris and Catherine Oliver assist them in keeping the children out of mischief. L. V. Lue McRorie, Ramelle Callicutt, and Helen Cartner coach basketball and softball at various schools. Elva Hipps and Eulaila Conner are welders at the new Leonard Alexander Auto Corporation. Operating various theaters throughout the United States with Robert Foi, James Gurley, and Ray Dwiggins. is Frank Goodnight. Girls selling tickets at some of these theaters are Annie Lou Ballard. Katherine Brown, and Louise Barrett. Successful lawyers who graduated in the class of ' 44 are Leonard Bassinger, Max Cooke, and Ned Lowder. Dorothy Gibson is superintendent of a school for airline hostesses. Now on active duty as hostesses are Helen Cline. Doris Cobb, and Betty Compton. Max Christy and Wallace Bennett have quite a spacious ranch out west and raise some of the cattle of the world. Even though the war is over, Bobby Phillips, Billy Avant. and Tom Teal have remained in the Army. All have commissions and are training men. Sam Shaver, Elmer Poole, and Neil Robinson have modern farms equipped with all the modern implements in use. In the great field of social work are Rosalind Bodie, Louise Bost, and Geraldine Braswell who have exerted a great influence for better living conditions. Pets are in such demand today that Jocelyn Godfrey, Claudine Griffin, and Marie Helms have opened Ye Olde Pet Shoppe.” Mary Frances Goodman, Janice Irby, and Myrtle Ketner are women dentists who have excelled in this work. Alfred Hardin, Earl Funderburke, Earl Cook, and J. C. Daugbtery are carpenters and con- tractors. The Hot Spot, Chicago ' s favorite night club, is owned by L. D. Whitley and Robert Powell and operated by Clara Mae Carter. Jeanette Cauble is head waitress, and entertainment is furnished by the dancing team, Betty Farabee and Kenny Overcash. Felix McConnell and James Overcash are transcontinental bus drivers. Albert Parham, Everett Simpson, and Paul Robinson are policemen in Kannapolis. The Collier sisters, Margaret and Sarah, are seamstresses who have such a large business that PROPHECY Margaret Goldston and Betty Jean Goodwin are employed full time by them. Serving as one of his most valuable assistants is James Starnes. Mary Dellinger and Marion Suggs have recently caused quite a sensation in the movies. For some of the greatest engineering feats of this post-war world, we have to thank Ed Shinn, Jesse Thomas, and Marvin Sides. Washington ' s two greatest politicians, Senator Jimmy Widenhouse and Senator Flarry Wright, have been very hotly debating our international problems. Found in the field of professional sports are Floyd Wilson, Harold Whitaker, and Fred Helms, all of whom got their start playing on K. H. S. teams. Delmar Wiles now has an illustrated magazine of his own. Harold Bonds and Mary Catherine Nash are furnishing the literary part for this publication. As relations between South America and the United State have improved greatly since the war, there has been a need for Spanish interpreters. Employed for this are Genevieve Parks, Marcell Milloway, and Gilda Corbin. Librarians wh o are now holding very high positions in this field are Dorothy Deal, Aileen Black, Margie Lee Dancy, and Mittie Lou Utley. Cannon High has employed several of its former students as music instructors. Betty Turner and Mildred Payne teach orchestra and band, respectively, while Dot Cooke and Billy Cline are taking care of the vocal instruction. Kate Smith has now retired and taking her place is Martha Hartness, often called Kate Smith. II. Furnishing music for Martha ' s radio program is Walter Bost and his orchestra.
