Mr. Fiegl is a man who loves his work and genuinely cares about both his students and his subject mat- ter. A graduate of Houghton College, he received his Mas- ter of Science Degree from Alfred University in 1960. He did graduate work at Notre Dame University under the National Science Foundation. Mr. Fiegl was given this honor because in his student’s words, “He really cares.” “He knows my name and says hello although 1 have never taken his class.” He is low keyed but you know he likes his subject.” Mr. Fiegl has been Senior Class advisor since 1979 but he has also has taken on the jobs of Student Senate Advi- sor, Student Council Advisor, and Math Department Chair- man in his 32 years in high school teaching. Mr. Fiegl, the class of 1988 gives one hundred pudding pops for your performance. May many more students en- joy your wit and wisdom. 4 5 1988 Homecoming Queen Tracy Ryan with escort. The enthusiasm started to build as the Lady Redskins shut out Prattsburg with a stunning vic- tory, 3-0. As the evening progressed the bonfire was lit and so were the hearts and spirits of Canis- teo’s fans. They knew that night that something was going to happen to change the course of history in Canisteo football. On October 17th at 1:30 p.m. • it happened. The Canisteo Varsity football team took the field and the crowd was in anticipation of the events yet to come. At half-time the score was 13-7 in favor of Canisteo. The half-time festivities began. The band played as the 1987 Homecoming candidates made their appearance. The 4th attendant was Colleen Speed escorted by Lee Remchuck. The 3rd runner-up was Holly Miller escorted by Abe Carter. The 2nd runner=up was Peggy Kelley escorted by Matt Wilkins. The 1st runner-up was Donna Tingley escorted by Doug Smith. The Queen was Tracy Ryan escorted by Todd Terwilliger. Then came the only moment of saddness as the senior players were honored by friends, faculty, and family. They received flowers as a tribute to their final home game. As the buzzer sounded to end the game the score was 18-7 and the Canisteo Redskins had their first homecoming victory in six years. 7 8 9 10 SPIRIT WEEK SPORTS 11 FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL SEPT 9 DOORS OPEN AT 8:05 WELCOME BACK ! JV Baseball The 1987 JV Baseball team with its 23 member squad, finished its season with nine wins and three losses. The team lost only close games to Wellsville and Bath, while winning the majority of its games by wide margins, giving many playing opportunities to all team members. The strength of this JV team should provide CCS with a winning Varsity baseball team for several years. 67 Row 1: S Minck, D. Cochran. P. Kelley, L. Burdick, K McDaniels, C. Speed. Row 2: J. Jamison. M. Dubois, M. Lathrop, Coach Arthur. K. Morse. N. Pfitzenmaier. GIRLS SOFTBALL The 1987 softball team was composed of a very well rounded and talented group of athletes. The season record did not reflect the team’s true value. Due to their inexperience as teammates, their full potential was not realized. However, the year was looked on as a total success in that we learned a great deal and put forth a determined effort. As we look to 1988 we are anxious and enthuriastic. 68 GIRLS JV SOFTBALL 1st Row: P. Lewis, V. Caward, J. Ordway, T. Schaumberg, M. Schnurle; 2nd Row: Coach Coleman, B. Quick. M. Makitra, D. Mylar. After a fine finish last year, the girls will be looking to set new records and many victories for the 1988 season. The team has 37 members this year. Its a relatively young team, with many fine runners coming up for the future. The team is led by four talented Seniors; Donna Tingley, Holly Miller, Jeanette Bowker and Becki Griswold. Holly Miller and Jeanette Bowker are distance runners for the team and have made valuable contributions to our team scoring. Their hard work and dedication has been an inspiration to the girls team. Becki Griswold has given the Canisteo Girls Track team valuable points in field events. Becki throws the shot and discus and will be out to get a school record this year. Donna Tingley currently holds 4 school records, 2 coun- ty records and was first in the 1500 run in sectionals in 1987. We would like to wish these girls the best of luck in the future. 70 BOY’S TRACK 1st row: B Miller, R Runyan, J. Coots, K Terwilleger, B Mulhollen, C. Ells, T. Terwilleger, G. Sterns Tennis The tennis team is facing a year of rebuilding after winning 6-4 league re- cord last year. Brett Ahrens took top honors by winning the County Singles Championship. Brett in singles and a strong doubles team of Kurt Bangs and Chris Christ also qualified for the sectionals in Rochester. The doubles team placed high enough to go back to the qualifying consolation tournament at Future Stars, Veterans Kurt Bangs, Chris Horey, Theresa Gorman, Carrie Cassidy, Ai- mee Hubertus, Ron Acker, Ann Riv- ers, Jennie Witherow, Leslie Hought- aling, Wendy Sterns, Dawne Mullen and Kerry Barnes will form the core of 1988’s team. With veteran Chris Crist being lost to Hornell, Magnus Uven- feldt may fill the void by lending some “Swedish Might” to the team 72 GIRL’S SOCCER Row 1: L. Lehman. B Patton. B Young. D. Tingley, L. They were also placed at the top of the heat for sectional seeding purposes. With an overall record of 17-4- 0 they became 15-3-0 within their league. In sectional play they reached the quarterfinal round but lost a heartbreaker to Alfred-Almond in a 1-0 shootout decision. Senior Colleen Speed lead in goals (13) and assist (9) this year and was placed along with Donna Tingley on the first team for league all-stars. Junior Mary Lynne Coleman who led second in goals was selected to the 2nd all-star team. Mindy Davis was noted M.V.P of the league with 10 shutouts out of 19 games for the season Seniors Colleen Speed, Mary DuBois. Donna Tingley. Peggy Kelly, Weandy Peters and Becky Griswold will certainly be missed for the 1988 season. The future looks bright however for those who remain, as they will try once again to kick their way to a very deserving sectional patch. 