Their hands- competent and willinggled us over a course filled with ideals and experiences that can never be discovered in any book. The course was not a new oneg four hundred years have elapsed since a man named Ignatius first charted it and set it down as the basis of Jesuit education in his Ratio Studiorum. But theirs has been the job of casting the bright light of learning on the darkness of our ignorance, inspiring us to grasp it and cherish it in our hearts so that we may pass from the uncertainty of youth to the maturity of manhood. Rector and President of Cani.riu.r High School . .lt The success of an educational institution is determined and should be measured by the quality of its administration and faculty, as well as of its graduates. Student, faculty member, administrator,-at one time or another, the Very Rev. Donald L. Kirsch, SJ., who is now completing his first year as Rector and President of Canisius High School, has borne all three titles. A 1928 graduate of Canisius, he returned as a faculty member in 1944 to the Washington Street school in time to help supervise the move to a more spacious campus. As Assistant Principal in charge of Cani- sius-on-Delaware from 1944-48, Prefect of Discipline from 1948-52, and Principal from 1952-59, he saw the new school increase from its small initial holding to the present block- long rectangle. And as the years passed and times changed, his was the task of expanding the curriculum to meet the demands of a modern world. Sacrificing none of the essen- tials of a justly renowned system of education, he intro- duced new courses and facilities so that Canisius would continue to impart to each student the best possible educa- tion. His vast ex erience in each phase of education at 1180 Delaware enables him to see each individual viewpoint and suits him admirably for his present post. And so, Fr. Kirsch, We the graduates of 1960 who have been privileged to finish our hi h school course as you begin your term as Rector and Presigent dedicate to you this our yearbook, the 1960 ARENA. ll'itlv ll keen irztcrcxr in all pbafar of Canisiuf lzfe, Fr. The incoming freshman is impressed-and not a little overwhelmed-by 1180 Dela- ware, huge halls, new subjects, serious application and discipline, black-robed figures towering over him become the measure of his growth. As freshman year yields to sophomore year, and sophomore year passes to junior year, the Canisius student does not recognize much of a change in himself. But Canisius has gradually ceased to be the strange and has become the familiar. Growth-mentally and spiritually-has kept pace with added inches and deep- ening voice, the boy is becoming a man. Yet, there are other phases of education the school must provide for. The wide range of extracurriculars offered at Canisius indicate the concern of the Jesuit system in developing the entire gamut of human faculties and in developing it to its fullest. Articulate and effective communication through the written and spoken word, a specialized penetration into matters beyond the scope of classroom syllabi, poise and assurance in both formal and informal social contacts, a deeper awareness of and relationship with his Creator,- these are the goals of extracurricular participation. The classroom shows the student how to think and how to get along with his fellow studentsg but hands actually doing and hands helping hands impress the lessons of the class- room more firmly and form the friendships that will be remembered. f ' T 1 I .,933y- its. 1 . wx.: K if . ,mg A , 1 gm .P f . 5vQg, . - J 3' . The ultimate end of the Canisius Sodality is to form Catholic leaders not only now as students, but also, in future years as professional men in all fields. Through a special devotion and consecration to the Blessed Mother, the sodalist is spurred on to seek excellence in all his under- takings. Perhaps this added incentive explains why the sodalist is usually a true Canisius Crusader. The senior sodalists under the direction and guidance of Mr. V. P. McDonough, SJ., are confident they have accomplished their primary goal. But to retain the spirit of the Sodality in the future, Mr. McDonough has launched a program of continuity a plan of continued membership in the Sodality. He has passed the formative years of Sodality life, but the apostolate offers a new challenge in his life as a Sodalist. Fr. F. Reisert, SJ., has introduced thejuniors to the group apostolate currently working at the Veteran's Hospital. Prefect J. Zurek, assisted by Vice-Prefects D. Glauber and T. ' Md Learning by doing is the fundamental aim of the Science Club, here at Canisius. Under the combined direc- tion of Fr. Musselman, SJ., and Mr. Bagnato, SJ., the club offers the students the opportunity to apply theories learned in class to laboratory experimentation. Besides classroom and laboratory work, the club offers its members the oppor- tunity to tour local industrial plants, carrying further the idea of learning by doing . The club also sponsors lectures and demonstrations by local scientists as an aid in the study of science and in the choice of a career. With its projects, lectures, and trips, the club ignites the students' hidden reserve of energy and imagination, which produce the scientists of tomorrow. Front Row: R. Gibran, R, Martin, G. Father Bartlett, SJ., Moderator of this year's squad, deserves much of the credit for the fine showing of Canisius teams. A veteran group of experienced debaters, plus a promising crop of novices, was the formula for suc- cess in this year's round of tournaments and speech festi- vals. The