'45 CLASS HISTORY On September 6, 1941, the class of ’45 entered C. H. S. with great expectancy as to what the coming four years might hold in store for them. Fifty-five bright-eyed girls and boys constituted the freshman class, which was the largest to date to enter C. H. S. Thirty-eight were from Cannelton and the remainder came from Rome. Derby, and Tobinsport. This was not an especially outstanding class, but it was a happy, carefree group of young people ready to suffer all the tribulations of Green Freshies.” Several of our class, Bernard Paulin. Junior Evans. Freddie Kendall, Charles Schneider, Bill May. and Charles Daum, played basketball, and Bernard Paulin, Bill May, and Louis Scarborough, played football. That year our class was the class tourney champion by defeating the Sophomore class. Miss Mabel Damm and Mr. Swift were our freshman sponsors. At Mid-term the class was divided into two groups. Frances Graybill, president, presided over Mr. Swift’s group and Michael Rutherford, vice-president, presided over Miss Damm’s group. The other officers for the class were Rose Marie Dunn, Secretary, J. C. Huff. Treasurer and Lenora Maier. Historian. At the end of the freshman year three members received honors as follows: Frances Graybill. scholastic award: Rose Marie Dunn, activities: and Charles Daum. Sports award. Thus ended our year as “green freshies,” for now we had advanced to the rank of Sophomores. Our Sophomore enrollment was only forty-eight due to a number of withdrawals during the previous year. Our Sponsors were Mr. Levy and Miss Mabel Damm with Bill May as president. Anita Nugent, vice-president, Bernard Paulin, secretary, and Junior Evans, treasurer, of the gay Sophomores. It seemed our sportsmen had lost some of their pep and vim” for we lost the class tourney to the dignified Seniors after a hard-fought battle. Now we were due for another rank of honor. We were to be called Juniors. We felt almost as important as Seniors for we could even attend the Junior-Senior Reception. This was a gala affair. We tried to entertain them royally at the Sunlight Hotel with a banquet and also invited Big Rich Richardson of Evansville for entertainment. Our Junior officers were J. C. Huff, president, Doris Mogan, vice-president, Dorothy Harper, secretary. Bernard Paulin, treasurer, Larry Mattingly, historian, and Mrs. Bywaters and Mr. Curts were our sponsors. Three cheers for the Juniors—we again won the class tourney by defeating the freshmen. Before we knew it we were ready for a new rank—-alas—we were Seniors in all their pomp and splendor. Forty-one dignified seniors were enrolled but before mid-term we lost three girls, Mary Emma Harris, Jerry Sugg, and Rebecca Raney, reducing the number to thirty-eight. During December four of our boys were called up for examination for the Army. Three passed but were given an extension until the end of school. We were the second Senior class to respond to the call. four girls graduated. Betty Hendrie entered business college, Dorothy Harper i, beautician school, and Lillian Quisenberry. nurse’s training, venture was our publication of the Notlennac whose staff consisted of Rose (die Kendall. Huff, president; Frances Graybill. vice-president: Freddie Ken-agers Wheatley, treasurer; and Rose Marie Dunn, historian, liss Mabel Damm were our Sponsors.
