Music blasted over Rotary Field. The marching band, cheerleaders, and flagbearers gleefully mixed in a blur of red and white. The homecoming queen candidates were royally introduced on a horse drawn carriage. The afternoon ceremony accomplished the crowning of the Queen for 1986. The excitement of football and soccer games blend in our memories with the mellow music of Next Exit in a beautifully decorated gym. Of course for the truly dedicated, there were hours of cleanup before Homecoming became a special memory of our time. 2 DEDICATION — A TEACHER FOR ALL SEASONS The Senior Class of 1987 is proud to dedicate this yearbook to Edward Woehr. He has been a significant influence on each and every student he has been in contact with since he joined Canisteo's faculty in 1968. Mr. Woehr graduated from Ottowa University in Ottowa, Kansas. He came to Canisteo from Arkport High School. He is married to Penny Woehr, a 6th grade teacher, and they have two children, a son Eric and a daughter Marnie, who is a member of the Class of 1987. Mr. Woehr has been the driving force behind Student Senate, Ski Club, Academic All-Stars, Government Intern- ship, and Energy Awareness projects. His quiet humor has helped us through the planning and execution of many dances and activities. Even when he hasn't had time, he has made time for the students and their problems. Mr. Woehr is a teacher who puts his students first. When he is not working with the students, Mr. Woehr sails and skis. He also spends his leisure hours with his gar- den and computer. Mr. Woehr, we enthusiastically extrapolate from our experiences that you have been part of our happiest moments and will continue to influence many future Kanisteans in a compassionate and positive way. We sincerely appreciate the many pleasant memories your leadership has provided. WKufcCO hriitn They're playing our song Bosom buddies Who said English wasn't fun? Music Injun Style Miami Clash! Schumaker GOLF Golf - 1987 The 1987 Golf Team will try to improve upon last year's 3-10 Record with returning veterans, Jeff Baier, Jim Dodge and Brian Congdon. We'll also be looking for help from last years J.V.'s, Chris Bertram, Mike Schumaker, Paul Banko, Danielle Roffe and Jay Babbitt. 65 Row 1: Renac Holmes, Theresa Gorman Row 2: Kathryn Shaw, Dorey McChesney, Carrie Cassidy, Chris Crist, Melanie Raish, Marnie Woehr, April McChesney, Theresa Layfield Row 3: Kurt Bangs, Brett Ahrens, Chris Horey, Coach Thomas TENNIS The tennis team finished the season with a winning 8-4 record last year. Annie Gooley was undefeated in all league and non-league first singles play, but faced second round elimina- tion at the sectionals in Rochester. Annie will be sorely missed, but coming on really strong this year will be the veteran team of Brett Ahrens, Kurt Bangs, Chris Horey, Chris Crist, Dorey McChesney, Melanie Raish, Renae Holmes, Marnie Woehr, Theresa Gorman, Carrie Cassidy, and a number of new pros- pects who may be moving into the starting line-up. 66 Top - J. Bottom - M. Lincoln, C. Ells, K. Terwilliger, D. Hereth, A. Dubois, A. Brown. SWIM The swim team ended the season with 8-9 record. With a very young team the future looks very bright. High points of the season were victories over Corning, Elmira Southside, Al- fred Almond, Naples, York, and Walsh. Bob Matteson, the lone senior on the team, dominated the scene in the county with a 15-2 record for the year. Bob fin- ished second in the Counties and Sectionals where he broke the school record for 11 dives with 361.40 pts. Many new swimmers and a slowly maturing group of age group swimmers made the season so successful. With the bulk of the team returning and with quality swim- mers in each event the entire team looks forward to the 1988 swim season. — Coach Roser 67 Top - Coach Harp, D. McCormick, D. Peters C. VARSITY BASEBALL The Varsity Baseball team, being young did well against some of the tough competition it had to face. The team finished 4-10 overall and 4-4 in our league. We were seeded 14 in the sectionals and played number 3 seeded Batavia- Notre Dame and lost 13-4. We were short on pitchers when Chris Davis threw his arm out against A-A and was out for another 4 games. That hurt! Being as young as we are we should be able to come bouncing back next year. 68 Top-E. Booth, N. Kellogg, M. Cline, T. Cline, M. Richardson, Middle-Coach Kratzer, Shawn Powers, S. O'Rourke, T. Crook, D. Dietrich Bottom- D. Cartella, R. Drake. Stats: T. Magill, K. Groves J.V. BASEBALL The Redskins started off slow by losing the first two games. But the month of May seemed to have a brighter outlook when Tim Cline tossed a two hitter against Campbell in a 15-3 Redskin victory. Tom Crook and Rich Drake then took over on the mound winning 5 out of the next 7 games. Tom took Wellsville to the limit twice loosing 6-4, 6-5. Rich Drake topped Addison 5-2 with a four hitter. The Redskins also had some hot bats as six players hit over .300 and 10 or more hits. Mike Cline, Rich Drake, Tim Cline, Tom Crook, Dave Cartella, and Don Dietrich. This season turned into a successful one as the Redskins ended up with winning 6 of 8 in May and having an overall record of 6 wins 4 losses. I would like to thank each J.V. player for a great season. —Coach David Kratzer Top-N. Pfitzenmaier, M. Davis, K. Swanson Middle-M. Ventor, K. Mylar, T. Ryan, L. Moran, M. Lathrop S. The players had a great deal of enthusiasm and desire to achieve. They had a very good attitude about each other and competition. In spite of a 6-11 record the team was strong enough to attend sectionals and win the first round 18-14 over Wheat- land-Chili. In round 2 the girls lost to Alfred-Almond in the last inning 11-10. Top hitters for the season were Sherry Bettenger with 29 and Mindy Davis with 28. Most RBI's were attribited to Mindy Davis with 26 and Sherry Bettenger with 23. The most valuable senior award went to Sherry Bettenger. Seniors that will be missed for their friendship and talent are: Michelle Ventor, Theresa Cartella, Sherry Bettenger, Lisa Moran and Kim Swanson. —Coach Susan Arthur