Behrens opened the season with a convincing vic- tory at the Hamilton College Tournament, followed by fine performances at such events as the Jeffersonville and Aqui- nas High School tournaments, the Cortland State College Tournament, and the International Speech Festival at St. Michael's College in Toronto. In addition, a full program of intramural debates provides opportunity for practice in public speaking without the pressure of competition. At Table: Fr. Bartlett, SJ., Moderator, M. Ryan, Ufalrh, D. Perhaps its greatest claim to fame is its major role in the annual Passion Play. Many hours are spent during the weeks of prepara- tion, before the curtain rises on opening night. Scenes have to be built, props and garments, cast in the ancient days of the Old Testament, must be secured. In addition to dramatic productions, the stage crew assists in the presentation ofthe Sodality Union Variety Show, the annual Mother's Club Fashion Show, the Christmas Assembly, and the many dances that are held throughout the year. How much enthusiasm, talent, and skill exist in the high school student along musical lines is not at all apparent until they have been given a chance to sing. Restricting their practice to lunch periods and two afternoons a week, the sixty members of this year's Glee Club have found enjoyment in what we all possess, a liking for music. Under the direction of Fr. Joyce, SJ., they have performed various selections from religious and secular choral music in music festivals and concerts at various local schools as well as at Canisius. The staff combines accuracy, seriousness, and humor in its articles, The Editor-in-Chief is Michael Ryan, with Boh Cole as Managing Editor, and John Walsh as Associate Editor. In charge on the sports section is Dennis Zolnowski. The staff of reporters is bossed by Jerry Hajduk. When the articles are finished, the typing staff takes over, while another group furnishes the visual touch. When the printer returns the finished copies, the exchange staff takes care of distributing the Citadel. All of these staffs are under the direct supervision of the Moderator of the Citadel, Mr. Donald Ahruzzo, SJ., under whose watchful eye a well organized staff puts out a well written newspaper. The literary publication of Canisius High School is the Arena magazine. This magazine provides an outlet for the literature and essays of Canisius students. The articles vary throughout the magazine: those who write fiction come up with articles that are sometimes humorous, sometimes in- triguing, always interesting, others choose non-fiction from science to segregation. This year the Arena inaugurated a new look -a photo essay for each issue, a college article, and an interview with a well-known local figure. Also in- cluded in this new look is much more in the line of photographs and drawings. Weekly writing seminars are held to help those interested to improve their literary talents. Early in February of this year a Creative Writing Workshop was held at Canisius, composed of students from area high schools. The staff of the Arena Magazine is headed by Editor-in-Chief Brian McGrath, assisted by Alfred Culliton, Edmund Filipowicz, Richard Kuczkowski, John Brosnan, and a long list of very capable writers, proof- readers, typists, artists, photographers, and the business staff. The 1960 ARENA Yearbook was born on a September afternoon in a second floor oflice in Berchman's Hall, when a small group of aspiring workers assembled to plan the production of the annual publication. Though we could hardly be called veterans in the yearbook business, we made up in enthusiasm what we lacked in experience, and under the capable guidance of our moderator, Mr. Peter Ros- lovich, SJ., we were soon on our way to becoming an ellicient staff. Co-Editors George Hezel and Frank DePeters, assisted by hard-working Associate Editor Maurice Fur- long, drafted a staff. Work was begun immediately. With the dummy prepared, there came many jobs such as plan- ning the cover, text, and pictures, but with perseverance, we finally had the foundation laid. Then came the rough spots. Working out the theme through text and pictures in the introduction, divider pages, and epilogue occupied the editors for weeks. And many a staff member put in anxious hours setting down on paper the gist about C.H.S. activi- ties. The modcrator's red pencil-fsometimes demanding, sometimes encouraging, but always helpfulfpushed us through. Pictures were a problem, and for these we are grateful to the sophomores and freshmen who constitute our photographic staff as well as to Mr. James McGee of Varden Studios, when these had to be supplemented, the moderator would fall back on his simplified live minute course in the unsimpliliable intricacies of focus, f-stop, and guide numbers and send us out to get our own snaps. We must confess, though, that our faultering eHorts no doubt caused Mr. William Sloane of Baker, Jones, 8a Hausauer to look forward to our consignments of material with dread. He gave us no indication that such was the case, but we are convinced that it was his patience, equanimity, and un- rullled competence that produced the 1960 ARENA, almost in spite of our messy, haphazardvthough enthusiastic- efforts. At any rate, the day has at last arrived. We watch your faces as you page through our book4ours, because of the ideas and ideals as well as the time and effort we put into it. But it is really your book, not iust because of the support you gave it but more because it is the story of how you spent the past year or years at Canisius. We hope that