’48 Class History On September 5, 1944, forty-one bright-eyed girls and boys entered C. H. S. ready to suffer all the trials and tribulations of “green freshies.” The officers for our freshman year were Billy Joe Minto, president; Mary Lou Mattingly, vice-president; Jackie Asher, secretary; Howard Traphagen, treasurer; and Wanda Skinner, historian. Our sponsors were William Dauby and Mildred Vaughn. At the end of the freshman year, three members received awards as follows: Arnold Groves, Athletic Award; Billy Joe Minto, Activities Award; and Wanda Skinner, Scholastic Award. The number of members at the beginning of the sophomore year had decreased to thirty-six. William Dauby and E. Ruby Byerley were our sponsors. During the year our class was divided into two groups with Joe Harlen, president, presiding over Mr. Dauby’s group and Jacqueline Minto, vice-president, presiding over Miss Byerley’s group. The other officers for the year were Jackie Asher, secretary; and Billy Joe Minto, treasurer. Our junior year was a happy year for us because we received our class rings and chose our senior class sweaters and jackets. We were host to the senior class at the Junior-Senior Banquet in May of that year. This was an important occasion and we tried to entertain them royally at the Sunlight Hotel. A quartette from Evansville College provided entertainment. Our sponsors were Foster Park and Edgar Etienne with Joe Harlen as president; Wilma Bush, vice-president; Jackie Asher, secretary; and Howard Traphagen, treasurer of the “jolly juniors.” Now we were due for the most important rank of honor—at last we were to be called Seniors. Senior class officers were Allen Forsaith, president; Emma Lee Claycomb, vice-president; Edythe Suddarth, secretary; James Fuchs, treasurer; and Wanda Skinner, historian. We held our class election in much the same way as the National and State elections are held. We had two parties—the Nationalist and the Federalist— and we spent three days campaigning before the final election. All of the Nationalist officers were elected with the exception of the historian. Senior sponsors were Cordelia Healy and E. A. Cushman. The class motto was: He Conquers Who Endures; the colors, were blue and white, and the flower was the violet. The Journalism class which consisted of eight members—Billy Joe Minto, Mary Lou Mattingly, Jackie Asher, Bettye Lou Wheeler, Wilma Bush, James Fuchs, Katherine Morris, and Loren Hicks—had charge of publishing the school paper, the HI-LIFE. Our big accomplishment of the year was the publication of the NOTLENNAC whose staff consisted of Wilma Bush, Loren Hicks, Emma Lee Claycomb, Ralph Heck, Wanda Skinner, Bettye Lou Wheeler, Jackie Asher, James Fuchs, Mary Lee McFarling, and Jewell Burton. The publication of the NOTLENNAC was accomplished under the direction of E. Ruby Byerley. National Honor Society members for our senior year were: Jewell Burton, Wanda Skinner, Loren Hicks, Wilma Bush, Mary Lou Mattingly, Jacqueline Minto, Allen Forsaith, and David Spencer.
