Class History Listen my friends and you will hear about our class that we love so dearlyl It all happened in 1953 when 53 squirming infants entered Cannelton High School to make their home for the next four years. Several weeks were spent watching our superiors and learning how to survive through the locker jams and the mad rush for lunch. We soon learned the knack of doing things. Class officers we chose were Larry Reed, president; Carl Elder, vice president; Kay Gilbert, secretary; Marion Spencer, treasurer; and Alice Schurtter, historian. Sponsors were Miss Damm and Coach Hafele. Dorris Holland, Pat Wint, Marion Spencer, and Kay Gilbert helped to cheer our basketball team to victory. Student Council members were Jon Harper, Peggy Fiedler, and Carl Elder. When the year ended, some received awards of special recognition—Peggy Fiedler and William Myers, Socalastic; Kay Gilbert, Activity; Bill Wagner, Sports. After three months of recuperating, we were ready to start another year of being underdogs. Only this time our nickname, silly sophs, fit us much better than our nickname of greenies the year before. Our officers were Carl Elder, president; Peggy Fiedler, vice president, Linda Taylor, secretary; Marion Spencer, treasurer; and Alice Schurtter, historian. Mr. Backer and Coach Ramsey were sponsors. Loren Harding, Jon Harper, and Peggy Fiedler were on the Student Council. Since we were getting rather old, it was time to start a little treasury. One day we really had our paws in the suds. We had a lot of fun and hard work washing cars in the park. We made a nice profit, too. Many of us participated in sports, band, and clubs at CHS. At the close of the year we enjoyed a day at Lincoln State Park. At last we were juniors. Our class population had dwindled from 53 in our freshman year to 41. We were probably more active this year than in any of our previous years. Our sponsors, Mrs. Vaughn and Mr. Backer, helped us with many problems. Carl Elder, Linda Taylor, Marion Spencer, and Alice Schurtter were re-elected to their old offices. Denny Huber was elected vice president. For projects we had the magazine sales, concessions at basketball games, and another car wash. The purpose of these projects was to make money for the Junior-Senior Prom, Blue Star, which was held at Hoosier Heights Country Club. Every once in a while one of us looked a little blue from making so many decorations. Peggy Fiedler and Lewis Snyder were on the Student Council. On Class Night Alice Schurtter received the Kiwanis Award for the most outstanding junior. Kay Gilbert, Peggy Fiedler, and Jon Harper were to attend Girls and Boys State. Alice Schurtter, Linda Irvin, and Lewis Snyder were their alternates. Finally we attained the rank of seniors. After being seniors for a few weeks, we found that it wasn’t too wonderful to be called dignified, for we felt anything but dignified. Officers were Ottis Hale, president; Kay Gilbert, vice president; Linda Taylor, secretary; Bill Wagner, treasurer; and Alice Schurtter, historian. William Sampley and Alice Schurtter were on the Student Council. Mrs. Vaughn and Mr. Backer were sponsors again. During the year our government class went to Indianapolis to see the General Assembly in action. We enjoyed this trip for education and fun. Football queen was Pat Wint, and Dorris Holland was runner-up. Peggy Fiedler was basketball queen and Alice Schurtter was runner-up. Ten members of our class presented Spring Fever, our senior play. Thirteen seniors helped to make up the band, which won several honors. In May the juniors entertained our class with the Prom at the Hoosier Heights Country Club. Since all good things must come to an end, thirty-four students graduated fr jm Cannelton High School on May 24, 1957, with knowledge to try to make this world a better place in which to live. 13
