DEDICATION Never before in the history of J . W. Cannon High School have we sent to the battlefield students and faculty members of our school. Since the beginning of this World War . some of them have been reported missing, some prisoners of war. some wounded, and some deceased. SENIOR CLASS HISTORY By Glenn Elizabeth Tucker The past rises dimly before me like a dream. The class of 43 is once more beginning its struggle in a new world known as “high school. The vision becomes clearer and I see a September day in 1939. Three hundred and ninety-four bewildered “Freshmen are entering high school. They are very timid and shy in the presence of upper-classmen. Mrs. Fred Dennis, Misses Crystal Henderson, Frances Sowell, Mildred Hutchinson, and Messrs. Edward Russell, Donald Dunlop, Harry Sanders, Lester McCarn, and Norman Miller and also the principal. Mr. John L. Dupree, are ready to instruct and aid them in every way. Their first duty is to elect their class officers: Charles Misenheimer, Presi- dent: Margaret Helms, Vice-President: Elsie V. Daves, Secretary; and Annie Ruth Brinkley, Treasurer. The vision rapidly passes to the Sophomore year. The struggle has been hard, and there are only two hundred and seventy-fiv e left from the original class. The teachers this year are Mrs. Robert Mooring, Mrs. J. D. Taylor, Misses Nellie Alexander. Flora Gilchrist, and Messrs. Daniel Hoyle, and Duron Beeler. Being Sophomores makes the work easier, and they again elect their class officers: Margaret Brooks, President: Charles Misenheimer, Vice- President: Elsie V. Daves, Secretary: and Bobby Walden, Treasurer. The Sophomore year is a short one and soon ends. In my dream the class is now the Junior class, entitled to all the pleasures and privileges of that position. Mrs. Thurman Frye, Mrs. Howard Innes, Mrs. W. B. Heyward, Mrs. Robert Mooring, and Miss Martha Hood are the instructors for this year. Mildred Payne is President of the class and Bobby Walden, Vice-President; Gearldme Braswell, Secretary; and Charles Ross, Treasurer. The first big highlight of the year is the Senior-Junior Prom in November. Next is the Junior play, “Professor, How Could You! directed by Mrs. W. B. Heyward. The final and biggest entertainment is the Junior- Senior Banquet, held at the Y. M. C. A. With all the activities the year seems to fly. In the year 1942 of the original class there are only one hundred and seventy left. The advisers this year are Misses Mary Elizabeth Cox, Amy Riser Harrington, Clara Lee McCombs, Mildred Hutchinson, Grace Frazier, and Mrs. Harry Jackson. The class officers are: Edward Messer, President; J. C. Barbee, Vice-President; Helen Deal, Secretary; and Robert Black, T reasurer. The Senior Class is very fortunate to have an addition this year which is the twelfth grade. Miss Lorraine Gray is the adviser for this group. Th is year is the grandest of all. As Seniors they are respected and admired by the underclassmen. The play, Booth Tarkington ' s “Seventeen,” directed by Miss Harrington, will long be remembered. The year is almost over, and all the Seniors are looking forward to Commencement. As my dream slowly begins to fade, I think of the future. There will be new worlds to conquer, but with the same spirit in which they conquered high school the Senior Class goes ever forward. Page Fouv
