r Sports ............................ 89 Underclassmen Activities Seniors Contents I'Lfl Administration PEOPLE-TO-PEOPLE Man’s ability to think and to communicate intelligently elevates him above the simple creatures of the earth. The simple life of the wild beast seems brutal to man, for man is able to resolve con- flicts and to relate peacefully with his brother. The fact that man does not always utilize this power is one of the basic flaws. Nevertheless, we are capable of civilized reaction to occurences that would evoke violence from mere animals. The rewards of communicating can be seen in our own school. There is a feeling of satisfaction when a teacher reaches students and gets across new concepts. There is a similar sense of fulfill- ment when friends have a heart-to-heart talk or when enemies patch up their differences. This year, the 1977 KAN1STEAN hopes to convey these positive feelings and memories: the relation- ships or “people to people”. 3 We are proud to dedicate the 1977 KANISTEAN to a man who has been actively involved with several aspects of Canisteo Central School. After completing his own high school education in Canisteo in 1936, he became an officer in the army, serving for four years during World War II. After the war, he earned his bachelor’s de- gree at the State University College at Geneseo. He returned to Canisteo in 1947 to become a junior high science teacher. At that time he became involved with many extracurricular activities. He has been an advisor to the Student Senate, the Elementary Science Club, and the Future Teachers. He has also coached junior varsity basketball. In the academic field, he served as guidance counselor and elementary principal before being selected for the position of Supervising Principal. He is a man who has been able to combine firmness with fairness and who can find the time to listen to a problem whether it be at the student level, the teacher level, or the community level. We are especially proud to dedicate this yearbook to our District Principal, Mr. James Roach. 4 tration Board Of Education E. Dennis, J. Pearson, President C. Kilmer J. Parker, Qerk 6 M. Meek, A. Moran Congratulations to the Class of 1977 upon reaching this im- portant milestone in your life—Commencement. Your teach- ers and 1 are proud to have been a part of your lives. I would like to say something about our aspirations for you. Though riches and power are a part of life and deserved by those who earn them and do not abuse them, we have other more basic aspirations for you. We hope that you will have the oppor- tunity to develop your talents—and you all have them—to the fullest extent. At the same time we hope that you will develop a sensitivity to the needs of others—a social con- science. Through this process, you will experience success and failure and profit from both. Best wishes! Robert C. Hammond To the Class of 1977: You will have heard many words of advice in your “growing up” years, and you have doubtlessly found much merit in them. Now there will be a whole array of new experiences, friends, responsibilities—so much to look forward to with pleasure and anticipation. The only advice I would give is to make good memories by choosing carefully the priorities your life will offer and then living it fully and joyfully. James E. Roach Congratulations to the Class of ‘77. While passing through the formative years of your education, you have displayed unusual talents in many fields. I have enjoyed working with you as you have grown, both in stature and in academic abi- lity. Now it is time for you to make your mark in today’s challenging society. Best wishes to each of you as you pass from CCS to new areas of endeavor. 7 Nelson Mullen C. Griffith K. Bossard Secretaries D. VanFleet P. Ferree B. Jones Row 1: M. Young, M. Chura. Row 2: L. The theme, People- to-People, is reflected not only in design but also in CCS students as well. With so many involved in its production, 1 can only say one big thank you to all for your time. An ex- tra big thank you goes to Mrs. Beckerink for sharing count- less headaches and also by making this yearbook entirely possible. April Johnson E D I T 0 R S As one of the editors of the 1977 KANISTEAN, I felt as though I had married the yearbook. When the planning of the book first started, we started working “from this day forward.” No matter how good or how bad the ideas, pic- tures and other aspects of constructing the yearbook were, we kept working. Whether we had five dollars or five-thou- sand dollars in the bank made no difference in our effort to complete the KANISTEAN. We worked no matter if we had a high temperature, a cold, or felt fine. We do not part with the 1977 KANISTEAN until it is completed and ready to go out into the community. Even then there are still mem- ories of these marriage vows in my mind. I want to thank the staff and especially Mrs. Beckerink for their help. Bonnie Smith This last year of high school has been a busy one. But the most interesting thing has been working on the KANIS- TEAN. No matter how tough it has been, it was a great learning experience. It has been hard meeting all the dead- lines and doing all the little things that have to be done be- fore the yearbook can go out. With the great staff and ad- visor we have had, we hope the ‘77 KANISTEAN will be a success. Considering all the time and effort everyone has contributed to this year’s book, it should be! I would like to give a special thank you to the one and only advisor, Mrs. Beckerink. Without her help and encouragement the year- book would never have been possible.
