USS CANISTEO is many things to many people. To the sailor first reporting aboard, she is often a name mispronounced. To the worker at Craney Island Fuel Depot, she is just another ship to be loaded. To the destroyer riding high and rough, she is the ship showing hull down on the horizon, ready to supply fuel, to bring mail from home, to exchange movies and a friendly greeting in the middle of the sea. To the officers and men who serve on her, she is our home for a good part of the time, with all the happiness, sorrow, peace, and satisfaction that any home offers. She requires our working many long hours on the rigs to the methodical rhythm of the smoking lamp is out while transferring fuel . But when the combatants shove off smartly, we know that althoughwe fire no rockets, nor launch missiles, nor carry aircraft, we are an indespensable member of the United States Navy. ' I3 I
