The second is fo consider how fhis king speaks fo all his subiecfs, saying: My will is fo reduce fo subjecfion all fhe land of fhe infidels: wherefore, whoever desires fo come wifh me musf be confenfed wifh fhe food fhaf I ea+, wifh 'lhe drink and fhe clofhing fhaf I have, efc. ln like manner he musf labor as l do during fhe day, and wafch during fhe nighf, in order 'rhaf afferwards he may have parf wifh me in vicfory, as he has had in fhe hard work. The fhird is +o consider whaf good subiecfs oughf fo answer fo a king so liberal and so kind: and consequenfly, if anyone did noi' welcome fhe requesf of such a king, how he would deserve fo be blamed by all fhe world, and held as a slofhful knighf. The second parf 'of fhis Exercise consisfs in applying fhe above example of fhe 'remporal king fo Chrisf, our Lord. And asregards +he firsf poinf, if we consider fhe femporal king's summons fo his subiecfs, how much more worfhy of considerafion is if fo see Chrisf our Lord, 'rhe Efernal King and before Him fhe whole world, all of whom and each in parficular He calls and says: My will is fo conquer fhe whole world, and all my enemies, and fhus fo enfer info fhe glory of My Fafher. Whoever, fherefore, de- sires fo come wifh Me mus'l' labor wifh Me, in order fhaf following Me in pain, he may likewise follow Me in glory . The second poinf is fo consider fhaf all who have fhe use of iudgmenf and reason will offer 'lheir whole selves for labor. The fhird poinf is fhaf fhose who wish fo show greafer affecfion, and fo signalize fhemselves in every kind of service of fheir Efernal King and Universal Lord, noi' only will offer fheir whole persons fo labor, buf also by acfing againsf fheir own sensualify, and fheir carnal and worldly love, will make offers of greafer worfh and momenf . . . The Spirifual Exercises of Sf. lgndfius Chrisf, Our King, lived His earfhly life as a model for us fo follow in our own lives as sfudenfs. Chrisf, fhe King, challenges us foday fo imifafe His inspiring example and 'ro share His glorious work wifh Him. He promises us an efernal reward in glor , if, as courageous men of honor who are worfhy fo be His co-workers, we accepf fhe summons fo serve as crusaders in fhe ranks of our King. The pages of fhe l95b Arena are a record of fhe response of Canisius men, I955-I956, fo fhaf call of Chrisf, fhe King. 1 1046 F P Vol. 41 No. 4 Ent:-rc-il as sc-r-unrl-class malls-r August 31. 1932. at the Post Office nl Biiihln. Af communion breakfasf fables fhroughouf our counfry many words of fribufe have been spoken concerning fhe deep-roofed sancfify of Sf. lgnafius, and fhe far reaching successes of his spirifual sons. Jesuif schools from Buffalo fo Baghdad have feafured displays concerning fhe several works of fhe Sociefy of Jesus. The Philippine missionary, fhe Welfare lsland chaplain, fhe Universify of Beiruf professor, fhe Sf. Louis Preparafory School feacher, fhe work of fhese men has been described, all as a fribufe fo fhe holy founder of fhe Sociefy fhaf labors af fhese fasks. As sfudenfs af a Jesuif high school, parf of fhe vasf Jesuif educafional sysfem fhaf spans fhe world, we nafurally join in fhis salufe fo fhe founder of fhe Sociefy of Jesus, and, in a special way, we exfend our congrafulafions fo fhose Jesuifs whom we know besf of all, our feachers here af Canisius. Buf fhis is more fhan a fime of congrafulafion, if is a fime of inspirafion. Joined wifh our admirafion of fhe many works of fhe Sociefy of Jesus is a spirf of emulafion. Our Jesuif feachers have accomplished much in fhe kingdom of Chrisf and fhey have sef a paffern for us fo follow. lf is a paffern of acfive labor in fhe service of Chrisf, acfion di- recfed and sancfified along fhe pafh poinfed ouf by Sainf lgnafius for fhe greafer glory of God. Acfion was indeed fhe aim of lgnafius. The numerous works menfioned above, works inaugurafed by Sf. lgnafius and carried on by fhe Sociefy fo fhis day, fruly affesf fo fhis facf. Buf all fhese works, all fhis acfivify, is merely an effecf. The reason for fhis acfivify, fhe mofiviafing force behind fhis hard labor, we find foo in fhe life of lgnafius. For he was more fhan a man of acfion, he was a man of vision. Whaf fhis vision and inspirafion was we realize from our slighf familiarify wifh fhe Spirifual Exercises. The medifafion on fhe Kingdom of Chrisf when Chrisf is porfrayed as calling us all fo His service was 'fhe vision fhaf musf have driven lgnafius fo labor so lovingly and devofedly in fhe ranks of Chrisf, fhe King. Undoubfedly if was fhis same medifafion proposed by lgnafius, fhaf senf Francis Xavier fo spend himself on fhe heafhen coasfs of lndia and China. And as lgnafius proposed fhis ideal fo Francis Xavier, he proposes fhaf same fhoughf fo us each year in our refreaf. Each year, for fhe pasf four years, lgnafius has porfrayed fhis call of Chrisf, fhe King, fo us: and our refreaf masfers, men of lgnafius, have explained fo us whaf is necessary fo answer fhis challenge during our school days here af Canisius. Since fhe pages of our yearbook recall in some fashion fhe manner in which we have answered fhis call of Chrisf, if is mosf fiffing fhaf we reverenfly dedicafe fhis book as a fribufe fo fhe man who formulafed fhe challenge mosf vividly and who answered if mosf fully, Sf. lgnafius Loyola. 5 5 9? ni 1 Wa 5 i W Z N mi 42 . 2 uf ,Eg if F me gwf, . , A Q nw' 5 E a S , Q a if w gi 5 3- ,x , .1 ,U 1 F f 5 .,, .. BARNES 1931 CANISIUS 1956 For twenty-five years, johnny Barnes has been associated with Canisius High School as a physical training instructor, and coach of football, basketball, and baseball. During this span the athletic fortunes of Canisius have reached unparalleled heights as our numerous championship trophies attest. Yet through the years, in victory and defeat, in the blistering sun and the driving rain, on Washington Street and on Delaware Avenue, this smiling gentleman from Louisiana has built for himself and for Canisius a monument beside which all our trophies and medals pale into insignificance. For Johnny's perfect blend of unfathomable knowledge, strict discipline, sincere understanding, competitive spirit, and keen sense of humor has produced a whole generation of Canisius men who constantly reflect credit on their Alma Mater and on their beloved coach. Congratulations on your Silver Anniversary, Johnny, and may we have the privilege and pleasure of your masterful guidance for many years to come. Mr. C. V.
