Y., May 8th, 1915 5 Cents a Copy BY WAY OF PREFACE Today we launch forth to explore the sea of journalism. The sky may seem a little cloudy: the season may appear inopportune for such a venture: breakers may be ahead HOW IT CAME ABOUT The thought of publishing a High School paper was first suggested to us by the ex- ample of certain enterprising students of another Jesuit School, which, not to wound but ' our mention. sturdy C In the Europe of 1555, a young man called Peter Canisius was putting 1 Origi- drawing the finishing touches on a book important to those religiously-strained he pur- renlainil times, a catechism. Centuries later, in 1915, American students in a school it class. a Studel bearing his name tried to match his giant steps across 1iterature's thresh- L f old. The result was The Arena. To every student of Canisius We extend an invi- tation to co-operate with us in this enter- prise. The paper is yours, and to make it a success should be your aim and ambition. He suggested that February 21 be a holiday. The mat- ter was referred to Father Kirsch who neatly countered with the annual appeal that the students' cars be re- moved from the black top. Three victories in football and the month passed into history. October: The daily rosary began. This month of Our Lady proved satisfactory for the sons of Canisius. After the underclassmen retreat given by Fr. Thomas Burke, SJ., the activities began to pick up steam and get roll- ing. Our football juggernaut was demolishing the oppo- sition. On a truly unforgettable evening, October 15th, a sprinkling of hurricane-soaked fans saw them score a muddy victory over Timon at Civic Stadium. Our back- field appeared in bathing suits at the beginning of the second half and they were the only comfortable people in the place as they ran rings around the water-logged Timon defenders. ..- vw L.-T. -A f -free-'fame W l u ,h About this time the parents began to enter in the activities. At the end of the month, the Father and Son Communion breakfast was held with about one thousand young and old Canisius men attending the mass at St. Michael's and the breakfast at the Statler. A week earlier on October 22nd an Old Timers' Night was held for the St. Joe's game. Complete with gay nine- ties' costumes and a 1913 Stanley Steamer contributed for the occasion by a local auto dealer, the students of Canisius, 'Nardin Academy, Mt. St. Mary's and Holy Angels staged a fine half time show. The football team missed the spectacle as they listened to half time words of wisdom that finally won the game for us by a slender six points. This was the month of the closed retreat. For four days the Seniors stayed at Derby. Fr. McCarthy and Fr. Connolly provided the spiritual direction during those days, days that the seniors will remember as long as they remember Canisius. November: Dancing classes were in full swing now and the more proficient had an opportunity to display their new found talents at a rally dance for the football team. I THE CALL OF THE WILD a tearing apartb of a scene from Julius Caesar at the Variety Show. One week later our more serious minded thespians brought off a commendable perform- ance of The Merchant of Venice . Mosey excelled as young Gobbo, Paa as Shylock. Kirchgraber, incidentally took time off from the rehearsal schedule to attend the student council and again to suggest that February 21st be a holiday. Fr. Kirsch again countered with a sug- gestion that student parking on the black top be dis- continued. On the Thanksgiving week-end the foot- ball team celebrated their league championship with a dance. A few hopeful aspirants for the basketball team kept shooting foul shots during the intermission, but otherwise it was a highly successful affair. Quintarelli created a mild stir to close the month by setting off a junior size atom bomb of the third floor. Repercussions followed for weeks. December: The mite boxes began their daily tour of the classrooms shepherded around by a few suspects from the Brink's robbery. Despite this fact receipts kept mounting and augured well for the Christmas baskets. College Career night came and the seniors found that more than interscholastic chess competition was required Q 1 to get them into college. A marked improvement in studies was noted until the Christmas fever settled over the student body about December 9th, The holi- days approached quickly interrupted by one basketball victory and one defeat. Finally December 22nd dawned. The Christmas assembly passed off quickly, the Christ- mas baskets were filled, and for the first long stretch since September the jug room was empty. january: Here we go again. No sooner were we back in class than the examinations were upon us. From the 14th till the 24th the old blue-books were toiled over by student and faculty alike. The