Text from Pages 1 - 96 of the 1953 volume:

FORWARD Now, approaching graduation, the class of 1953 feels both sadness and humility—sadness because we are leaving all these good times and wonderful friends, and humility because we realize what a tiny part of this huge world we are. At times, each of us has felt discouraged and overburdened with the responsibilities of high school years. However, uniting our efforts, we have tried to make this book, a record of the past four years, represent the cherished memories gained at C. C. S. We sincerely hope that you will enjoy it. ALMA MATER Oh, chant out the song of C.A. Sing the glory that is ners today. The triumph of might against might Tells whicn color wins tne fight. Oh, long may her great emblem wave 'Tis the symbol of the staunch, the true, the brave, The Red and the White may they wave Victorious, victorious, o'er us forever. Though far o'er this world we may stray We shall never forget old C.A. The scenes that today we hold dear Shall come back to us through the years. Oh, long may her great emblem wave 'Tis the symbol of the staunch, the true, the brave, The Red and the White may they wave Victorious, victorious, o'er us forever. 2 DEDICATION We the class of 1953 bestow these dedications as special honors upon those whose wise forsights, sound reasoniy and untiring efforts made our visions into realities. To Carrie Conklin, beloved teacher and friend, the class of 1953 expresses its deep felt gratitude for the guidance and training which you have so willing- ly given. Your kindly advice and sweet ways will be remembered by us all. To Matthew Salisbury, whose infectious smile, pleasing personality, and kindly, yet stern assistance has helped to make our high school days more success- ful and happy. We, the members of the Senior Class of 1953, wish to show our heartfelt appreciation. CLASS POEM Dear Freshmen: Welcome, Freshmen to Senior High, No more time for days gone by. And though you may be considered small, We promise you’ll soon be Seniors tall. If you work hard, you'll reach your goal; After all, we were Freshmen once you know. Dear Sophomores: Sophomore friend you're getting older, But that's no sign of getting bolder. Remember always your Sophomore Hop, Because in memory it’ll be on top. All these things, and many more. Will pass you through the Sophomore door. Dear Juniors: Gosh, you've almost reached the door As the senior class of fifty-four. Though these days will come and go Faster than you will ever know. We wish all the luck you may possess From these wonderful Halls of C. C. S. Dear Teachers: To the kindest, most understanding people we know, We're sorry to say we have to go. But when in memory we’ve returned, We'll realize how much we have learned From you who taught us and you yourselves With little use of the books on the shelves. Dear Classmate: There is a saying which everyone knows. And this is similar to the way it goes; Time has come when friends must part, We all must admit, it touches the heart. And with these many days gone by To some it means tears, to others a sigh. Oh! there are many things I wish to say. But gosh, it would really take all day. So here's to all the fun we've had. And even the time we all were bad. The very best in all vou do, Remember your Alma Mater true. Now, as I wish you all a so-long, My heart will ring out the old school song. And may I be bold enough to say, We’re not little lambs wrro have lost our way. 6 Jay Abbott Jay ... all around athlete... crew cut... ladies man. Because of its changes of class don't you know. We soon learned to study and not to waste time For they had detention to keep us in line. Those two years of labor were not spent in vain For the basis of High School was thoroughly laid. Soon after starting our first High School year We chose those for office who worked in high gear. Jay Abbott was President to conduct the large class Don Merring took Vice to sub for the Pres. Gloria Allen took notes on the meetings John Schnurle balanced the books in high rating. Activities followed, one after the other With parties, a supper, and bake sales, Oh brother! We won the banner for the Holly Hanging And took much pride to see what our work did bring. The Summer had passed and we did return To find as Sophomores just what we could learn. Tim was more precious we found to be true So again we bore down to see what we could do. Again our election of officers came With which we took a great deal of pains. Jay Abbott won the Presidency John Schnurle the Vice-Presidency. Natalie Brasted was Secretary Pat Beaver took care of the Treasury. Plans that were made for the Sophomore Hop Astoundingly worked and we came out on top. We had the hall duty as bright Sophomores One step at a time! Slow in corridores! Surprisingly swift that school year did pass With promotions excepting a lad or a lass. Summer had come and speedily gone Back to school ana to knowledge did pawn. Jay Abbott, Jane Tyler were Pres, and Vice-Pres. Arlyce Ives, Elden Dennis were Secy, and Treas. The first large activity of our Junior tea Was Christmas card selling with Stationery. November 16 was our Junior Dance Where no one who went would leave it to chance. The summer vacation was next of the list But we came back to school and into the mist. Time had to be taken to select a new list Elden Dennis is Pres. Herb Peterson Vice-Pres. Lois Pierce and James Gillis Secy, and Treas., how nice. The Senior play, Green Valley, you know Was as successful as our three one-act shows. The next was to test our salesmanship With magazines we were cracking the whip. The painstaking job of compiling the year book Took patience with work which we never forsook. Washington looks but a little way off And then Graduation, to some, far enough. 17 STUDENT ACTIVITIES NITA MURRAY Orchestra 1, 2,3,4 Chorus 1, 3,4 All State Orchest. 2, 3 Local Hon.
