High School came together and formed the freshman class. We had 23 from Can-nelton Junior High, 8 from St. Michael’s, 8 from Rome, 7 from Tobinsp rt, and 6 from Consolidated. At our first class meeting we elected the following officers: Larry Polk, president; Sandy Braun, vice-president; Stephen Hav, treasurer; Janis Evans, secretary: and Caro] Baker, Historian. Normaiij Lain, Leroy Rhodes, and Mary Ann Etienne represented our class in the student council along with our president Larry Polk. Coach Joe Hafele was selected as our sponsor. During the year Marilyn Hafele, Janice Sue York, Sandy BrAtfri' na Mary Ann Etienne led the cheers for our freshman team. Awards were given to four freshman on class day. Stephen Hay received the activities award; Larry Polk, the sports award; and Richard Sanders and Carol Baker, scholarship award. We enterd our second year of high school with a class of U9 silly sophomores.The name fit us perfectly. We re-elected Larry Polk as our president and the other officers were Sandy Braun, vice-president; Mary Ann Etienne, secretary; Stephen treasurer; and Carol Baker, historian. That year our student council representatives were Betty Mattingly, Stephen Hay, Robert Harpe, and Larry Polk. Our sponsor was Coach Denny Ramsey. Sandy Braun became varsity cheerleader and many of the boys in our class participated in sports. We started building up our class treasury with bake sales and class dues. Both proved to be a headache, but we had to save money for a senior trip. Cur silly sophomore class was very active. We went on a hayride and presented a convocation program. That program was the last of its kind ever to be given at CHS. The fall of 195k saw 1 6 jolly juniors enrolled at Cannelton High School. We were proud to be upper classmen at last. Larry Polk was again made president and Stephen Hay was vice-president, Mary Ann Etienne was secretary, Richard Sanders was treasurer, and Carol Baker remained historian. Our junior student council representatives were Floretta Schraner, Stephen Hay, Leroy Rhodes, and Larry Polk. We chose Mr. John Vardaman and Miss Marlene Day as our class sponsors and they spent much time helping us in all our activities that year. We earned money again by having bake sales and collecting dues, but our major earn ings came from the sale of magazines and the sale of concessions at the basketball games. Sandy Braun and Nedra Gaynor were varsity cheerleaders. We gave the Junior-Senior Prom at the Hoosier Heights Country Club on May 7. The theme was By the Sea and we made fish for three months for the decorations. On Class Night Stephen Hay received the award given by the Kiwanis for an outstanding Junior. The most important year of our high school education began in the fall of 1955 when 42 seniors returned to school. We lost one member during the year. At the first class meeting we re-elected the same officers we had had the previous year. They were Larry Polk, president; Stephen Hay, vice-president; Mary Ann Etienne, secretary; Richard Sanders, treasurer; and Carol Baker, historian. We chose Miss Marlene Day and Coach Denny Ramsey as our sponsors and Sandy Braun, Robert Harpe, and Larry Polk were our student council representatives. Many members of our class headed organizations this year. Larry Polk was president of the student counil and the band; Betty Reed was editor of the Notlen-nac and president of G.A.A.; Stephen Hay was president of Hi-Y; Carol Baker was editor of the Hi-Life and president of the Kennel Klub; and Richard Sanders was president of the Thespian Club. Mary Ann Etienne served as varsity cheerleader The basketball team, containing many senior boys won first place in the Pocket Athletic Conference. Twelve seniors were members of the high school band and participated in the marching and playir.g contests in which the band received first division ratings. Sandy Braun was crowned football queen and Mary Ann Etienne was crowned basketball queen. During our senior year we made money for the class by collecting dues, selling fire extinguishers, taffy, and stationery and by giving our Senior Play. The play was entitled Huckleberry Finn and ten seniors acted in it. Cn May 2+ the Juniors entertained us at the Junior-Senior Prom. On May 16 we departed for St. Louis where we spent three days on our senior trip. We had a wonderful time there, seeing and doing many things. Carol Baker and Janis Evans were valedictorian and salutatorian of our class. We selected Life Is What You Make It as our class motto and the red rose as our flower. We wore blue caps and gowns. Cur graduation date was May 2L, and on that night the 41 students of the class of 1956 received our diplomas and completed our education at Cannelton High School. 16 Class Will I, David Adams, will my position on the football squad to Tommy Northenor. I, Robert Chancellor, will my Government Book to Jon Haroer. I, Betty Elverd, will my ability to go steady to Charlotte Hale. I, Mary Ann Etienne, will my crazy mixed up high school days to anyone. I, Janis Evans, will my services as Chauffeur to Lewis Snyder. I, Wayne Garrett, will my athletes feet to Bobby Gilbert. I, James Gaynor, will my locker to Elephant Ears(Loren Harding) I, Nedra Gaynor, will my place in Mrs. Vaughn’s study hall to anybody. I, Marilyn Hafele, will my ability to go steady to Daisy Sinclair. I, Jay Hall, will my seat in Home Room to Teddy Bear(Charles Seibert). I, Robert Harpe, will my chemistry book to Leon Whitehead. I, Denny Hay, have nothing to will. I, Stephen Hay, will my US All Pro Keds Basketball shoes to David Raush . I, Ruth Hogue, will my position as librarian to Kathy Raley. I, Billy Johnson , will Nephew Terry to Coach Hafele. I, Norman Lain, will my fast starts and slow finishes in Track to Guy Schroeder. I, Gary Litherland, will my willingness to stay in school to Buddy Litherland. I, Barbara McBrayer, will my part of