1983 KANISTEAN CANISTEO CENTRAL SCHOOL Canisteo, New York Look what Jason and Dave got me. We, the staff of the 1983 Kanistean, are honored to dedicate the yearbook to one of Canisteo’s finest science teachers, George Tubbs. In his years at C. C. S., he has taught Biology, Chemistry, and Physics with the conviction that his students would learn the material, whether we wanted to or not. This devoted teacher will long be remembered for his quick wit and discussions on life. Mr. Tubbs graduated from Elkland High School, Pennsylvania, where he had been active in baseball and basketball. He graduated from Mansfield State College in 1954, after majoring in science. Upon entering the service, Mr. Tubbs was stationed in Korea as an interpreter for the United States. In addition to his school activities as teacher and ninth-grade advisor, Mr. Tubbs devotes his time to hunting, fishing, the store, and his family. He resides on a farm in Elkland with his wife, Grazia, and sons, David and Jason. It is with great respect and regard that we name Mr. George Tubbs as our dedicatee. DEDICATION Row X: Asst. The 1982 Varsity Baseball team ended its season with a record of 20-1, and won Canisteo’s first-ever sectional baseball championship. The Redskins defeated defending Class B champion, Geneseo, 10-0, in the pre-quarter-finals, then took Clyde-Savannah, 3-2, in eight innings, in the quarter-finals. The team qualified to play in Silver Stadium with a 4-2 victory over Oakfield-Alabama. Canisteo then captured the Section V Class B crown after defeating Kendall, 1-0, in ten innings of excitement packed baseball. Seniors, Mickey Ahearn, Andy Bertch, and Tom McDaniels, will be missed next year, but the 1983 season promises to repeat the 1982 season, with 12 veterans returning. The Kanistean takes pride in dedicating these pages to the Section V championship team and Coach Mike Dineen. They tied for the Livingston County Division II League Championship with Elba and Warsaw. The Redskins were tied for the third spot in sectional points with three other teams but failed to make one of the sectional spots when the Harbin point system was used to break the tie. Although disappointed at not making the sectionals, they did get some satisfaction knowing that they had beaten the Sectional Champs (Elba) 22-6 during the regular season. With 2 returners from last season, Page Bangs and Karen Knight, (after losing Michelle Brown to injury) add 10 more very young and inexperienced players and we came up with a team that played with a lot of heart and determination. We improved our record over last year by ending with a 3 - 9 - 2 record. The highlight of our season was a 2 - 1 win over Addison with Theresa Cartella scoring a hat trick. VARSITY SOCCER Row 1: T. Coach: C. Roser. The soccer team ended this season with 6 wins and 10 losses, a big improvement over last year’s record, but disappointing for the talent on the team. Seven of the 10 losses were by only 1 point; excellent defense was the team’s hallmark. Highlights of the 82-83 season were defeating Addison 1 - 0 , who went undefeated the rest of the season and became Class A sectional champs, participating, for the first time, in 2 night games (Bath Wellsville), and playing A-A for the county B championship, in which we were defeated 2-0. The talents of seniors Debbie Baker, Betsy Bergh, Tracy Gaskin, Jenny Hollenbeck, Dawn Preston, and Jana Testani will be greatly missed. Tracy, Jenny, and Dawn, this year’s captains were the team’s inspirational leaders, having been varsity team members for the past 5 years. Next year’s team will find some tough going to fill the shoes of the seniors; but with most of the starting line returning and the core of defense returning, next year should prove to be an exciting and productive year. 94 Coach Roser thinking of a way to win. CROSS COUNTRY pant, pant Row 1: Miss Wiseman • coach, B. Wilkins. M. Guinane. S. Miller, E. Woehr, D. Combs. P. Ambuski. Row 2: P. Cali, S. House. This year the cross-country team got off to a late start and couldn’t compete until later in the season. But once running competitively, the group strove to do their very best while on the course and set personal records. Each meet was full of excitement and it was thrilling to watch these athletes improve throughout the season. We are looking forward to the ’83 season. 