Class History In the fall of 1952, 52 of the greenest students ever to enter cinneltW. High School came together and formed the freshman class. We had 23 from Can-nelton Junior High, 8 from St. Michael’s, 8 from Rome, 7 from Tobinsp rt, and 6 from Consolidated. At our first class meeting we elected the following officers: Larry Polk, president; Sandy Braun, vice-president; Stephen Hav, treasurer; Janis Evans, secretary: and Caro] Baker, Historian. Normaiij Lain, Leroy Rhodes, and Mary Ann Etienne represented our class in the student council along with our president Larry Polk. Coach Joe Hafele was selected as our sponsor. During the year Marilyn Hafele, Janice Sue York, Sandy BrAtfri' na Mary Ann Etienne led the cheers for our freshman team. Awards were given to four freshman on class day. Stephen Hay received the activities award; Larry Polk, the sports award; and Richard Sanders and Carol Baker, scholarship award. We enterd our second year of high school with a class of U9 silly sophomores.The name fit us perfectly. We re-elected Larry Polk as our president and the other officers were Sandy Braun, vice-president; Mary Ann Etienne, secretary; Stephen treasurer; and Carol Baker, historian. That year our student council representatives were Betty Mattingly, Stephen Hay, Robert Harpe, and Larry Polk. Our sponsor was Coach Denny Ramsey. Sandy Braun became varsity cheerleader and many of the boys in our class participated in sports. We started building up our class treasury with bake sales and class dues. Both proved to be a headache, but we had to save money for a senior trip. Cur silly sophomore class was very active. We went on a hayride and presented a convocation program. That program was the last of its kind ever to be given at CHS. The fall of 195k saw 1 6 jolly juniors enrolled at Cannelton High School. We were proud to be upper classmen at last. Larry Polk was again made president and Stephen Hay was vice-president, Mary Ann Etienne was secretary, Richard Sanders was treasurer, and Carol Baker remained historian. Our junior student council representatives were Floretta Schraner, Stephen Hay, Leroy Rhodes, and Larry Polk. We chose Mr. John Vardaman and Miss Marlene Day as our class sponsors and they spent much time helping us in all our activities that year. We earned money again by having bake sales and collecting dues, but our major earn ings came from the sale of magazines and the sale of concessions at the basketball games. Sandy Braun and Nedra Gaynor were varsity cheerleaders. We gave the Junior-Senior Prom at the Hoosier Heights Country Club on May 7. The theme was By the Sea and we made fish for three months for the decorations. On Class Night Stephen Hay received the award given by the Kiwanis for an outstanding Junior. The most important year of our high school education began in the fall of 1955 when 42 seniors returned to school. We lost one member during the year. At the first class meeting we re-elected the same officers we had had the previous year. They were Larry Polk, president; Stephen Hay, vice-president; Mary Ann Etienne, secretary; Richard Sanders, treasurer; and Carol Baker, historian. We chose Miss Marlene Day and Coach Denny Ramsey as our sponsors and Sandy Braun, Robert Harpe, and Larry Polk were our student council representatives. Many members of our class headed organizations this year. Larry Polk was president of the student counil and the band; Betty Reed was editor of the Notlen-nac and president of G.A.A.; Stephen Hay was president of Hi-Y; Carol Baker was editor of the Hi-Life and president of the Kennel Klub; and Richard Sanders was president of the Thespian Club. Mary Ann Etienne served as varsity cheerleader The basketball team, containing many senior boys won first place in the Pocket Athletic Conference. Twelve seniors were members of the high school band and participated in the marching and playir.g contests in which the band received first division ratings. Sandy Braun was crowned football queen and Mary Ann Etienne was crowned basketball queen. During our senior year we made money for the class by collecting dues, selling fire extinguishers, taffy, and stationery and by giving our Senior Play. The play was entitled Huckleberry Finn and ten seniors acted in it. Cn May 2+ the Juniors entertained us at the Junior-Senior Prom. On May 16 we departed for St. Louis where we spent three days on our senior trip. We had a wonderful time there, seeing and doing many things. Carol Baker and Janis Evans were valedictorian and salutatorian of our class. We selected Life Is What You Make It as our class motto and the red rose as our flower. We wore blue caps and gowns. Cur graduation date was May 2L, and on that night the 41 students of the class of 1956 received our diplomas and completed our education at Cannelton High School. 16
