1984 KANISTEAN CANISTEO CENTRAL SCHOOL CANISTEO, NEW YORK Cover drawn by Todd Giglio l 1984 Dedication The 1984 Kanistean staff is proud to dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Joseph Pacanowski. As an only child, Joseph Pacanowski was bom on December 20, 1952 in Williamsville, New York where his parents still reside. Joe graduated from St. John Neumann High School in 1970 when he went to St. John Fisher to receive his B.A. in secondary education in 1974. Upon receiving his Master’s Degree in 1976 from Alfred University, Joe moved to Canisteo to teach 10th grade English in 1976. With the retirement of Mr. Lamb, Joe took on English 11 in 1980, and in 1983 he had part of 1984’s graduating class teaching British Literature. Joe has always been an active member in school activities. Coach Pacanowski headed the J.V. basketball team during the 1975-76 season. and three years later, moved up to varsity coach during the 1981-82 season, leading our Redskins team to many victories. This year Joe decided to tackle a different kind of coaching job, football. Despite a winless season, Joe’s enthusiasm and desire for his team to win was always present. Joe has many hobbies besides coaching. These include hunting, reading, and playing poker. Joe is known throughout the halls of C.C.S. as ”PAC or “the polish pac man”. Joe now resides on Third Street with his wife Patti, and children Brianne, Brett and Stacy. It is with great respect and admiration that the staff of the 1984 Kanistean presents this dedication to Joseph Pacanowski; teacher, coach, and friend. IN APPRECIATION The staff of the 1984 Kanislcan would like to thank John Heaslip for dedicating 31 years to our school. Mr. Heaslip earned his B.S. and Masters degree in education at Syracuse University in 1949 and '52. After teaching two years in Roxbury, N. Y., he came to Canistco. He and his wife Patricia have two sons, Stephen and John. Mr. Heaslip has been a very helpful and caring guidance counselor, whom we shall never forget. Mrs. Jean Pearson former president and member of the Canisleo Board of Education is remembered for her fine service to the school. Jean was bom in Fort Plain, N.Y. She attended St. Lawerence University. In 1952 she joined the United States Air Force and four years later she completed her tour of duty and married Ken Pearson. She and Ken have two daughters. Mrs. Pearson is presently working for the New York State Electric and Gas Company as a supervisor and meter reader. She has been a member of the board for eight years and president for six. We would like to thank her for her many contributions to C.C.S. We would also like to express our gratitude to Paul Thurkins. Mr. Thurkins graduated from Derry Township High School, and St. Vincent's College in Latrobe. Pennsylvania. He did graduate work at Eastman School of Music. Ithaca College, and Elmira College. Mr. Thurkins taught at Lyons Central School before coming to Canisteo. He is also the father of three boys and a girl. Our school is not only losing an excellent music instructor and orchestra conductor, but a kind and caring friend. vV 5 face the world. Our careers are in the planning stage. In the search for appropriate occupations, we have had to learn about ourselves, and those around us. We have begun to realize that trials and triumphs are all part of the climb up the ladder of success. We've learned that everyone has to work willingly to attain their goal. These have been trying times, times of fun and times of hard work. All of the experiences we have had, and the ones yet to come, will contribute to the success in our roles as mature, responsible men and women - the hope of tomorrow. Although we have descended from the recent Canisteo tradition of winning football, we hold the promise of returning to those victorious times. We have gained experience this year by playing many younger players throughout the season. In fact, a Canisteo school record was established when sophomore Bryan Speed went 93 yards for a touchdown against Perry. The experience gained by young players and their positive attitude (despite the dismal record) will hopefully boost us back to a winning tradition in 1984 1985. Many thanks to the coaching staff and especially the players for not giving up altogether and for giving me many bright spots to look forward to. Sincerely, Coach Pacanowski. The team ended the season with 3 wins 11 loses and 2 ties. The record is no indication of how 18 players were eventually molded into a team. The season ended on a high note as undefeated Addison was defeated, 1-0, by Canisteo in a super effort from all players. Karen Klindt, better known as “Killer’’, is the only senior on the team this year. Karen’s graduation will leave a big gap defensively on the Held as well as her team leadership, determination, aggressiveness, love and appreciation for the game of soccer. She