Ss n X fg vw' ' xi f Sl ,533 Cx fllllilllllllll From the earliest centuries of Christianity, jesus Christ Our Lord, Son of the Eternal Father and Savior of Mankind, has always been symbolically repre- sented in art. The Christians of the nascent Church had something dynamic and world-embracing-something completely new-to say, and they said it graphically for the first time on the walls of the Roman Catacombs. There, amidst the blood of its early martyrs, the art of the Catholic Church was cradled. Delineated upon those walls, we see the beliefs and hopes of the primitive community. And what did those early Christians believe? With wholehearted conviction, they accepted the astounding fact that God Him- self became man in order that men might become godlike-sons of the living and Eternal Father, heirs to the everlasting life and joy of the kingdom of heaven. We have borrowed from this rich tradition of Christian symbolism and woven it into a theme for our Year Book. We have taken only a few of the many symbolic representations of Christ Our Lord-Christ the Victim, Christ the Light of the World, Christ the Peacegiver, Christ the Teacher. And for Our Cover we have chosen a very beautiful statue of Christ by a Contemporary Sculptor of Modern Art the Austrian Artist Karl Hagen auer It is our conviction that the strong but simple lmes of this statue best sum up the strength and peace the life and hope that is Christ Our Lord To Him then who IS the Eternal Logos jesus Christ Son of God Our Savior we dedicate this book as a symbol of the total dedication of our own lives May He who is the Beginning and the End the Alpha and the Omega always be for us the be all and end all of our existence that as we have begun our lives through Him and with Him And in Him we may so conclude them at the evening of life U n n , . , 9 I 3 7 ' ' J . 9 Q I 1 a 5 n lr 3 ! It is of great antiquity. Lambs were victims of sacrifice in the Old Testament and the prophets foresaw Christ, the Redeemer of the world, as the Lamb slain for the sins of all mankind. In the fullness of time, Saint john the Baptist proclaimed the coming of the long-awaited Mcssiahg Be- hold the Lamb ry' God, who takes away the sin of the world ! Cjohn 7,29l. The Church commemorates this in every Mass, when before the communion she prays: Lamb of God, who taketh away the sins of the world have mercy on us. 'l'he lamp has always been used to symbolize Christ as the light ol the world, the source of all true wisdom and knowledge. In Latin, the letters were happily translated as jesus Hominum Salvatorwhwjesus, Saviour of Mankind? This became widespread in the twelfth century, when Saint Bernard promoted devotion to the Holy Name. It became the emblem of the Society of Jesus, when Saint Ignatius Loyola adopted it as the seal of his institute. EPILUBUE The Book has been written, the story of our ,four years at Canisius has been told. We can think of no better way of concluding' than with the words of one who knew the Divine Master so much better than we, the great Soldier-Saint, founder of the Society of jesus, and father of our beloved Jesuit Teachers to whom we owe so much, Saint Ignatius Loyola: ' PHHUEH FUR GEHEHUSIIU Dearest Lord, teach me to be generous. Teach me to serve Thee as thou Deservcstg To give and not to count the costg To iight and not to heed the woundsg To toil and not to seek for restg To labor and to ask for no reward Save that of knowing That I do Thy Will, O God. Pray for us St. Ignatius that in the years that lie ahead we may come to know Him more intimately, love Him more ardently and follow Him more closely. AMEN.