Top- M. Coleman, J. Jamison, K. Donna Tingley set three school records, one in the 1500, 800 and she was a member of the 3200 Relay team, along with Jeanette Bowker, Joanne Donnelly and Krista Todd. Jean Knapp set two school records, one in the high jump and one in the triple jump. Michelle House set a school re- cord in the 400 run. Congratulations to Donna Tingley and Jean Knapp for receiving the M.V.P. Award and Mi- chelle Peters for the Most Improved Runner. The girls track team will be losing the talents of one senior, Michelle House. We would like to thank Michelle for her hard work and dedication throughout the year! Row 1: I. Miller, M. Peters, D. Simpson BOYS TRACK The track team ended the year with a 14-1 record and a 5th place finish in the Class C Sectionals. Seniors Mark Simpson, Steve Woodworth and Rick Salvagin will hurt the Canisteo cause; but with a large and very talented 11th grade group the team should be very tough and a sectional contender in 1987. High lites of the season were 2nd place finishes in the Campbell relays the John Reed Invitational. Dispite the 1 pt. loss to A-A in the final meet of the season, the team should be proud of the outstanding effort all put in at that meet and throughout the season. The team cap stoned the season with the county championship over Hammondsport for the 3rd time in 4 years. The entire team is reved and ready to better their out- standing performance of 1986 with an umblemished one in '87. Go get 'em Redskins! —Coach Roser 73 1st Row: D. Montgomery, N. Kellogg, K. Narrow losses to Elba and Warsaw proved the team a worthy league opponent. Tom Crook flirted with school passing records set nearly twenty years ago, while Chris Davis turned in a solid year at wide receiver. Dave Darley eclipsed a school record with an 82 yard interception return. Davis and Jeff Baier were named to the Livingston County All Star Team. The future of Redskin football holds some promise with the return of fourteen letter winners, along with the addition of some talented players moving up from the junior varsity squad. 74 Top-S. Their overall record ended up 12- 6-2 while their league record fell to 7-2-1. The ladies earned a thirteen game winning streak during the season something Canisteo girls soccer has never seen. Colleen Speed who was named to the first team all-star selection was high scorer with 17 goals and 8 assists for the season. Mindy Davis and Donna Tingley were both named to the second team. Senior Jodi Ives, Barb Lewis and Joanne Donnelly paved the way in leading the Redskins to two games of Section V competi- tion. One of these wins was against Alfred-Almond who defeated us in 12 previous games. In 1987, the highlight was our group IV County Tournament victories. I would like to thank the players, statisticians, cheerleaders, and fans for their positive enthusiasm. It resulted in our second finish for the sportsmanship Award, .017 of a point behind Greenwood. The coaches thank our seniors for all their fine efforts: Dave Preston selected to the Steuben County Class C first team all stars. Dave Ells was an honorable mention selection. Both Daves also participated in Steuben County's Outstanding senior game. To Chris Davis, your hustle and fine defensive play won't be forgotten. To Steve Duncan, your dedication and love of the game will always be appreciated. To Juniors; great aspirations are expected. Seeds sown laboriously now could reap benefits in 1987-1988. During the last thirteen years, science and soci- ety have made some unbeliev- able strides - both forward and backward. As a matter of fact, experts tell us that a generation, which we once thought took twenty years to complete, has now shrunk to just four. All of us at CCS believe that we have given you the necessary tools to make it in this changing and complex world; but you will still have to provide the initiative. Canisteo was certainly fortunate to have her services over the years. EDITORS PAGE Drops of Time. A very fitting theme as we look back over our high school years. Years to cherish as we move on through the future. We started off the year on a positive note and really got the ball rolling. We faced many hardships along the way and ended up losing over 50% of the yearbook staff. The few of us that were left managed to take all of our inexperience and put it together and, after a while, everything started to make sense and fall into place. We have enjoyed putting this yearbook together for you , the students of C.C.S. We have tried to give you more of what you asked for. We hope you liked the extra-added candids. This years' yearbook is not brought to you without frustration and time, but there has been a lot of dedication and hard work put into this book. We would like to thank everyone who stuck with us through this yearbook: Marnie Woehr, Susie Martin, Toni Stevens, Chris Horey and Rhonda Walker, Andrea Green- field. We would also like to thank Audrey Mochel for all her hard work and time; Larry McCullen from Jostens Printing and Publishing for all the tips he gave us; Mr. Babbitt, the faculty, and administration for letting us be with the photographer and allowing us to come in and disturb classes for pictures, and the advertisers, patrons, and boosters. We never could have done it without you people! We hope you liked the 1987 Kanistean. Good luck to next years staff and to Mrs. Mochel, for we, the editors must move on, through time. Cathy Bertram Julie Pierce 130 DROPS OF TIME Throughout our life time has passed, Falling behind us upon the path. We've never realized how much it meant Was all of our time wisely spent? We've played some sports and heard the cheers. What a way to pass the years. Our high school days should be treasured All of our fun be measured. The teachers, the work, all of our friends. We think of these as our senior year ends. The time that dropped quickly behind Should be cherished or so we find. Our high school years were filled with games Now nothing to us will be the same As we leave C.C.S. far behind We leave a puddle, drops of time. August 26, 1986 Julie Pierce 132 JOSTENS