will be missed by all who have played with her. Next season appears to be promising as a talented group of juniors return who made their presence felt through out the league. Juniors led by Michelle Erklenz, Mary Anne Drake, Dyan Preston, and Peggy Koch accounted for 18 of the teams 22 scores. Junior goalies Debbie Howell and Rhonda Holmes were outstanding keepers by the end of the season. Due to the youth of the team, underclassmen played a great deal, receiving invaluable experience which will make them especially tough in future years. Defensively the team became stingier in each successive game. Juniors Page Bangs, Steffanie Malteson, Shelley Stanford, and 8th grader Becky Griswold improved immensely with each game. Midfielders Val Sharp, Lisa Moran, and Michele O'Brien created problems for other teams this year. The line looks to be quick and explosive with the likes of sophomore Kim Swanson, freshman and Jodi Ives, 8th grader Donna Tingley, and 7th grader Colleen Speed. Look coach, no hands! Although they did not win a game, they did show improvement throughout the season. The defense proved to be the strong point of the team in the later part of the season, with Steve and Roy Woodworth, Chris Davis, and Ervin Dicus leading the team. MOMENTS OF GLORY Row I: M. Lewis. P Kelley, J. Tolan, J. Herrington. A. Kendall, J. Knapp, J. Loper, B. Knapp. The J. V. soccer team had a lough year, winning only one game. The squad, however, was a very young, inexperienced one. Despite the poor record, the team members all had individual moments of glory. Theresa CartcUa and Mcllissa Hoare tied for most goals scored. Mamie Woehr and Linda Tarantino will be remembered for their great offensive play. Outstanding defensive players were Dorcy McChes- ney, Lori Herrington, and Roxana Davis. Next year, with everyone returning, the team hopes to turn its record around. BOUNCING BUCKETEERS Row 1: M Adam, K. Baier, Coach Pacanowski, T. Dietrich, B. Houghtaling, M. Davis. Row 2: J. Richardson, R. Mullen, E. Wochr, C. Garner, B. Allen, S. House, P. Ambuski. We began Redskin Basketball for 1983-1984 with a very inexperienced team. We closed out the year with two come from behind wins and a disappointingly close loss to Keshcqua in the first round of the sectionals. Our season record was 4-15. A single game high in scoring came from senior Pete Ambuski, against Avoca, when he scored 30 points. The top overall scorers for the year were Jay Richardson, Keith Baier and Tom Dietrich, all arc juniors. Richardson was also the teams leading defensive player. Sophomore Brad Houghtaling along with Richardson, led the team in rebounding throughout the year. Many thanks and much appreciation go to the 6th man” Shawn House, for his hard work throughout the year. Special thanks go to seniors - Mike Adam, Eric Woehr, and Robbie Mullen; junior - Bryan Allen; sophomore - Clark Garner for their hard work and dedication to Basketball. HOOPSTERS Row 1: M Davis. L. Moran. K Swanson. Row 2: Coach Dinccn, D. Johnson. K Klindt, L. Herington, N. Markham M Hoare. M. Erklcnz. The Girls Varsity Basketball teams record of 1-17 would suggest a very disappointing season. There were, however, some bright spots which makes next years campaign look quite promising. The loss of Sherry Bettinger (prior to the season) and Nancy Markham to injuries was a big setback for the Redskins. Kim Swanson and Lisa Moran did an excellent job Tilling in for Nancy at point guard. Karen Klindt, who played very well all season, will be lost to graduation. It will be difficult to replace her. However, Michelle Erklenz, who led the team in scoring, will return next year as a senior. Perhaps the greatest asset the girls showed all season was a positive attitude. Not once through this long season did they show signs of quitting. This is a quality which will serve them well not only next year but beyond. 78 PADDLE PUSHERS Row I: C. Ells, B. Miller, A. DuBois, D. Hercath. Row 2: M. Broil, K. Cassidy, E. Hammond, W. Mulhair, Coach Roser, F. Klindt. Row 3: S. Miller, E. Salvagin, L. Moran, J. Young. The swim team ended their season with a 5-10 record. Outstanding performances were put in by many team members. Fred Klindt led the way setting 2 more school records in the 50 and 200 freestyle events. Fred ended his career with 5 school records, an individual record of 71 first places, 13 second places, and 0 third places. In this year’s sectionals Fred took two thirds. Jeff Young was a big surprise as he changed events and became the team’s IM’er and backstroker. Jeff improved all season with many come from behind victories to an outstanding 4th place finish in the sectionals. Other seniors were Dan Kelley in the diving, who finished 3rd in the county meet; Laurie Moran and Scott Miller became valuable freestyle specialists as the season progressed. The underclassmen were led by sophomore Wayne Mulhair, who became very tough in the 200 and 100 freestyle events; and juniors Ed Salvagin and Libby Hammond in the sprints and specialty events respectively. The future rests in the hands of very young talent coming out of the grades. Kyle Cassidy looks to become an exceptional breaststroke-specialist along with 7th grader Mike Brott in the diving. With other talent coming from the grades next year, the future looks great. 