96 VOLLEYBALL Row 1: L. Moran, K. Firestine. This year the girls had the opportunity to compete at the varsity level in volleyball. Starting six years behind the other schools in the county, we found that this is a sport that does not come easy. Each skill is so specialized that it takes nearly three years to build a team with those skills. We tried to condense those three years into three weeks. The frustrations, tears, broken glasses, and bruises resulted in many joyous moments. The successful serves, power spikes, blocking an opposing spike, “diggins” the spike before it hits the floor and even those intense” volleys were enough to have other teams be impressed. But the ultimate pleasure was to be able to face these schools in the county to play all five games before taking the match. Matches were: Addison: MS, 16-14. 15-13, 8-15, 5-15 Prattsburg: 15-3. 2-15, 15-22, 6-15, 11-15 Alfred-Almond: 1-15, 15-11, 4-15. 15-3, 6-15 With a little more time, patience, and hard work, the team will develop into stiff competition. At the J.V. level, the players only play the best two games of three to win the match. Being very young and inexperienced, these players showed that they will be the team in the future to watch out for by winning four of their matches. Teams and scores: Alfred-Almond: 15-4 15-10 Prattsburg: 15-8 15-2 Hammondsport: 15-6 15-3 Jasper: 3-1515- 9 15-2 In a couple of years, with desire, patience, and much practice, these young players could have the ability to be one of the top contenders in the county. The boys’ J.V. basketball team finished the season with a very respectable 10-8 record. In what was supposed to be a down year, they posted a 9-5 league record which was good enough for second place. The team proved to be an exciting one to watch as six games were decided by 2 points or less; two games after the final buzzer on foul shots, and one win in overtime. This year was a true team effort as seven different players led the team in scoring at least once, three players battled down to the final game for top defense, and we out rebounded our opponents by 135 despite being the smallest team in the league. We are losing four sophomores next year (Keith Baier, Jay Richardson, Tom Dietrich, and Bryan Allen) but will return our top scorer (Clark Garner) and our top rebounder (Brad Houghtaling). Phil Cali, Eric Hosmer, and Tom Sawyer will return as well. 99 BOYS’ VARSITY BASKETBALL CAHIST’E UNISTfff1 ANISTEo I SISTEq c N7Sr ’ Row 1: M. Adam, J. Lockwood, S. Smith, B. Drake, S. House, J. It means that nine seniors will graduate, and three juniors will be left to maintain a winning, hard-working attitude. It is with deep appreciation and thanks for many jobs well-done that I wish to say “goodbye” to this fine group of young men. Your “never say die” attitude will always be remembered. Basketball is a team game and everyone contributed: Bob Drake and Joe Flint led the team in scoring for the year. Roy Forshee is no doubt Canisteo’s all time leading rebounder. Steve Smith led the team in defense and assists. Doug Wyant was the leader in field goal percentage and consistency. Special thanks go to Jim Davis, Bob Dietrich, Mark Ahearn, and John Lockwood for their patience and strong support. Bob Dietrich also led the team in free throw percentage. Again, thank you for your hard work and dedication for four years. Shawn, Pete, and Mike - be ready for 1983-1984. Coach Pacanowski VARSITY BASKETBALL CHEERLEADERS Row 1: M. Pratt, M. Drake, J. The final records were 4-2 and 5-6. Despite a season of disappointments the team ended the season competing in sectional play with tremendous enthusiasm and outstanding playing skill. The effort, determination and teamwork that they lacked during the season came on strong and they saw the rewards of their “will to win.” The girls upset 4th place Byrn-Berger (5-2) in round one of sectionals and went on to defeat 5th place Kendal (11-10) in round two. The team lost in semifinals to 1st place Perry (4-3). Next year we will be losing two of our finest players: Deb Preston, centerfielder, was our only graduate: and Theresa Brasted, 2nd baseman, is moving. However, the team expects to have 12 returnees. With the exhilarating effort and attitude being what it was during our last 3 games we anticipate a very effective performance in '83. Although they ended with a perfect 0-6 record, the season was a profitable one. This young team consisted of six sophomores, two freshmen, four eighth graders and three seventh graders, most of whom will return, making 1983’s team stronger and more experienced. 