73 VARSITY FOOTBALL Top Row: D. Dietrich, D. McCormick, S. A season highlight was a victory over War- saw, the first homecoming win in several seasons. Attaining All-League Honors were: Tom Crook - Quarterback Jim Dodge - Split end Jeff Baier - Linebacker Darrin McCormick - Placekicker and Punter 2nd-Team Awards went to: Dave Peters - Flanker and defensive back Mike Davis - Running back and defensive back Chris Carroll - Defensive tackle Tim Cline - Linebacker Eclipsing long-standing school records were Tom Crook with 71 completions in 166 attempts (both set in 1969) and Jeff Baier with 131 tackles (set in 1973). Although the efforts of many graduating Seniors will be missed, the future looks bright as the junior varsity posted an outstanding 7-1 record in 1987. 74 J.V. FOOTBALL Top Row: M Mehlenbacher. Mark Andrews completed an outstanding career as he established new records in the 3 mile, 5K and a new course record. Mark also won a sectional patch as did Luther Stevens. The team will miss both Mark and Luther as well as fellow Seniors John Douglass and Kyle Cassidy. Next years team will be young with just one Senior but a strong group of 9-11 graders. 76 GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY Top Row: Coach Rahr. A. Tolan, K. Todd, H. Roffe, I. Miller, T. Giglio, D. Phenes. H. Miller, S. Pierce, S. Baker. 2nd Row: I. Spagenberg. M. Buckpilt, T. Hughes, S. The girls then placed 3rd in the Sectionals as they ran a very strong race. Ilsa Miller won a Sectional Patch with Michelle Peters and Irene Spangenberg also running well. Ilsa Miller set a new school course record and Michelle Peters broke the three-mile record. Next years team prom- ises to be as strong as this year’s. Just Tonia Giglio will be lost to graduation and the top seven girls will be returning. 77 SWIM J. Burchard. K. Terwllllger, S McDaniels, C. Ells, K. Cassidy 2nd Row: K Bicker. W. Spagenburg Varsity Swimming With victories over Alfred-Almond, Letchworth, Mt. Morris, Naples, Wayland, Wellsville, and York the swim team splashed to a winning 11-4 record this year. In Southern Tier Swim League competition the swimmers finished a strong third behind Addison and Haverling. Sorely missed next year will be Senior, Kyle Cassidy, a forceful contender in the Breaststroke. However, with the rest of the team returning the future looks very bright for Redskin Swimming. 78 WRESTLING 1st row; M. Lincoln, D. Crook, C. Stewart, D. Cartella, P. Dodge, 2nd row: J. Donlon, D. Co-Champions of Steuben County League 1st place • Midlakes Tournament 1st place - Campbell Tournament 2nd place - 1988 Class D Sectionals Canisteo will miss the fine efforts of this year’s seniors. Dave Cartella, Tom Crook, Mike Davis, Don Dietrich, Kevin DuBois, Nick Kellogg and Rich Pierce have made many contributions to this year’s team. 79 BOYS VARSITY BASKETBALL CANISTER ZZ i UJWSTF -' U j Top Row: Coach Pacanowski, P. Over the next nine games we went 7-2 and ended with a respectable .500 season. We will miss our seven Seniors: Jrff Baier. Tim Cline. Jim Dodge, John Douglass, A.J. Martin, Dave Peters, and Magnus Uvenfeldt. Your dedication to basketball and to each other will forever be the “tie that binds.” Our futre will depend largely on Junior, Don Stewart and Sophomores, Mike Cline, Pete Peters and an excellent cast of JV players. Steve Napier led the team with rebounds and shots blocked. Rich Drake had 65 assists and 86 steals. Coach Pat House 8t GIRLS VARSITY BASKETBALL Top Row: Coach Mulhollen, K. McDaniel. T. Bixby Girls Basketball 1988 Despite the many injuries and vigorous schedule the girls varsity squad had to face this year, their constant efforts established many major improvements. Sophomore Mindy Davis poured in the most points this year while Senior Colleen Speed dominated with assists. Junio Laura Lehman, a first year player, controlled the boards for the most rebounds of the season. The lady Redskin will certainly miss the talent of it’s graduating Seniors: Pam Ray, Colleen Speed, Donna Tingley, and foreign exchange student Doris Henkel and all their contributions made to the team. The future looks promising however as most of this young squad will return as well as the egarness of many junior varsity players. 82 GIRLS J.V. BASKETBALL N. Johnson, B Carrig. H. Brown, P. SAT.T) EDITOR’S PAGE As our Senior year comes to a close, I’d like to say thanks to everyone for making this yearbook possible! You all are an important part of this book. The theme- “Sparkling Moments” is a suitable one. Through all the confusion, disorganization, frustration and apathy that comes with just the word, “yearbook” there have been many sparkling moments. Those were moments of hope that shown through the dark cloud of disillusion- ment. Many times I wondered are we going to make it? And we did. It’s been a crazy year and I’d like to thank the staff who helped put it all together. Chris Rohalla, Theresa Gorman, Carrie Cassidy, Mary Lynne Coleman, Chris Horey, Lisa Edgett, and Brian Kennel. You guys are great. I’d also like to recognize Mr. Ells, Mr. Woehr, Booster Club and Student Senate for helping us out with pictures or finances. Good Luck to all of you next year. Don’t let antagonisms and worries weigh you down instead let that sparkle shine through.