80 MA TMEN Row I: D Greenfield. B Stewart. P Doone. T. Zinck, R Pierce. M. Davis, T. Crook. Row 2: T. Wilkins. G. Haleti. Also returning next year will be Greg Flint, Jim Tingley, Dave Preston, and Trail Mullins. Phil Cali, who led the team in rebounding and defense and was the teams leader, will be moving up to varsity along with Eric Hosmer and Rich Farrand. DYNAMIC DRIBBLERS Row I: B. Morse. Row 2: J. The girls featured both balanced scoring and pressure defense. It is hard to point out just one person on this team so it is best to just mention them as a whole. The team was lead by a strong starting five of Nicolle Pfitzenmaier, Colleen Speed, Pam Ray, Donna Tingley, and Jodi Ives. They also received strong support from Tracy Ryan, Bridget Morse, Jill Tolan and Cindy Mullen. The young team featuring I seventh grader, 6 eighth graders, 1 freshman, and 1 sophomore, shows a team of great promise in the future of Girls basketball at C.C.S. PAR 18 Row I: S. Krishcr. J. Baicr. The Redskins defeated Cat-Mum (9-2), Dundce(5-0), and Marion (4-1) to reach the finals and a 16-3 season record. Seniors Mark Ahearn, Bob Dietrich, Bob Drake, Joe Flint, Scott McKibben, and Steve Smith ended their 3-year varsity career at 50-10. This years team will be graduating eight ballplayers, the majority of which have played together for four years and have been highly skilled and productive. The 1983-84 squad will be left with only three returning starters, but many eager new faces. We will miss the experience and ability of those who are graduating and at the same time we look forward with great enthusiasm to the talent and determina- tion of our young new squad. Due to a low number of turnouts, the 1983 track season had a disappointing dual meet season going 0-7. Despite the low numbers of runners, there were many outstanding athletes making the season very exciting. County champs were Jim Galatio in the shot and discus, setting new meet records in both events; Scott Woodworth, Andy Schultz, Rich Donnelly, and Dave Combs combined talents to take the 3200 M Relay, and just miss the 1600 M Relay by lOOths of a second, they were 4th in the sectionals; Scott also took the 1600 M run, and Dave also won the 800 M run. and was 3rd in the sectionals; Scott Miller took the 3200 M run while Curt Mulhollcn was 1st in the high jump. Despite losing many valuable seniors, next year looks very promising with a large turnout expected by the Freshmen. Underclassmen Fred Klindt, Scott Miller, Eric Woehr, Rick Salvagin, and Ed Salvagin will make things happen on next years team as well. Seniors Jim Galatio, Rich Donnelly, Dave Combs, Scott Woodworth. Mindy Alexander as Snow White and Susan Shaver as the wicked queen portray their jealous rivalry, as the mirror with its quick and witty tongue antagonizes the Queen. The story, narrated by senior Chris Clarke, unfolds to show that the dwarfs are really a rock band and that the woodsman is really a boyscout. Other members of the cast include Sterling Barnes, Marty Oakes and Bill Strope. 118 Come Out, Come Out wherever you are . . . CAST Queen ......... Snow White .... Woodsman ...... Doctor ........ She is a typical housewife who is experiencing communica- tion difficulties with her family, who just makes demands on her and show no affection. She decides to visit her doctor and nurse to seek advice, only to find that they too have communication problems. Hilarious situations arise from dialogue between characters who do not listen to each other. The cast included Mary Ann Cooney as Marge Brown, Francis Manroe as the doctor, Carla Brotzman as the nurse, and Eric Woehr, Laurie Moran, and Chris Clarke as the Brown family. It should represent the school, its administration, the faculty and staff, and the community. It is the hope of the yearbook staff that the 1984 Kanistean proudly reflects our school and our community. We can be extremely proud of this year's editors: Karen Klindt and Laurie Moran and their staff for a job well done. We believe that you will find this yearbook to be innovative, creative, and truly a tribute to all who are a part of the Canisteo School District. A special word of thanks to Mr. Hackemer for assuming the role of Business Manager for the yearbook and for his interest and concern in helping us meet the cost of publishing it. Canisteo Central School is indeed a school to be proud of and we trust that the 1984 Kanistean will reinforce school pride and enthusiasm for years to come.