116 TENNIS Row X: Coach Thomas. For most of the season, there were only twelve members on the team. Because of this, the team did not do well in duel meets. Winning only two of seven. However, the boys did very well in individual events at the meets and won the counties by beating Hammondsport 83-50. Individuals did well in the following: Jim Galatio in the shot and discus; Marty Guinane in the high jump and the triple jump; Roy Forshee in the long jump and hurdles; Tim Soper in the 100 and 200 meter runs; Dan Kelley in the Pole vault and 800 meter run; Ken Baker in the hurdles; Rich Donnelly, Jeff Young and Scott Miller in the mile and 2 mile runs; Fred Klindt in the high jump and Randy Amidon in the shot. Jim Galatio was the most outstanding member of the team setting a school record in the discus at 139’8 , breaking his own record from the past season. 119 GOLF Row 1: D. Hackemer, B. Griswold. J. Market 129 STUDENT SENATE The 1982-83 student senate has provided a forum for students to express interest in our school as well as an opportunity to participate in the activities of the senate. Our emphasis this year is three-fold — assistance, service, and spirit. We have provided for school pictures and financial assistance to the yearbook and the National Honor Society. The student senate has also emphasized school spirit. Our Homecoming included a week-long schedule of activities. Each day of the week had a specified theme designed to stimulate student participation and spirit. Unfortunately, we also stimulated the wrath of a few faculty members. With a spirit of cooperation, next year's activities will be designed to offend as few as possible and incorporate the cooperation and skills of many. We have left a file of procedural suggestions for next year’s officers in the hopes the problems of our initiative will not be encountered again. Homecoming week ended with bon-fire festivities on Friday night and halftime ceremonies introducing the Homecoming Queen followed by the Homecoming Dance on Saturday night. Other senate activities have included our most successful spirit hat campaign and the post-basketball party and record hop. Treasurer: K Duncan, President: M. Guinane. Vice President: J. Flint. The first National Honor Society was founded in 1921. Canisteo Central and many other schools quickly followed its precedent. C.C.S.’s 1983 chapter inducted thirteen new members on February 28, 1983. These people were chosen on the basis of their fulfillment in character, leadership, scholarship and service. The Society now consists of twenty-two members. We hope to participate in some area activities. Row 1: G. Bailey, L. Hammond. D. Johnson. D. Wyant. L. Erklenz. Row 2: M. Venter, K. Douglass. K. Coombs. D. Hackemer. Row 3: B. Fountain. K. Baier. B. With a sigh of relief and a sense of nostalgia, the Kanistean staff anxiously awaits the arrival of our finished product. It is our hope, as well as. our belief, that this years book is a reflection of the past and the present, as well as. an inspiration to those who are leaving our midst. The Kanistean would not have been a reality this year without the endeavors of Co • Editors Jennifer Voss and Betsy Bergh. Their leadership, their willingness to work, and all the extra hours that they spent working on the yearbook have not gone unnoticed. A very special thanks to both of these girls for accepting the challenge and for giving their best. On behalf of Betsy. Jennifer and myself, we would like to thank the Board of Education and the Student Senate for their financial help this past year. We also appreciated the moral support of Mr. Hackemer. our high school principal, who has always been ready to lend a helping hand to the yearbook staff. We trust you will enjoy looking through this book for many years to come and treasure the memories within. They believe in free enterprise - in freedom under the law - in making their homes, schools and communities better places in which to live and work. Through active participation in the FFA, members learn by taking part in and conducting meetings, speaking in public, participating in contests based in occupational skills, earning awards and recognition and becoming involved in cooperative efforts and community improvements. The FFA offers the opportunity for achieving a personal goal of becoming productive in our democracy. 136 SKI CLUB Row 1: R. Donnelly, T. LaPointe, J. Baier, B. Congdon, J. Douglass, B. Simons, M.
