The Redskins placed third in the Corning West Tournament by defeating Watkins Glen 8-4. Although having 5 starters hitting over .300, Canis- teo finished the season with a loss to Geneseo 5-3; leaving a record of 7 wins and 9 losses. With solid pitching, hitting and 8 starters back, Canisteo will be shooting for a winning season in 84-85. -Coach Kratzer Row 1:D. Kratzer, B. Houghtaling, R. Snyder. B. Getters. C. Stewart, B. Davis VARSITY SOFTBALL The 1984 softball season was spent rebuilding and recovering from the loss of nine seniors in 1983. The team came a terrific distance toward respectability this year. Our record shows that success was not measured in statistics but in per- sonal goals met and team growth realized. As the year ended we all felt a pride in our accomplish- ments in 1984 and looked forward to '85 with enthusiasm and high expectation. Coach Arthur 70 J.V. SOFTBALL Row 1: V. O'Brien. T. Fairman. M. BOY’S TRACK 1984 proved to be a very productive year, the team went from a 0-8 record in 1983 to a 9-4 record and county champs in 1984. The team was extremely young with most runners being exposed to the sport for the first time. County champs were Brian Speed in the 3200m Re- lay, 400m Run, and 1600m relay; Scott Miller in the 3200m Relay, 3200m Run, and 1600m Run; Andy Schultz in the 3200m Relay, 800m run, and 1600m Re- lay; Jim Tingley in the 3200m Relay and 1600m Relay; Trail Mullins in the 400m I.H.; Rick Salvagin in the 1600m Relay; Fred Klindt in the Shot Put and Discus; Dan Kelley in the Pole Vault; and Eric Woehr in the triple jump. Seniors Jeff Young, Scott Miller, Fred Klindt, Eric Woehr, and Dan Kelley will be missed a great deal, but there is an excellent group of underclassmen returning which should make Canisteo a team to look out for in 1985. Laurie Moran, the only se- nior, led the relay team (Peggy Koch, Dyan Preston, and Michelle House) to a sectional victory. Jeanette Bowker also secured a sectional victory in walking; Mary Lynn Coleman placed 2nd in that event. Dyan Preston placed 3rd in the 400m hurdles and 7th in the 200m dash. These girls’ efforts placed the Redskins 5th overall at Sectionals and 8th in the State Qualifiers. Each team member set personal goals during the season. 1985 should see the fulfillment of those goals. 73 GOLF Standing: H. Bossard. C. Roffe. C. Allen. J. Ives, L. Tarantino. P. Banko. Lewis The tennis team had a much improved season this year, winding up with an even .500, and the losses that we did suffer were very close matches. With a strong group of veterans coming back this year, we stand a good chance of being contenders for the top spot in the league. Annie Gooley, Bret Ahrens, Monica Koenig, Mary Anne Shaver and Kurt Bangs will head up the team of returning veterans. 75 1. Keith Baier: 2nd Team division II offensive end. 2. Ken Stewart: All-Greater Roch- ester Honorable Mention Lineman, First Team Division II offensive tackle. 2nd Team Division II Defen- sive end. 3. Brad Geffers: 2nd Team Division II fullback. 2nd Team Division II linebacker. 4. Jay Richardson: 1st Team Divi- sion II safety. In August, we set modest goals for a team that lost every game the previous year. We expected our team to play aggresively and we wanted to make sure our hard work paid off with at least one victory. Upon the conclusion of the season, the coaching staff felt that we had indeed accom- plished these goals and more. We won three games (in a row) over Living- ston County rivals Perry, York, and Letchworth. We played three more very close games with Barker, Warsaw, and Geneseo. We were shut out by Alexander and Elba but left the field confident that we had done our best. The Canisteo Redskins came out of the ‘‘cellar to finish in a tie for 3rd place in Division II. Individuals were also awarded high honors for their play in the Division and throughout the Section V. They are all seniors: Keith Baier, Brad Geffers, Jay Richardson, and Ken Stewart; and will be sorely missed in next seasons lineup. Our team was also bolstered by Junior students like Bryan Speed who led all Canisteo players in total offense and Brad Houghtaling- the team leader in total defense. It should be noted that Steve Woodworth, a junior, performed consistently well while logging a great deal of playing time. In conclusion, I wish to thank my staff: Joe Prunoske, Pat House, and Lee Montgomery for their hard work and dedication to making this a successful year. To my seniors, thank you for believing and remaining in football- congratulations for your efforts and accomplishments-you will never be forgotten. To the returning letterman and JV “graduates” be ready to face the task at hand and the success that will come from hard work. 76 _FOOTBALL VARSITY: Row 1: Coach Prun- oske. K. Stewart. T. Dietrich. The record does not indicate the excellent soccer played by the team nor the enthusiasm displayed from the very first face-off in Keshequa to the final score and victory in Avoca. Seniors Page Bangs, Mary Anne Drake, Michelle Erklenz, Julie Gorman, Peggy Koch, and Dyan Preston will be missed from the starting line-ups next fall. Michelle, Page, Peggy and 8th grader Colleen Speed combined as high scorers in '84. Michelle and Mary Anne were the team’s MVP's as well. The whole team will miss each of the senior’s enthusiasm and desire to win and excell in soccer. A solid core will be returning with a large Junior class to call upon to fill the shoes of the graduating Seniors. Most improved honers went to Kim Swan- son and Lisa Moran with Rookie of the Year going to Sherry Bettinger, all Juniors! With other excel- lent players coming from 7. 