In Confirmation we be- came spiritually eligible for training as active knights or soldiers of Christ. Here at Canisius we received that training in all its phases- spiritualg scholasticf athletic-so that we could serve Him better in adult lye. Canisius has been for us the arena in which we cru- saders have exercised ourselves and made ourselves strong in souL mind and body. Since our training during these years has been ded- icated to the service of Our Lord it is fitting that the account of these years recorded here in the pages of the Arena should likewise be dedicated to Christ, the King. To our dedication we also join a consecration and a pledge to serve Him as faithful Catholics in the arena of life. X r-- - X . . X, . .. You and your dad receive together at St. Michaels, take a brisk walk to the Statler and the smoke filled comradeship of the breakfast room. A verb-form contest for all the Freshman classes serves to improve your grasp on the elusive forms of laudo, mitto and so on. You sit low in your chair hoping that your name will not he called. Somehow or other, though, the judges manage to single you out to let others profit by your mistakes. Well anyway, you did not want the holiday that went to the winners. It would have meant work- ing twice as hard the next day. 25 February: Well you survived the first term exams so you finally begin to feel at home and you sense that you belong at Canisius. Along with that feeling goes a greater appreciation for the teachers with whom you have been working since September. The educators of the times realized that intellectual and physical development alone would not produce the perfect Christian knight. It was for this reason that a hoy's training for knighthood was a thoroughly religious process. And the actions of these Catholic knights reflected the training they had received as youths. Here at Canisius too our education is designed to train us for future lye as modern day knights . Sodalities lead us Per Mariam Ad Jesum. eil' P1 A typical work of the Frosh Sodality. 34 2 ilirvahman Svnhatlitg The Sodality of Our Lady is a religious group which aims at fostering in its members an ardent devotion, reverence, and lilial love toward the Blessed Virgin Mary. Its primary purpose is to make its members good Catholics, sincerely bent on sanctifying themselves. It also seeks to train its members as zealous apostles who will help their neighbors to save and sanctify themselves. In order to have sodalists prepared to achieve this twofold aim, a rigorous period of training and probation is prescribed. During the first year the sodalists must become acquainted with the rules of the sodality and with the spiritual exercises of mental prayers demanded by the Sodality. Toward the close of First year, or at the beginning of second year, once the period of instruction and probation is ended, the probationists are solemnly admitted as full-fledged sodalists. ,y,nl I 'fszgg .gf igix g E 2251 'E?2?P:i' 1595541 ' S555 ' mf' gg: I -mr. Because of his devout realization of the values of the sacrifice of the mass, St. john has been desig- nated as the patron of all altar boys. It is fitting that our group of mass servers here be named in his honor. This society provides mass servers for the Wfednesday Duces mass and for the weekly K.B.S. mass. The more stout-hearted early risers also come every day to serve the masses of the Jesuit priests on the faculty. Fr. Sturtzer, SJ., undertakes the training and supervision of this society. i 'uf X, A Ai ' i ' P lf. -e , 1 ' 1 4 ' A F K u 1 .4 5 ' . , ,W , l gl 'T' '. Q .M w'-. ix l 4 t . Each class is represented at these meetings by its class president, and the more important school activities also have personal representatives. This year the Council was instrumental in effecting a student proctor system in the cafeteria' that has proved very helpful. A constitutional crisis arose early in the year and a committee was appointed to revise the whole constitution and bring it up to date. Perhaps the most lasting work of the Council will be the publication of the C book which will be a pamphlet describing all the activities of the school.