now and in the future, this 1960 ARENA will serve as a symbol and as a reminder of what Canisius will always mean to you. The edztarr had their hmdf together. Q Q E As the liason between the faculty and the student body, the Student Council attempts to unite the various classes and school organizations in collective support of the larger interests and purposes of the school as a whole. It therefore serves as both an advisory board and a unifying agent in support of all school activities, as well as in seeking to in- spire and foster school spirit in every student. To achieve these ends, the Council draws its membership from each club and activity, thus enabling every student to have a voice in his representative body. At class meetings, the students relate and discuss their opinions and ideas on topics of school interest, which their representatives then bring to the Council meetings. Here matters are discussed, voted upon, and, if need be, brought to the attention of the school administration. With the essential element of co-operation -the co-operation of every student-the Student Council can and must be the most important organization in the school. Trcafurzr' Georg: Heqel, Modmztar Fr. In the opening game of the season, Canisius faced the Red Rapideers of Duffy, the defending co-champions ofthe Catholic League. The Redmen held a 13 point lead near the end of the first half. Coach Barnes sent end Dick Peer into the game. Vic DiMartina faded back and heaved a long pass, Peer snagged it and dashed into the end zone to score on an 86 yard play. Duffy led at half-time, 13-6. With play resumed, the Rapideers scored minutes after the kickoff. But the Crusaders whittled the lead to 19-12 when Kirk Kuhl- mann crashed off-tackle to pay dirt. Seconds later John Novvicki recovered a Redman fumble on the Duffy 46 yard line, and Dick Wachter, shook loose by guard Ben Randle's key block, sprinted around left end and raced all the way. The ball exchanged hands mauv times during the final quarter until Duffy recovered a fumble on the Canisius 18 and scored with less than three minutes to go. Ar l taking one more on an intercepted pass, the Redmen from the Falls won the game 32-19. The Duffy game, a thrilling debut to the Blue and Gold, seemed a mere defeat to Timon, the Greenmen expected little trouble from Canisius. But the Crusaders ground out 71 yards in the second quarter to score and lead the Tigers 7-O at the half. The ball then traded hands with neither team able to penetrate the other's strong defensive line. In the closing minutes, the Timon Tigers fought their way to a first down on the Canisius 4 yard line, only to be held by Captain guard Sonny LaTona and a determined Canisius line. Under the direction of Fr. Sturm, SJ., a vigorous intramural program in hasehall, swimming, volleyhall, haskethall, tennis, ping-pong, and howling, at- tracts those students whom time or ahility prevents from competing on the varsity level. During lunch hour and after school each day class meets class to determine year, divi- sion, and school winners of the coveted hlue hanners. Though other activities come and go and other sports have oil'-seasons, the variety and enthusiastic support of intra- murals at Canisius will always rival that of any school in Bullialo or elsewhere. Promoting events with eye-catching posters, remintling you that you hayen't purchaser! your ticket, keeping you informed as the game progresses, antl channeling your enthusiasm in ortlerly cheers are their joh. Working untler the guidance of Mr. Ciarriero, Sul., they have contrihutecl greatly to stutlent support ol' athletic contests. What four years ago seemed an almost unattainable goal is now upon us. We were then shy freshmen. Now we are about to graduate. Senior year has brought us new experi- ences and mixed emotions. There has been a certain pride in being fourth year men, in having successfully weathered the three lower grades. And yet, a twinge of sadness comes with the realization that our life at Canisius is soon to come to an end. We experience these opposed emotions as we look back over the past in our memories-pleasant, pointed by the joy and enthusiasm of youth--and then ahead, to graduation and college life. These past four years We see as a period in'which we have become an integral part of Crusader life, enjoying its triumphs and sharing its short- comings when the opponent proved to be the better man. We feel more than ever the knowledge and confidence that have been instilled in us, sometimes in spite of ourselvesg and we can face our lives ahead, for these qualities have become part of us. Graduation marks the end of a beginning, but a beginning that must serve us well for the years to comeg the instruction and formation of the past four years must now be applied to the stern and unyielding realities of living itself. The experi- enced hands that have guided our struggles and steadied our faulterings will no longer cushion our failings. God grant that the moral, intellectual, and physical growth which prospered under their Care may continue. God give us the grace to become the mature Christian gentlemen they have trained us to be. Yet regardless of what lies in the un- charted future, Canisius has become such a part of us that no small measure of our hearts and affections will remain in these hallowed halls after we are gone. ig 1 . 2 1. 1 I., ..... -.f-.WH .ada-u'M,.-:aa 1.-, --, .v ln, Q 0 NW 1 I afram The Editors and Moderator of the 1960 Arena yearbook would like to express their gratitude to all who have supported our production in this generous manner.