the highway to Grandview to Marian Spencer. I, Betty Mattingly, will my Bookkeeping book to anyone. I, Charles Maxey, will my job after school to anyone who wants it. I, Pat Milburn, will my ability to be at school on time ot Jackie Hall. I, Anna Jean Perry, will my position as Majorette to Sonja Badger I, Larry Polk, will my position on the basketball team to Jerry Minto. I, Shirley Sturgeon, will my number 88 in Football co Gene Maxey. I, Elaine Sutton, will my ability to cut hair to Jane Lou Hair. I, Janice Sue York, will the ability to stick to one boy willed to me by Jeannie Huber in ’53� to Marian Spencer. Signed, Sealed, published and declared as and for its last will and testament by the Senior Class of Cannelton High School of 1956 the above named testator, in the presence of us, who at its request and in the presence of him and of each other, have subscribed our names hereto as witnesses on the day and year aforesaid. 17 Class Prophesy May Zb, 1971, proved to be a very unusual day in my life. I decided to go for a vacation, back to dear old Cannelton, Indiana. I left at dawn. After driving for awhile, I decided to stop at a small roadside cafe for a rest. A gas attendant ran out to serve me. and I suddenly recognized his face. Charlie Maxey, is that you? He said, Carol, come in and see who’s washing for me. I did, ar.d there was Anna Jean Perry with soapsuds up to her elbows. V e had quite a reunion that morning and Charlie told me that Lovell Carter was his chief competitor and had a large station right down the road. Next, I stopped in to see Lovell and he told me that Bill Johnson had been made tenth vice-president of the McYess Products Corporation and bought gas from him occasionally for his 1971 Cadillac. He also knew that Betty Jo (Elverd) Roberts was near by with her husband and was still a close friend of Patsy Milburn who was now a very successful dress designer. Around dusk I reached St. Louis, Missouri. I decided to spend the night at the Hotel Claridge where we had-stayed on our senior trip. A very suave clerk cane to the desk to receive me and after staring at him a full five minutes, I yelled, Polky, what in the wor d are you doing here? It was the sane Larry Polk, just 15 years older. He had his most efficient bellhop take my bags and that turned out to be Gary Lit-herlana. Larry invited me to go out with him that evening to see the surprise of my life. We went to the most exclusive night club in town and in enormous lights across the marquee were these wordsJ The St. Louis Woman=Nedre Gaynar. Larry had to catch me after that. I went backstage after the show to Nedra. I had a terrible tine getting past her body-guard until we recognized each other. Norman Lainl” I exclaimed. First Nedra told me that Jgnice Sue York was in Evansville operating a baby-sitting agency. She also told me about Janis Evans who was made head nurse at the Hoxsey Cancer Clinic in Texas and Marilyn Hafele who had married Ronnie, Nedra’s brother, 1L years ago. She even showed me a card she had received a couple of years ago, from Athens, Greece, where Marvin Sturgeon had won the Olympic half-mile. There was also a note on the bottom from Hilbert Seibert, Marvin’s manager. I made it to Evansville by dark and looked up Janice Sue. She took me over to Betty Jean (Mattingly) McDaniels’ house that evening where I learned that Betty Jean was personal sec retary and bookkeeper at the Hay Engineering Company Stephen and Denny Hay were partners and seemed to be doing a tremendous amount of business. Next we stopped at Lucretia’s Exclusive Beauty Salon and there was Elaine Sutton. What a surprise that wast Janice Sue also told me that Shirley Sturgeon was doing commercial art work and Roscoe Schroeder was a contoritionist in the Greatest Show On Earth. The next morning I started on the last leg of myjourney to Cannelton. I stopped on the way to see Barbara(McBrayer) Fulton who was living in Rockport and Richard Bolin who had returned to his beloved Troy to operate a general store. I also visited in Tell City where I saw Mary Ann(Etienne) Blandford. She was holding an important position in the bank which she had acquired after training at Lockyears's. When I reached Cannelton at noon, I went to Lyon’s Cafe for lunch, but when I arrived at the location, I saw the Main Street Tavern. I went in and saw Lee Roy Rhodes and Wayne Garrett tending bar. I immediately recognized one of the customers--David Adams. He told me that he had a farm which covered half of Perry County. I inquired about the rest of my classmates who had lived in Rome and Tobinsport and found out that most of them were still there, but the population had increased tremendously. 'When I asked how that happened. Mousey shouted, Jay Hall did itt Yes, Jay Hall was the proud papa of 20 kids. I learned that Robert Chancellor was operating a Willys Jeep Agency. David also told me that Robert Harpe had become a forest ranger and he and his assistant, Francis Stowe, had developed many new types of trees. As I walked around the town, I noticed a huge sewing shop. I entered and there were three more of my old friends-Ruthie Hogue, Floretta Schraner, and Lillian Schellenburger. They told me they had used their Home Ec Training to start in business professionally. I asked about Betty and Dot Reed and wasn’t too supprised to hear that they were co-mayors of Cannelton. I knew someone must have been responsible for the progress of the town. They also told me that Jimmy Gaynor had been in the army for 15 years and Richard Sanders as I expected was an admiral in the US Coast Guard. As I was leaving Floretta yelled out the door that Joyce Shore, was a Hostess on Eastern Airline. Well, I had located L0 of my classmates. Only Sandy Braun remained. At the courthouse I found a record of her marriage to a millionaire oil well owner from- Oaklahoma City. I made the trip home in record time.
