4 USS C ' t A0 99 Modern concepts of sea power have changed little from the days of the Greek and Roman . . Empires, security at home depends on strength at sea. Thus, the United States and her allies maintain strong navies. The primary advantage of a Navy as a fighting force is it's mobility. The ,A-stask force, then, must be able to sustain itself until it has gained it's objective. ' It is at this point the CANISTEO enters the scene. She carries no big guns, no supersonic aircraft and no guided missiles, but she carries the fuel and supplies necessary to give the fighting units their big advantage MOBILITY ,

l 3 I'I . i I S S 0 r G O DID YCU KNGW? IN 1971 CANISTEO WAS lN VALLETA, MALTA? While deployed with the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean CANISTEO again proved that in the Service Force Atlantic there is no such thing as a single purpose ship. - To commemorate the 87th birthday of the Archbishop of Malta, Monsignor Michael Gonzi, CANISTEO was asked to transport a life-size statue of the revered holy man from Naples, Italy to Valleta, Malta, where it was to be placed with those of past archbishops in the Cathedral Church of Malta. Monsignor Gonzi has been archbishop of Malta since its raising to the status of a metropolitan! archdiocese 25 years ago. Few archbishops have held similar office for this length of time and through such difficult periods of peace and war, Captain George R. Parish jr., CANISTEO'S commanding officer, was received by the archbishop and thanked for his kindness in delivering the statue. I ,.,,g f -'Q' 1 - iv ., .