mid-term holiday was the calm before the storm. Father and Son night was held that evening and featured foul shooting contests and other entertainment. Report cards were distributed two days later. Several found that they had earned black and blue seals and the inquiries about conditions began. The school took time off at this period to bid farewell to Mr, Graziano, SJ., who was assigned to the japa- nese mission. February: Back to normalcy. The student Council fol- lowed up their resolution declaring February 21st a holiday by proposing a student court that was to end all injusticesi ???D. The court was to review all punish- ments assigned by student proctors and it was to be the court of final appeals. A lively discussion about the practicality of the court, fomented by the Citadel, kept the corridors buzzing. One constructive endeavor of the Council at this period was the highly successful Valentine Dance. The novel commercials plugging the YEARBOOK DEADLINE gg- 'SEE-3.. Incidentally February Zlst came a week later: school as usual. A purge of the Student Council followed as everyone cried for the scalp of Georgi Kirchgraber. March: The Acrions fell two points short of an un- defeated season in Memorial Auditorium losing the last game of the season to the Police Athletic League All Stars. The Varsity basketball team went their pogo stick way, up and down. They failed to bounce high enough in the final games and did not reach the play-offs. Of course a triple overtime loss to Fallon by two points was not figured to brighten their spirits or to help the ulcers of the coach. At this point the Passion Play cast took over the auditorium, sandwiching in their rehearsals between the final intramural games. After 4D won the basketball championship, the faculty unearthed a pre- historic game called volleyball which caught on fast. Since the faculty were the only ones who knew the rules they managed to win a few early games, but by mid-April most of their stars went on the voluntarily retired list. March 17th was celebrated in true Hibernian fashion with a Mass in Old Sloyinian. Quiet then de- scended for a few days till the Passion Play began in earnest. Short periods, crowds in the foyer, and a fine production on stage, marked the run of the play. joe Girdlestone, Mosey, Nalbach and others gave very credit- able and inspirational performances. Then one fine Saturday the prospective freshman class arrived for the entrance exam. The seniors, strengthened by the sight, began to take stock before graduation. Coach Barnes started drills for the baseball team, but he forgot to inform the weather bureau and Lake Erie of our plans, so cold damp weather continued. May: The madcap month. The auditorium re-echoed with the prize debate and the Oratorical contest. The sports dinner was held in the homey confines of the cafeteria Cwithout those ever present proctorsb and it was well attended. Kleinhans rocked to polkas and the bunny hop in late May when the Senior Prom hit the scene. Class picnics began in earnest and the owners of the Canadiana, cheered by the prospect, shovelled the last few inches of snow from the upper deck and were ready for business. The days remaining on the school calendar were whittled down to zero. june: What is so rare as that day in june, the final class day. Ah, but wait, there is that slight matter of the province examinations. One by one they are con- quered and finally the end is here. The underclassmen bow out of the picture gracefully, but only after intro- ducing a resolution that February 21st be a holiday next year, and the seniors have the school to them- selves. june 19th, the afternoon is hot, but that little diploma and the four years associated with it, make up for everything. Farewell to the class of '55. --R...-.-f... .....,..- BY THE SKIN OF THEIR TEETH I ,-A C u K 1 O I L. ll 61 i A Final Historical Note on I' IICI ln the year 1915, the Arena, a fortnightly publication, was started at Canisius High School. It boasts of being the first and only publication the High School ever had. Some years later it became a quarterly with a Thanks- giving, Christmas, and Easter number, the final issue being the Yearbook. The explanation for the title, the Arena, is that the editors would be proud to see the sons of Canisius hold an honorable place in the athletic world, but prouder still to see her sons crowned in the literary arena. These hopes and aspirations of the first editors have been met on numerous occasions, for ever since the maga- zine has been strictly a literary magazine, hardly a year has gone by in which some scholastic award was not given to the school for its literary work. Some of the awards have been local, many others have been national. Its crown is piled high with laurel wreaths. The History of Canisius High School Nicholas H.
