Many of these students had come from Myers Grade School while the remainder were from Rome, Derby, Tobinsport, St. Michael's and Consolidated. Our first class meeting was for the purpose of selecting class officers and sponsors. The first class president to be selected was Jack Cushman. The other officers for the class were John Joe Hicks, vice-president; Melvin Lauer, secretary; Alice Ahl, treasurer; Mary Nell Minto, historian; Betty Snyder, reporter. Our sponsors were Miss Mable Damm and Mr. John Croy. Norma Jean Williams and Alvin Schmidt were selected our Student Council representatives. Three of our outstanding members of the freshman class received annual awards. The Scholastic Award was won by Daisy Baker, Activities Award by Betty Snyder, and the Athletic Award by Norman Franzman. Thus ended our well spent days as green freshies for now we had advanced to our second year as Sophomores. Our enrollment for the sophomore year lowered to fifty-three due to some withdrawals during the previous year. Mrs. Vaughn and Mr. Worland were our class sponsors. Our class officers were as follows: president, John Joe Hicks; vice-president, Alice Ahl; secretary, Tom Reynolds; treasurer, Joann Williams; historian, Mary Nell Minto. Student Council representatives who were elected for that year were Mary Nell Minto and David Walls. The jolly juniors entered the new school year with forty-nine students. This year we were hosts to the seniors at the Junior-Senior Prom. The prom, named the Stardust Prom , was held at the Hoosier Heights Country Club, which was decorated beautifully, with Si Kohnon and his orchestra as entertainment. Betty Snyder was honored that year by being selected for Girl's State, sponsored by the American Legion Auxilliary. Her alternate was Betty Geer. David Walls was selected for Boy's State. However, since David was unable to attend, Norman Franzman, his alternate, became the Boy's State representative. Eva Catherine Harding became the proud recipient of the Kiwanis Award that year. Our sponsors were Miss Carolyn Hudson and Mr. Roy Enlow. The class officers were: president, David Walls; vice-president, Norma Jean Williams; secretary, Beatrice Sixx; treasurer, Joann Williams; historian, Mary Nell Minto. The Student Council representatives were Mary Nell Minto, John Joe Hicks, and Tom Reynolds. After a well-earned vacation, forty-two returned for the final and most exciting year of all - our Senior year. Mrs. Mildred Vaughn and Mr. Denny Ramsey were chosen to be our class sponsors. David Walls was elected president; Betty Snyder, vice-president; Sharron Kinghan, secretary; Norman Franzman, treasurer; Mary Nell Minto, historian. Student Council representatives were Tom Reynolds as president; Mary Nell Minto, vice-president; David Braun, secretary. Members of the senior class on the Notlennac staff were: Tom Reynolds, Editor; Eva Harding, business manager; Mary Nell Minto and Betty Snyder, senior editors; Betty Geer, underclassman editor; Dale Lyons and Melvin Lauer, sports editors; Norma Jean Williams and Joann Williams, feature and snapshot editors; Daisy Baker and Ruth Ann Coyle, advertising editors; Wilma Holland and Sharron Kinghan, typists. Seniors on the Hi-Life staff were: editor-in-chief, Betty Snyder; feature editors, Betty Geer and Ruthie Coyle; sports editor, Tom Reynolds; exchange editor, Sharron Kinghan; business manager, Daisy Baker. We selected royal blue and white as our class colors and red and white rose buds for our class flowers. The name of the class song was Memories to the tune of On Top of Old Smokey written by Henry Harding. Our motto is Today Decides Tomorrow. The Girls' Class Tourney was won by our class of '51 three consecutive years while the boys won one class tourney during the four years. Congratulations Seniors CITIZEN'S NATIONAL BANK Our service makes friends CLASS HISTORY (Continued) Mary Nell Minto in her senior year was crowned, by popular vote, basketball queen by David Braun, captain of the basketball team. Betty Snyder was maid of honor. We went to Mammoth Cave on our class outing. This outing was not only enjoyed by the class but also by our sponsors Mrs. Vaughn and Mr. Ramsey. Senior service metals were given to all band members of the class which included Robert Clements, Daisy Baker, Mary Nell Minto, Tom Reynolds, Betty Snyder, David Walls, and Norma Jean Williams. The Arion Award was won by Mary Nell Minto which is a National Band Award decided by the band by secret vote. Iola Powers, having the highest scholastic rating, received the honor of being Valedictorian. Betty Snyder, her runner-up, was Salutatorian. David Farmer received a certificate for having perfect attendance throughout his four high school years. Betty Estes also received a perfect attendance certificate during her senior year. The Travel Club Award, which is given to seniors only, was won by Betty Snyder. Tom Reynolds, who had been in five all-school plays and the senior play, received the Thespian Award. The Hi-Y Award, given to the most outstanding athlete of the senior class, was won by David Braun. The award given by the Junior Chamber of Commerce was also won by David Braun. Betty Snyder, by winning both the local and county essay contest, was presented with the DAR Award. The GAA Award was given to the most outstanding and deserving senior girl athlete, Daisy Baker. The Hall Award in remembrance of R. B. Hall was given to David Braun. Daisy Baker won second in the essay contest sponsored by the Legion Auxilliary. David Walls won the poppy poster contest. A few of our students who are planning to further their education by going to college have won scholarships. Daisy Baker received a Special from Indiana University. Betty Snyder, a state; and David Walls a Special Merit. Mary Nell Minto received a Music Scholarship from Evansville College. The American Legion awarded Betty Snyder and Tom Reynolds as being the most outstanding boy and girl of the class. The members of the class andfaculty selected these students. Mary Nell Minto and David Walls received honorable mention certificates. The Rev. Merril