Commanding Officer Canisteo, Arriving - To those unfamiliar with Navy terminology, this is the traditional announcement of a Commanding Officer's arrival, and it symbolizes the prestige and responsibility which he accepts with his Command at Sea insignia. For in achieving his primary mission - his ship's battle readiness a Captain must deal with, and is accountable for every facet of life aboard a Navy ship. The tradition is no empty ceremony, to a large extent, the Captain is the ship. Since October 9th, 1981, Canisteo has been Captain Richard E. Allsopp. Captain Allsopp is a native of Huntington, Long Island, New York. He was graduated from Robert L. Simpson High School in 1952 and Palmer College in 1956. He entered the Navy later the same year and commenced flight training in April 1957. Upon receipt of his Wings in October 1958, Captain Allsopp reported to Patrol Squadron Forty- Four in Norfolk, Virginia, then flying the PSM Martin Marlin. In May, 1961, he returned to civilian life retaining his military affiliation by flying with VR-834, a reserve transport squadron operating the C-54 Skymaster. In November, 1962, with the advent of the Cuban Crisis, he was voluntary recalled to active duty and was ordered to report to Naval Station Trinidad, West Indies, where he served as Port Control Officer, while flying the HU-16 Albatross on Search and Rescue Missions in the Southern Caribbean. Following this tour, he reported to VT-27 in Corpus Christi, Texas, where he served as a flight instructor and NATOPS Standardization Officer. He then reported to Air Antisubmarine Squadron Thirty One CVS-313 onboard USS WASP where he served first as Squadron Administrative Officer and then Operations Officer. Upon' completion of this tour with VS-31, Captain Allsopp was assigned to VS-30 where he served as Assistant Maintenance Officer and FRAMP Department Head. ln the fall of 1971, he reported to the staff of Commander Anti-Submarine Warfare Group TWO in USS WASP as Air Operations and CIC Officer. With the decommissioning of WASP and its ASW Group, Captain Allsopp transferred to ASW Group FOUR in USS INTREPID in the same billet. In May 1973, Captain Allsopp reported as Executive Officer of VS-28, then onboard USS INDEPENDENCE, and in August of 1973 assumed Command of this squadron. Following this tour and a brief period of temporary assignment, he reported, in March 1976, to USS IOHN F. KENNEDY as Navigator. In june 1978 he -reported to the Carrier Programs Division in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations as Program Coordinator for the CVV Medium Sized Aircraft Carrier. Captain'Allsopp is married to the former Rosemary Caprio of Norfolk, Va, where they now reside. Captain and Mrs. Allsopp's two children are both students at the University of Florida. 1, .-. .1 .1-,f
