I ' b N hi is called upon to perform at sea, the task of refueling and replenishment is Basically, replenishment is a simple procedure. Lines are passed, fuel hoses and cargo rigs are sent over, and the oil or stores are transferred to the receiving ship. This simplicity, however masks the tremendous amount of preparation and attention to detail that goes into each replenishment operation. Oil has to be kept at a certain temperature, types of fuel to be transferred must be determined, all stores must be broken out and palletized, inspected, emergency breakaway equipment must be on station. ln addition, a great deal of training is necessary, particulary in such vital positions as the helmsman, rig captain, signalmen and winch operators. Once the Span is attached to the receiving ship it is tensioned, forming a taut line upon which either a fuel hose or cargo will ride. After completion of the replenishment the rigs are returned to CANISTEO, and she prepares for the next ship.