8. 9 and 10th grades, the team is hoping to have more scores and wins to take us to the top in 1985. 78 J.V. SOCCER Row 1: Coach House. B. Lewis. M. The team this year was composed of seven 10th grad- ers. After several years of coaching changes this was a year for settling down. Each game found us setting up realistic team and personal goals and, one by one, meeting those goals. A great deal of game sense was absorbed, skill levels increased, and camaraderie developed. As the season ended we found ourselves with an im- proved record over last season and a pride in ourselves and our efforts. We truly learned that the value of sports is not in winning but in the desire to win. We all plan on being bail together next year—so look out! Coach House 79 CROSS COUNTRY Row 1; Coach Rahr, P. Darci Wright, and Lisa Moran. We have high hopes for next season with returning vetrans Sherry Bettinger (co captain), Bridget Morse, Kim Swan- son, and Donna Tingley. The JV Volleyball ended its season with a hopeful 8-4 record. The team grew together as they marked their second winning season in a row. Their play is characterized by spontaneous aggressive play at the net. High servers of the season were Pam Ray, Colleen Speed, and Cindy Allen (co captain). There is much promise seen in returning players Jodi Ives (co captain), Tracy Ryan, and Dori Cali. Jill Ja- mison and Mindy Davis also added a lot of spark to the team. 83 SWIM TEAM Row r.-M Brott. Seniors Libby Hammond and Ed Salvagin will be sorely missed next year for their years of dedication and insipration to the sport. Under- classmen dominated the team this year however, and it looks to be the trend for some years to come, as other team members were juniors; Wayne Mulhair and Michelle Davis, sophomores Andrea Greenfield, Barb Lewis, and Bob Matteson, freshmen; Kyle Cassidy, Doug Smith, and Todd Terwilliger, 8th graders; Mike Brott, Jeanette Bowker, Wendi Stearns and Becky Young, and 7th graders; Andy DuBois, Doug Hearth, Brad Miller, and Tina Salvagin. We also had to face the fact that once again we would be one of the smaller teams in B-C League. The solution to the problem was hard work and hussle. By Christmas, we had proved we could win and our overall record was 3-2. Vacation and mid-season injuries dropped us quickly to 3-7. As of this writing, we have won four straight and will finish in third place. Certainly we will miss seniors Keith Baier and Jay Richardson, our top offen- sive and defensive players from the past two years. Tom Dietrich and Bryan Allen will not be forgotten for their many fine moments throughout the past four years. David Cunningham - a “first year senior has also made significant contributions to our success. Brad Houghtaling, this years leading rebounder and 2nd leading scorer will be looked upon to lead next years squad. Brad will be joined by juniors Phil Cali, Clark Garner, Eric Hosmer, and sophomore Dave Preston all of whom are returning lettermen. Pat House and his J.V. team deserve a great deal of praise and credit. Their overall record of 9-5 will certainly inspire Canisteo Basketball to remain near the top of the league. Best wishes to the seniors, may you too someday be called “coach”, and for you juniors, sophomores, and freshmen be ready to answer the call for victory. ____________________________________________________Coach Pacanowski BASKETBALL standing: K. They included three days of spirit enhancing activities: dress-up day, red and white day, backwards day, pep activities at the annual bon-fire—all capped by the Homecoming Football Game and Homecoming Dance. The 1984-85 Student Senate has taken on a special project designed to reduce the number of fatalities and crippling injuries on our highways. During the winter, Mr. Hackemer introduced the Student Senate to the Stu- dents Against Driving Drunk program and encouraged us to attend the SADD conference in Elmira. We wish to dedicate the Canisteo SADD chapter to Mr. Hackemer in memory of his concern for the safety and welfare of Canisteo students. Our SADD chapter shall be known as the John J. We came to expect very straight forward and honest advice. For the students as well as the faculty. Mr. Hackemer was much of the backbone behind the success of our school. Production of the 1985 Kanistean began early in 