O Father, we thank Thee for the memorable year of our Lord nineteen hundred and thirty-seven for which you gave power and strength to the class and made it possible for us to gather together for the first time in the J. W. Cannon High School Audi- torium and gave J to us the name and duties of Freshmen: we reayld. O Father, that we knew nothing of this new world and the way it was governed, and for this purpose you sent unto us J, W. Harbison as Chief Adviser and Mrs. J. D. Taylor, Miss Martha Hood, Miss Mildred Hutchin- son, Mrs. E. H. Lewis, and Mr. J. Ci, Womble as class advisers-we thank Thee for each of these and for Bobby Ridenhour as our president: Earl Helms, vice- president: Edna Mae Sims, Secretary: Frances Davis, treasurer. With these leaders you have given us we feel that you have prepared this great class of two hundred and ninety-two for the great task which lies before us. Father-this great day has come again, in this, the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and thirty-eight you have again given this class the power to assemble together and bestowed upon us the name and duties of Sophomores. We thank Thee for sending unto our midst Mr. J, L. Dupree as Chief Adviser, Miss Martha Hood, Mrs. J. D. Taylor, Miss Nellie Alexander, Miss Margaret Franks, Mrs. Fred Dennis, Miss Helen Smith. and Mr. Paul Hudson as class advisers, and for Farrell Roberts as our president, Edna Mae Sims as secretary, and Bobby Ridenhour as treasurer. With this wonderful group you have sent to us, we along with the other classes successfully held the State Student Council Congress here in our school. And Heavenly Father-we thank Thee for giving us the power to take part in our greatly improved High School Band under the direction of Mr. Arthur Rohr and also our wonderful Glee Clubs under the direction of Miss Nellie Alexander. Father, again we thank Thee for sending unto us for the first time the highly honored Quill and Scroll Society and for the enlargement of our school paper under the leadership of Miss Helen Whitley. O Father, with this year of vast activity behind us we stand eagerly waiting for a much greater task. In this, the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and thirty-nine, the glleat day has again come before us. As we eagerly gather together to claim the duties and names of Juniors, knowing, Lord, that this year is of great importance, you have sent unto us Mr. J, L. Dupree as Chief Adviser, Mrs. Thurman Frye, Miss Margaret Boylan, Mrs, June Morrison, Mrs. E. H. Lewis, and Mr. J. an I f e CLASS POEM Now we turn back to the past with a sigh, Recalling the days at Kannapolis High- The pains and the joys felt by Forty-and-One, The things we've said and the things we'Ve done. All blend together with mem'ries of you, Our loyal friends, proved so faithful and true. Our teachers, first, we shall never forget How you've helped when our troubles we've met, As the road, at times. proved so rough and so bare, You were ever so ready to help us just there- With hand so strong and a heart always kind, You've taught us never the troubles to mind, Classmates we, too, shall remember the days Together we've spent-'n from our hearts we do praise Friendship, so strong as to help with the load Sustained as down the long highway we strode. .i And now, do our hearts for the future enthrone Rich memories of all the friends we have known. O Father, for each of these capable leaders we thank Thee and with the power you have given unto us we are eager to make use of it as a group and as individuals. Knowing that our greatest event of the four years as a class is the Junior-Senior Banquet and in preparation for this eventful occasion a great sum of money was needed-so with your faith, Lord, we presented an unforgettable Junior Class Play Yours Truly Willie under the direction of Mrs. E. H, Lewis. Then came the Hallowe'en Carnival which was equally successful. Soon the moment came and we had chosen for the first time our own home town, in the Cannon Memorial Y. M. C, A., decorated to the theme of Gone With The Wind. After the Banquet we gathered in the school gymnasium to dance to the music of Russ Gregs' Orchestra. This night was without a doubt one of the highlights of our life, . Father, to the individuals ygu have given power to bring honor to our class. We recall with pride Wylie Moore Yarborough who represented the Hi-Y Club in Overlan. Ohio, and Farrell Roberts who was elected Lieutenant 'Governor of the Tar Heel Boys' State at University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. This, the unforgetable year of our career, having now drawn to an end, we pause to give thanks for guiding us so faithfully, and ask Thee to give us power the oncoming Senior year. In this, the greater year of our Lord nineteen hundred.and forty, our class now numbering one hundred and ninety has gathered again to inherit the names and duties as Seniors. O Father. as we go into the last year of preparation we ask Thee to be with us and guide us, And, Father, we are grateful for Mr. John L. Dupree, Chief Adviser, Miss Lorraine Ciray, Mr. Harold Ostwalt, Mr. W. K. Cromartie, Miss Helen Dugan, and Miss Margaret Abernathy as Class Advisers, From our class we chose Wylie Moore Yarlforough as president: Billy Whitley, vice-president: Helen Harrington, secretary: and Bobby Riden- hour as treasurer. With this capable group of leaders we start this year with a beautiful new and modern library with Miss Ruth Robertson as Librarian. Another great step was taken this year and the Diversified Occupation Course under the supervision of Mr. Cannon. Another highlight of this year is the Art Hi-light booklet edited and presented by the Art Class under the supervision of Miss Nellie Alexander, For all these blessings we give our heartiest thanks, and remembering the phrase where there's a will there's a way. we say- we came, we saw- we conquered. ' ' ,Iso for the Seniors again as individuals, we mention with pride Harvey T if and Bobby Ridenhour who made the all-State and all-Southern Bands. and Farrell Roberts who was representative from our school to the Southern Association 'of Student Government in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and also served on the Auditing Board.