B. Me Fall, Methodist Church at Bloomington, Indiana, delivered our commencement address, Tuesday evening, May 23, His subject was Living Life on Tiptoe. W T C J Best Wishes Seniors Tell City 1230 On Every Radio Dial Indiana Compliments Seniors of '51 Cannelton Indiana FRANZMAN'S MARKET CLASS PROPHECY Just sitting here day dreaming, I can just see all my old classmates now. The year is 1961. Daisy Baker is the head of Macy's renowned department store in New York. Homer Bland was recently commissioned to take over the supreme command of the Far East. The new owner of the Bell Telephone Company is none other than Mary Emma Bolin. Just presented with her third child is Mrs. Paul Kreisle (Mary Lois Bolin). She has two boys now and will soon try for a basketball team. David Braun has just signed a contract to play with the House of David. He not only grows a beard but his hair is long, too. Robert Squirrel Clements has taken Sousa's place as No. 1 composer of marches. Our own little Ruthie Coyle has been promoted to head waitress at our World famous Suncete Hotel. Rodney Covey has just been voted the best dancer in the vicinity of Pla-mor. The election was for girls, but Rodney won overwhelmingly. Ray Elder, better known as Duny has just been named the workinest cuss this side of the Smokies.” Congrats!! Winner at a world-wide accounting contest was Miss Bettye Estes, a former Canneltonnian. Now playing professional baseball for the Yanks is David Farmer, who used to perform for our high school team. The new coach at Cannelton High and the first coach to take a team and win the state after an undefeated season was Norman Franzman, who performed this feat last year. Miss Betty Geer is now on a world tour with her sweetie, Charlie Wagstaff. New managers and part owners of the Kroger Corporation are Jack Gaynor and Don Paulin. Don's wife, the former Joann Williams, is now home with her mother after refusing to live with Don. She claimed he was too devoted to the store. Eva Catherine Harding, since leaving her country estate near Rome, has made a good name for herself by singing Italian arias with only a monkey for an accompanist. In the New York society news I read that Henry Harding and wife, Rita, are now living in their new penthouse that hubby designed. The new manager of the General Electric Company is Mrs. Anna Paulin, the former Anna Hicks. She was appointed for her loyalty to this company for the past ten years. The great lover, Joe Hicks, a former Cannelton High School wolf, has just received his fifth divorce. His former wives charged him with cruel and inhuman treatment. Mrs. Wilma Jean Hoesli, the former Wilma Holland, was made famous last week when she gave birth to quintuplets. The noted professor, Mary Pearl Kellems, gave an interesting lecture on How to Get your Man, at the old maid's convention on Friday of last week. Professor Kellems is a former C. H. S. student. Mrs. Sharron Badger, the former Sharron Kinghan, and her husband, Billy, are now living at Ft. Knox where Billy was recently promoted to Commander of this post. Eddie Kreig, better known by hisTformer classmates as The Head is now the owner of a famous magicians show. The show is now playing at the Waldorf. Melvin Lain has just taken over the Chrysler Corporation in Evansville. Mr. Lain started his career as a bookkeeper. George M. Lauer was voted the best jockey ever to ride in the Kentucky Derby after winning his 8th victory in this race. Dale Lyons is now accredited with having the largest farm in southern Indiana. His success is due to hard work. Ex-professor Mary Nell Minto was recently released from the College of Music. Her dismissal was due to excessive drinking. Her close friends said this was a habit acquired from her early association with Norman Teeter Franzman. Burton Ramsey now has his own agricultural school. Mr. Ramsey has proved himself worthy of this position by his discovery of a new fertilizer. George Thomas Reynolds, better known as Tommy has just become the nation's No. 1 soda jerk. Tommy worked hard for this distinction. Iola Powers was just voted the most popular pin-up by the U. S. Marines. Mrs. Janet Taylor, better known by her classmates as Janet Raley, was recently voted the woman with the biggest muscles of the world. Janet acquired these muscles from her battles with her husband, Bob. Miss Betty Snyder just took over her father's business in California. Miss Snyder was chosen Miss Grapefruit of 1961 . Alvin Schmidt is now a prominent owner of a $1,000,000 farm estate called the Chicken Roost. Rev. and Mrs. Herman Schroeder are residing in Podunk where he is the minister in the Episcopal Church. Mrs. Alfred Lutring (the former Beatrice Sixx) and her-children are in Japan where her husband Alfred Lutring is stationed. Paul VanConia is now the owner of the Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Corporation. David L. Walls is now a renowned artist of the famous Cheesecake pose. He attained this position because of his natural ability of art. Miss Norma Jean Williams has just taken over Doris Day's place as actress. Her first picture was Stormy Weather. Mr. J. E. Winn was just voted Mr. America because of his unusual ability to sing high soprano. Miss Jean Young is now leader of the world's famous Singer Sewing Club . Miss Young got her start in Miss Mabel Damm's home economic class. Lovell Zellers has just won the Marathon in the Olympic Games. He got his running ability during his high school days. Sam Baker, Mary Frances Harding, and Eva Rose Ramsey represented the Junior Class on the Hi-Life-Staff. Ralph Hyde, Carol Huber, and Norman Hay worked on the Notlennac Staff. Carol Huber was varsity cheerleader from the Junior Class. In the fall of 1950, we conducted a magazine sale with two sides, with the losers treating the winners to a party at Hay's Camp. The high salesmen were as follows: Carol Huber, George Powers, Sam Baker, Norman Hay, and Bill Estes. The main project for our class was the Junior-Senior Prom. It was held at the Hoosier Heights Country Club, May 12, and a good time was had by all who attended.
