Tribute vi l l what MR. THOMAS J. JONES, A.B. Ni V E, the Senior Class of 1951, take this opportunity to thank and congratulate Mr. Jones on his 25th anni- versary as a member of the faculty at Canisius, We thank him for the help, both spiritual and intellectual, he has given us, promise to remember him in our prayers, and extend the sincere wish that he have 25 more years at Canisius. 6 Facult VERY REVERFND JAMES R. BARNH'l l', 8.1. President, Canisius High School QVE wish to extend to Fr. Barnett and the other members of the faculty our heartfelt gratitude. They have made our four years at Canisius what they are: a happy memory of the past and a firm preparation for the future. They have taken us, uninitiated in the ways of life, and slowly moulded us into the form of what we proudly Call ourselves, Canisius Men. We feel that we have had the best of the Fathers, Seholastics, and lay teachers. And we are grateful for the start they gave us, one we feel couldn't have been made better anywhere else. 7 Rev . Zn ililzmnriam ALBERT HADAWAY It is with deepest regret that we, the class of '51 look back upon the untimely death of Al Hadaway. The sorrow is lightened somewhat when we realize that God called Al from our midst to be happy with Him for eternity almost as a reward for the near-perfect life he led while on earth. As a member of the Sodality and the Duces club Al was as faithful as one could be. Although rather reserved he was known to his class-mates as a sincere, hard-working and light- hearted friend. The Faculty and the under-classmen join us in the hope that he will hear our prayers, humble as they might be, and help us to win the coveted goal which he already has received. 42 R Q ' tiwssif 7 '5N.1'gQng .- . A 1 The Wabash Cannonball Rak racks up 72 I W' ACTIVITIES SOD LITY In the hearts and souls of every loyal Son of Canisius there is a special place reserved for Mary, the Mother of Our Divine Saviour. This spot is Filled with the ardent desire to live accord- ing to the motto and purpose of The Sodality. Ad Jesum per Mariamn clearly reveals the role the Sodality plays in the spiritual life here at Canisius. The purpose of the Sodality is primarily, personal sanctihcation and secondly, sanctification of others. With this as the goal it is easy to understand why the So- dality holds an undisputed su- premacy over all other activities. This year as always the sodal- ists made great sacrifices to bring joy and happiness to the less fortunate in the Buffalo Diocese through the mite boxes. SENIOR-JUNIOR SODALITY OFFICERS . . . Walters' scores included 83 and 65 yd. runs. Captain Jack Naples hooked a Johnny Labinski pass in glory land and Charlie Crowe scampered 72 yds. to complete the scoring. CANISIUS o TIMON I2 Crossing the Timon Io-yd. line 6 times and controlling the ball most of the game, the Crusaders simply ran out of gas. Al- though sparked by the inspired running of Bucky Walters and the pass receiving of Jerry Brennen the team couldn't push the ball over the goal line and thus suf- fered their only loss of the season at Lackawanna Stadium. This was to be somewhat Left Tackle Left Guard Fullback Frank Gustina Larry Felser jerry Strozewski 100 . Tn FOOTBALL of a grudge game, as the Rapideers had never been beaten by Canisius on the gridiron. This was remedied quickly. Jerry Strozewski bucked over for the initial score after being set up by Capt. Jack Naples' 65 yd. run with a screen pass. The Blue and Gold were never headed after this. Bucky Walters added to the Canisius total by hotlooting 85 yds. to pay dirt in the third quarter. Charlie Crowe made the score an even zo by sweeping end for 68 yards. CANISIUS 9.6 ST. FRANCIS 6 VVith a piece of the Notre Dame Cup at stake, the Canisius eleven played like the real champions they were by clubbing a good St. Francis squad into submission 26-6. John Labinski sneaked over with the first score and after that it was Katey, bar the door. Labinski uncorked two sparkling spirals with a wet ball, for touchdowns to Crowe and Lascola. Crowe wrote 3o to a fine season by squirming off tackle on a gor- geous trap play. Ca . In the opening meet Canisius met Bennett and after defeating them went on to beat Kenmore, South Park, Technical, North Tonawanda and Riverside. Highlighting the N.T. victory was Regan's win over Markovich, holder of the 220 yard freestyle rec- ord in this area. Last year's Soph sensation Dan Guz swimming the 50- yard freestyle also chalked up impressive victories during the course of the campaign. Our gratitude now is heart-felt in- deed, but our real appreciation will be realized when, in years to come we pass over these pages seeking to relive the carefree days this publication will recall. When we remember the long days of study, the success of our ath- letes and the companionships these have offered us, then we will be truly grateful. But, nevertheless, we wish at this time to express our inadequate thanks to all who have given every effort to make this Arena a success: to the staff who put many long hours and much enthusiasm into this Yearbook, to Fr. Bauer, S.-I., for his advice and counsel, to our generous patrons and advertisers, to Mr. Don Messinger and Bob Furer of Keller Inc., to Mr. Curry of Curry's Camera Campus, who took more than 500 pictures for us and also to all those at Canisius whose names are not directly linked with this publication, but whose cooperation was so essential to its completion.