1984 with se- nior portraits being taken, selecting the cover design and organiz- ing a new staff. Because the book must be finalized by early March, the staff spent countless hours during the early part of the school year, selling advertisements, taking photographs, creating layouts and writing copy. No yearbook can be completed without funding. We would like to thank all students who sold advertisements, collected money, and worked at our fund raisers. Without their help, there would be no Kanistean '85. Editors Janet Donnelly and Lynda Tarantino, along with Business Editor, Heather Bossard, worked extremely hard to help create the 1985 Kanistean. They, with Mary Anne Shaver, Art Editor, photog- raphers Craig Cude, Mark Cline, Bill Simons, Rich Henn and the rest of the staff, designed a yearbook which reviewed 1985 as we saw it from Canisteo Central. 105 SKI CLUB The purpose of our ski club is to provide the student with an opportunity to estab- lish a skill base in the life long sport of alpine skiing. Harold of the Evening Tribune. standing: R. Walker, L. Herrington, S. Barnard, M, Weohr. seated: R. Sawyer, R. Griswold. J. Donnelly. C. Fountain. School year 1984-85 saw Canisteo Central School and other high schools in Stebuen County embroiled in a new type of competition among their students. ‘‘Academic All Stars” became a house- hold word as trivia games, old regents exams, almanacs, and all sorts of informational sources were being used by students and their parents to prepare our first academic competition team to do battle with equally well prepared students from other area high schools. The Steuben County School Board Associaion had decided, “to recognize and reward excellence in academic achievement, to encourage participation by all students to the best of their ability and to foster peer recognition. To do this, they had decided to establish academic compettion between schools through a program similar to the “Its Academic” program on television. Canisteo established its teams for this in November 1984 with Janet Donnelly, Lori Herington and Marnie Woehr showing up for the first meeting to get the teams organized. Within a few days, they were joined by Mr. Woehr’s encouraged volunteers” Crystal Fountain, Shawn Barnard, Bridgett Freeland and Becky Griswold. This combined group then began to investigate how to get the show on the road by having some type of practice sessions and to encourage a few more students to join them to round out the teams necessary. Rhonda Walker, and Bob Sawyer were recruited. After school practice sessions resulted with only 2 or 3 being able to attend because everyone was also involved in many other activities which had been schoduled previously, therefore, it was decided to have early evening competiion - type practice sessions which would still allow students to attend play practice, athletic competitions, etc. We knew we had a winning team when the competition practice sessions were so well attended. February 16, 1985 saw our first competition with another school when the Canisteo Academic All- Stars held the Savona team to a 23-23 tie. This allowed both Canisteo and Savona to proceed to the second round of competition. As we are writing this, we are expectantly looking forward to this second round. Our A team was composed of Crystal Fountain, Janet Donnelly, Lori Herrington, Rhonda Walker, Marnie Woehr, and Bridgett Freeland. They were ably backed up by the B team composed of Shawn Barnard, Bob Sawyer, and Becky Griswold, They were all encouraged to do their best by co-advisors Miss Leigh Wright and her dad, Mr. Wright. 113 ART CLUB The Art Club was originated a few years ago, by a group of students who wished to help with expenses of the Art Department by earning extra money through various fund raising activities. This year the Art Club sponsored two very successful Video dances, the proceeds go- ing towards buying a new ceramic kiln and a number of items that were needed. They are presently involved in helping to organize vari- ous Art displays and exhibits that are held throughout the school year, to promote a professional attitude about their craft, help in school and community service, and to learn more about Art. A group of interested mem- bers were involved in a Ceramic workshop which was held several times for Canisteo students at the College of Ceramics at Alfred University. 1. Top row: K. Truscott T. The story is set in Austria, where Maria Rainer (played by Mary Anne Drake), a nun, meets and falls in love with Captain Von Trapp. Together, with his children, they escape the clutches of the Nazis. Hours of intense practice and choreogra- phy were involved in the musical's success. Under the direction of Mark Smith, Mary Anne Drake completed her high school dra- ma career. Todd Giglio, Rhonda Holmes, Jeff Combs and Beth Sawyer were essential members of the cast. Special “thanks are to go to Mrs. Talbot for costuming and Lau- rie Fiegl, accompanist.
